Chapter 944 It's good that you're back

"Sister-in-law, what is this?"

After a brief pause, he slowly turned around to look.

Little Grey's tail swished lightly on the ground. Its wolf eyes were narrowed, but its attention was clearly still on the cub. When it saw Jian Dan turn around, it picked up the little white wolf cub from its body and tossed it to Jian Dan's feet with practiced ease.

Then, after glancing at Jian Dan and ignoring her and the people around her, he snatched a humanoid creature from the gray wolf behind him and threw it in front of him without any hesitation. After that, the two wolves turned around and left together.

They left.

This startled the patrol team in front of them, who all took a step back, paused for two seconds, and then stepped forward to investigate.

"Sister-in-law, what's going on? Who is this person?"

He simply waved his hand, bent down, picked up the little white wolf cub, and held it in his arms.

"Don't ask me, I don't know either. I picked them up halfway, but when the child met me, he kept calling me 'uncle.' See if you can find any identification information, or if he's wearing a military uniform. Otherwise, the little guy shouldn't be calling me 'uncle' for no reason."

The group exchanged glances and quickly and efficiently divided the tasks: some carried the child and led Jian Dan down the mountain, while others lifted the unidentified person and cleaned up the scene. Then, they gave the order to call it a day.

Aside from the regular patrol shifts, the rest of the people came up here to look for the cubs. Now that they've seen them, they can naturally leave.

Down the mountain, the elderly couple, who hadn't slept all night, tossed and turned for a long time after arriving home. They had only managed to doze off for a short while when they heard someone knocking urgently on the door. Startled awake, they exchanged a glance, put on their clothes, and got out of bed.

"Old commander, she's back! Her wife is back! She's already coming down the mountain."

The old man perked up.

"They're back? The children are back too?"

The messenger was just a messenger and didn't know much.

"They should all be back; the higher-ups have already called back the troops."

He glanced outside; the sky was already beginning to lighten. He wasn't sleepy to begin with, and now he couldn't fall asleep at all. So the old man simply put on a pair of...

"You stay home and cook some food, I'll go pick it up from over there."

"Okay, I'll cook the meal. When I get back, I'll let them eat and sleep."

After the old man finished speaking, he strode out the door, and the old lady also got busy, directing Qin Jing, who had been awakened, to help out.

The rice had just been put into the pot when Qin Qinghuai strode in, startling the old lady.

"Third brother, what brings you back?"

"mom,"

Qin Qinghuai's voice was hoarse, and his face was covered in stubble; it was obvious he hadn't slept all night.

"Mom, have you found the child? I just went inside, but no one was home."

The old lady sighed and quickly poured her son a glass of water.

"Don't worry, we just got the news. They said they found it and are coming down the mountain now."

Qin Qinghuai emptied his teacup in one gulp and started to walk out. It was obvious what he was going to do, but the old lady quickly stopped him.

“Son, don’t worry. Your wife went up the mountain yesterday after receiving the news and hasn’t come back yet. It’s been more than a night. She may have gone through a lot of danger. You mustn’t say anything to her.”

She knew her son very well. Putting aside everything else, she doted on him terribly, giving him everything he wanted. He was usually very good-tempered, but if he really got angry, you never knew what he might say.

"Besides, this matter isn't the daughter-in-law's fault, you understand?"

Qin Qinghuai paused, and after a long while, he sighed helplessly.

"Mom, in your heart, am I such a unreasonable person? Don't I know whether my wife is good or not?"

"The kids are getting older, and I know I can't keep an eye on them anymore. My wife is strict, but she's not heartless. Do you think I don't know that?"

"Ah, haha, it's good that you know, it's good that you know. I was just afraid that when you get anxious, you won't hold back your words. Even if you're angry, you can't just say things like that, because it will hurt our feelings."

Qin Qinghuai sighed again, turned around and hugged his worried old mother.

"Don't worry, your son isn't that unreasonable. He chose his own wife. If he doesn't cherish her, won't he make others cherish her? Besides, the one who's most anxious about this is my wife."

I'm not home, and she's the one who's supporting the family all by herself. They say it's just the two of them, but the responsibility is still quite heavy. I haven't done much for the family to begin with, so what right do I have to criticize her?

If we're going to pinpoint the responsibility, I bear more of it. I failed to fulfill my duties as a father. I've been so busy these past few days, barely been home, and left the child and the family on her shoulders. That's my problem.

The old lady was very pleased and nodded repeatedly.

"It's good that you know. My daughter-in-law has had a tough time. When I heard the news yesterday, I was terrified. I was panicking. It was all thanks to my daughter-in-law's composure that she found some clues and made the decisive decision to go up the mountain herself. Otherwise, these people might still be lingering around the family compound and the camp."

Speaking of yesterday's events, Qin Qinghuai readily returned to the topic, took a cold dry meal from the stove, and ate it with water while asking the old lady for details. After listening, and having almost finished the meal, he thought for a moment...

"Mom, so you're saying that the child actually left kindergarten on their own initiative?"

He received a call and rushed back, but he really didn't know the specifics.

The old lady sat down and added some firewood to the stove.

“I didn’t go to the scene to take a closer look. My daughter-in-law left in a hurry and didn’t say much. She just said it might not have been done by human hands.”
