Chapter 4 Gift: "I'll kill you if you don't wear it."
Yue Mingxi paused in her steps toward the cottage, turning her head curiously. "Wu Shanqing, someone is knocking on the door."
Wu Shanqing used an incantation to release the barrier, saying, "Go open it if you're looking for someone else."
"Looking for me?" Yue Mingxi pointed to herself, looking shocked. "But I don't know her."
She just transmigrated yesterday and has only known Wu Shanqing so far.
Wu Shanqing took a bite of the fish, savored it for a while, then swallowed it along with the bones, saying calmly, "I don't recognize it either."
"..." Yue Mingxi choked for a moment, then lowered her voice and said, "We don't even know each other, why should we open the door for her?"
"Whatever," Wu Shanqing said indifferently, then took another bite of fish and swallowed it, bones and all.
Yue Mingxi twitched the corner of her mouth. "Is this fish that delicious?"
The woman outside waited a moment, then hesitantly knocked again, her voice tinged with doubt, "Excuse me, is anyone home?"
Curious, Yue Mingxi turned back and walked to Wu Shanqing's side, her big eyes blinking as she looked at him.
"Wu Shanqing, I'll go open the door in a bit. If we encounter any danger, will you protect me?"
"No," Wu Shanqing said calmly, without any hesitation.
Yue Mingxi snorted, "I don't care, you ate my fish, so you have to protect me."
"I mean there will be no danger."
"Huh? Is that so? Hahahaha." Yue Mingxi was a little embarrassed and laughed awkwardly a few times.
To avoid making the woman wait impatiently, Yue Mingxi ran quickly to the hut, took off her canvas shoes, put on ill-fitting green embroidered shoes, and then ran quickly to the door.
"Coming, coming, almost here."
With a creak, the wooden door opened, and Yue Mingxi greeted them warmly.
The woman outside the door, dressed in white, with an oval face and dark almond-shaped eyes, appeared to be in her early twenties. She greeted him with a smile, "Fellow Daoist."
"Hello to you too," Yue Mingxi smiled, looking at the beautiful stranger. She blinked and asked in confusion, "Are you really here to see me? But I don't know you."
The woman nodded. "Yes, I am Chen Wanbai from the Xuanyun Sect."
The woman raised an eyebrow and said, "It's alright, we'll get to know each other soon."
"Wow, your name is so nice," Yue Mingxi said happily, mimicking her address, "I am Yue Mingxi."
Chen Wanbai smiled and said, "Your name is also very nice."
Yue Mingxi chuckled twice and beckoned to her, "Sister Bai, come in and talk to me."
Chen Wanbai paused, her eyes widening. "May I come in?"
“Of course.” Yue Mingxi smiled. Although she had only known Wu Shanqing for a morning, she believed she had already figured him out.
Wu Shanqing was a lazy person; he was too lazy to care about her or even speak to her.
Aside from not letting her go out, Wu Shanqing let her do whatever she wanted in other aspects.
Leading Chen Wanbai in, Yue Mingxi turned her head and asked, "Sister Bai, what do you want with me?"
Chen Wanbai smiled and said gently, "I'll take you out."
"Huh?" Yue Mingxi's eyes widened, her expression turning dejected. "But Wu Shanqing won't let me go out."
The girl had a beautiful face, with large, bright, and clear eyes that seemed to reveal all her thoughts, like uncarved, natural gemstones. She had a small red mole on each earlobe, giving her a lively and spirited look.
"You can go out now."
Wu Shanqing's indifferent voice suddenly rang out, interrupting Chen Wanbai's words.
Chen Wanbai's expression turned solemn, and he knelt on one knee, clasping his hands in a gesture of respect.
"I am Chen Wanbai from Xuanyun Sect. I have come here on my master's orders to greet Lord Wu."
Upon first meeting the legendary Lord Wu, Chen Wanbai felt a surge of nervousness and fear.
Subconsciously, she was told that this Lord Wu was dangerous.
From the moment she stepped into the small courtyard, she felt an overwhelming sense of oppression.
Yue Mingxi stared in shock at the scene, glancing between Wu Shanqing, who was sitting on a small wooden chair eating fish, and Chen Wanbai, who had a serious expression on her face.
This scene is too fantastical.
For the first time, Yue Mingxi had a real sense of having transmigrated into the world of cultivation.
"Why are you late?" Wu Shanqing's voice was icy, without the slightest inflection.
Chen Wanbai knelt on the ground, not daring to move.
The intimidation pressed down on her relentlessly, causing cold sweat to bead on Chen Wanbai's forehead and a metallic taste of blood to rise in her throat.
Despite the pain, Chen Wanbai forced herself to explain.
"As soon as Master received Lord Wu's instructions, he sent me here. It was my foolishness that made me search for the way for so long."
“Interesting,” Wu Shanqing chuckled, “It took two extra hours to find the way.”
"It is because this disciple has failed to complete the task. Please punish me, sir."
Because of the pain, large beads of sweat dripped from Chen Wanbai's forehead.
"Then let's do it according to your sect's rules."
"Yes," Chen Wanbai replied solemnly.
Frowning at Wu Shanqing, Yue Mingxi scratched her head in confusion.
Wu Shanqing was so lazy and indifferent just now, how come he has become so calculating now?
Seeing Chen Wanbai's pained expression, Yue Mingxi pursed her lips and couldn't help but whisper, "Wu Shanqing, this isn't right."
However, it was too late. Once Yue Mingxi was about to speak, not even ten oxen could stop her.
"Getting lost is human nature, why are you punishing Sister Bai?" Yue Mingxi asked, puzzled.
"She's late," Wu Shanqing said casually.
"What will happen if we're late?" Yue Mingxi couldn't help but ask him.
If something particularly dangerous were to happen, Yue Mingxi could understand.
The key point is that no danger occurred.
Yue Mingxi couldn't understand why Wu Shanqing was angry.
Wu Shanqing glanced at Yue Mingxi through his veiled eyes, but said nothing.
Yue Mingxi's legs trembled under his gaze, and she forced herself to whisper, "Since nothing happened, could you please not punish Sister Bai?"
To be honest, Yue Mingxi was scared, but once the arrow was released, there was no turning back.
Now that things have come to this, she has no choice but to bite the bullet and push forward.
"You're so noisy." Wu Shanqing frowned.
"If you don't punish Sister Bai, I won't make a fuss." Yue Mingxi looked up at him.
"Oh," Wu Shanqing said indifferently.
She lowered her head and ate the fish in small bites, ignoring Wu Shanqing.
Yue Mingxi was stunned for a moment, then her eyes widened suddenly, and she said happily, "Wu Shanqing, you agreed? You agreed, didn't you?"
"Wu Shanqing, you're so kind, so kind." Repeating these words, Yue Mingxi jumped up and helped Chen Wanbai up.
"Thank you, Lord Wu, thank you, Miss Yue." Chen Wanbai staggered to her feet.
Looking down at the girl who was smiling brightly, Chen Wanbai secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
If this girl gets hurt because of her, she will be in a terrible position.
"You're welcome, Sister Bai, are you alright?" Yue Mingxi asked worriedly.
"It's nothing." Chen Wanbai smiled at the girl, then looked at Wu Shanqing sitting on the wooden chair and clasped his hands in thanks, "Thank you for your mercy, sir."
Although the oppressive aura she had just experienced made her uncomfortable, she knew that the man had not intended to harm her; he was merely warning her.
Chen Wanbai pursed his lips and said, "This matter is entirely my fault. I will heed your teachings and will never allow such a thing to happen again."
Wu Shanqing didn't speak. Yue Mingxi tugged at Chen Wanbai's sleeve and said happily, "Since Sister Bai is alright, let's go out."
She still clearly remembers that Wu Shanqing agreed to let her go out.
I'd better get out of here now, what if he changes his mind later?
She had just recklessly argued with Wu Shanqing, and she was genuinely afraid that Wu Shanqing would set up a barrier again to prevent her from leaving the house.
"Okay, okay." Chen Wanbai looked at Yue Mingxi with a doting expression.
"Sister Bai, wait for me, I'll be right there."
She rushed to the kitchen, grabbed five gold ingots from her bundle, and ran to Chen Wanbai's side. "Sister Yue, let's go."
Letting the girl pull him along, Chen Wanbai solemnly said, "Please rest assured, Lord Wu, I will definitely protect Miss Yue well."
Yue Mingxi waved to Wu Shanqing, "Wu Shanqing, I'm going out to play. Take good care of yourself at home. I'll bring you delicious food and fun things when I come back."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Wu Shanqing appeared in front of her in an instant.
As if facing a formidable enemy, Yue Mingxi shouted loudly, "You said I could go out, and you can't go back on your word."
"Give me your hand." Wu Shanqing coldly interrupted her.
"Okay." Yue Mingxi, not understanding why, obediently stretched out her hand.
The next second, a tooth-shaped pendant appeared in her palm, cool to the touch, strung on a black cord.
Yue Mingxi looked at the pendant, and after holding back for a while, she couldn't help but say, "It's so ugly."
Instead, Chen Wanbai recognized the teeth on the pendant and was surprised.
"Shut up, put it on." Wu Shanqing threatened, looking down. "If you don't wear it, I'll kill you."
"Alright." Yue Mingxi smiled and put the pendant around her neck. "For your sake, I'll reluctantly wear it."
Yue Mingxi was overjoyed as she tucked the pendant into her clothes.
Although the gift was ugly, like a wild boar tusk that Wu Shanqing had picked up in the mountains, she was still very happy.
Looking up at Wu Shanqing intently, Yue Mingxi smiled and said, "Thank you for the gift. I'll bring you one when I come back."
“It’s not a gift,” Wu Shanqing said expressionlessly.
“I say so.” Yue Mingxi laughed, tugging at Chen Wanbai’s sleeve. “Wu Shanqing, I’m leaving, you don’t need to see me off.”
“I didn’t intend to give you anything,” Wu Shanqing corrected her coldly.
“I say so.” Yue Mingxi chuckled. “Alright, this time I’m really leaving. Goodbye, Wu Shanqing. I might be back late. It’s almost noon. You can just have that grilled fish for lunch. When I come back, I’ll bring you lots of delicious food.”
"Shut up." Wu Shanqing frowned. "You'd better leave now."
"Okay, hehehe." Yue Mingxi replied happily.
With a creak, the courtyard gate closed, and Yue Mingxi's chattering voice and footsteps faded into the distance.
Until you can't hear it anymore.
Wu Shanqing turned around and sighed softly.
The thing I picked up is not only a mentally challenged person who can't understand what I'm saying, but also a heartless person who tries to be friendly.
