Children tend to sleep a lot. After playing for a while, Lin Ying fed her some water and took her to the toilet. Soon after, Er Ya fell asleep in Lin Ying's arms again.
However, this time she was a light sleeper and would wake up as soon as she was put down. Lin Ying was worried that she would disturb Shuanzi, so she simply held her in her arms.
With nothing to do, Lin Ying sat there in a daze.
Looking at Er Ya in her arms, she still finds it somewhat unbelievable.
From a young age, Lin Ying had also fantasized about her future life.
She imagined herself becoming like her maternal grandfather's aunts, the wife of a wealthy man, attending parties every day, and spending her afternoons drinking tea and playing mahjong. She also imagined living like her former neighbors, in a scholarly family, devoted to her husband and raising her children.
She even considered never getting married and just working as a doctor at the Lin family clinic.
She had once been attracted to Zhao Qinghuai, but never imagined that the two of them would one day be together. She also never imagined that she would become so down-to-earth, dressed in coarse cloth, sitting on a train holding a child—it all seems somewhat unbelievable.
It is said that life is long and things are unpredictable.
But compared to the countless possibilities she had imagined before, only now does her heart feel truly full.
The train arrived in Beijing around 6 PM. Their train was scheduled for 11 PM. Zhao Qinghuai pushed the luggage and let Shuanzi sit on it. Lin Ying held Er Ya in her arms.
After resting at the guesthouse, we had dinner at a state-run restaurant.
Fortunately, they were able to travel to Harbin in a soft sleeper train again.
Zhao Qinghuai used to be in the military in Beijing, so he naturally has some connections there.
Fortunately, it wasn't peak season, and Zhao Qinghuai was lucky enough to buy four soft sleeper tickets in a row, which was just enough to book a whole room.
When they boarded the train, Shuanzi and Erya were already asleep. Lin Ying took some hot water to wash the children's faces and then used a towel to wipe their feet before taking off their outer clothes and covering them with blankets to sleep.
As for Lin Ying, she could only go to the washroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. She wanted to take a shower in the space, but the changes were too drastic and Zhao Qinghuai would definitely notice. So she could only endure it.
Worried that Er Ya might wake up at night, or even fall out of bed, Lin Ying would hold Er Ya while she slept. If Er Ya moved even slightly, Lin Ying would get up and take her to the toilet.
Strangely enough, Lin Ying was initially worried that this constant sleeping together might affect her sleep. However, every time Lin Ying brought Er Ya back from the bathroom, they would cuddle and fall asleep immediately. It didn't seem to have any effect on their sleep at all.
Zhao Qinghuai, on the other hand, didn't sleep very well because he was worried about his safety on the road and also about Lin Ying being affected.
The journey from Beijing to Harbin took a total of sixteen hours. Despite Lin Ying's best efforts, Er Ya still wet her pants.
Lin Ying was well-prepared and changed her pants. Then she went to the bathroom and washed the pants.
However, her pants weren't dry when she got off the bus, so Lin Ying had to hang them on her backpack. Seeing Zhao Qinghuai carrying a backpack with his pants hanging down, Lin Ying couldn't help but laugh.
Seeing Lin Ying's expression, Zhao Qinghuai couldn't help but feel helpless: "Wasn't this what you wanted to do? Why are you smiling so happily?"
Lin Ying finally stopped smiling: "I just didn't expect it to be so funny."
Zhao Qinghuai sighed: "If you laugh again, you'll have to carry this basket."
"Fourth Uncle, let me carry it."
"Hahaha. See? Shuanzi is worried about me, he won't make me carry him. Isn't that right, Shuanzi?"
Shuanzi didn't understand either, but seeing Lin Ying smiling happily, he smiled along, nodding slightly as he smiled and said, "Mm!"
Lin Ying smiled even more happily.
To save time, they took a bus from Harbin to Beidahuang.
There were more buses available, and they boarded the buses directly after getting off the train.
By the time they arrived in town by bus, it was already dark.
As soon as he got off the bus, he saw a man in military uniform run over and salute Zhao Qinghuai: "Regimental Commander!"
Zhao Qinghuai saluted before saying, "You're not wearing a military uniform, so don't be so formal. Come and help me with my luggage."
"yes!"
Seeing that the person was still reserved, Zhao Qinghuai couldn't help but explain to Lin Ying with some helplessness, "They are my soldiers."
Lin Ying nodded. She really hadn't realized that the person Zhao Qinghuai had chosen must be a top soldier in other units as well.
It would be better if there was a car to pick me up.
Before midnight, Lin Ying and her family finally returned home.
It's still September, but the weather is already a bit chilly. With little tidying up of the house, Lin Ying could only take out two blankets she'd bought from her suitcase to cover the child.
Early the next morning, Lin Ying gave the belt she had made to Zhao Qinghuai.
Lin Ying had always wanted to make things smaller so they would be easier to carry. However, she had also asked around and learned that soldiers were not allowed to wear jewelry, so Zhao Qinghuai couldn't wear a chain around her neck like she did.
You definitely shouldn't be carrying a crossbody bag.
Therefore, what she gave him had to be something Zhao Qinghuai could put inside his clothes.
Wood or metal are always somewhat unsafe, so she made this belt for her.
The belt was made of roe deer hide. Inside, it was divided into small compartments, each bearing Lin Yingxiu's handwriting. Each compartment contained different items: anti-inflammatory medicine, life-saving pills, wound medicine, and a compartment with money and tickets.
Lin Ying wrapped each one in kraft paper. And it was sealed, the kind that could only be opened in a critical moment.
Fortunately, the belt is quite soft, and it's connected in the middle with an elastic band. Wearing it is fine.
So Zhao Qinghuai tied the belt around his waist, changed into his military uniform, and left.
