Following Lin Ying into the room, Deng Li discovered that this was the kitchen. There was a water vat near the entrance. Further ahead was a washstand. Then, like everyone else, there was a cutting board. Further inside were two large stoves with pots and pans.
There's a door opposite the stove.
Deng Li knew the layout of the room; she had been there before.
However, when Deng Li followed Lin Ying in, she realized that every home was different.
Unlike their house, where the floor was made of earth, Lin Ying's house had wooden planks on the floor.
Actually, Lin Ying's living room used stone slabs before. But last year, when they built a kang (heated brick bed) in the room, they removed the wooden planks inside. It just so happened that stone slabs could be used on the kang, so they replaced it directly.
While wooden floors are a bit more troublesome to clean, they are much more friendly to children who like to crawl on the floor.
Seeing that the floor was spotless, Deng Li felt embarrassed to step on it: "Do I need slippers?"
Lin Ying quickly said, "No need, no need, just come in. There's no need for so many formalities."
Deng Li entered the room and looked at the wooden sofa, guessing that it was probably made by the owner. She thought to herself, "There's really no way to compare people like that."
Lin Ying gestured for Deng Li to sit down, poured her a glass of water, and added some sugar: "It's not good to drink tea tonight, so you'll have to make do with this."
Deng Li quickly replied, "No, no. I came here today because I have something I'd like to discuss with you."
Lin Ying saw the two children playing with building blocks. Or rather, one was playing, and the other was making a mess. So she didn't pay any attention to them. Instead, she said:
“I know why you’re here, sister-in-law. Just tell me. We’ve known each other for a while now, and I know what kind of person you are. I will definitely support your work.”
Deng Li's anxiety finally subsided, and her smile became even more genuine: "With your words, I'm relieved. I just took over the job today, and there are still many things I haven't gotten the hang of. Now, with this hot potato, someone has to do it. Since you've said so, I won't beat around the bush."
I also find that system particularly unreasonable. You might say that going up the mountain to cut timber or going to the back mountain is nothing unusual. Some people might not know this, but my husband knows you won't be in danger on the back mountain. However, it is indeed somewhat unsafe for anyone else to go to the back mountain besides you.
So I was thinking, if we change the system like this, we won't ban timber and such. Things will remain the same as before. Who can just buy furniture if they need it?
However, children are prohibited from going up the back mountain without adult supervision.
As for the hunting, it's not that I'm deliberately making things difficult for the girl. You can go to any military family compound or ask around. Any large game that's caught is collectively distributed. Before, there were no managers here, so naturally no one said anything. But now that there's management, if things were like before, and the higher-ups asked, I'd be in a difficult position.
However, this only applies to large game. If it's something like a pheasant or rabbit, then nobody will care. There are no outsiders here, so I'm just telling you this: if you really hunt a large game, be careful to avoid people. Everyone needs to eat meat sometimes, right?
Lin Ying understood Deng Li's meaning: she wouldn't interfere with her cutting down trees in the back mountain, but any large game she hunted would still need to be handed over. Actually, if those people didn't constantly cause her trouble, and the neighbors lived in harmony, without any rules or regulations, she wouldn't lack meat because of the tiger family.
Just like today, it's not a big deal if each family gets a bowl of meat.
But she's not stupid; she'd be feeding them meat while simultaneously causing them trouble, wouldn't she?
"Then, sister-in-law, if I can't go hunting in the mountains, and people bring me meat again, I have no reason to share it, right?"
Deng Li's lips twitched, and she instantly understood. Lin Ying could have simply gone hunting and had someone else deliver the item to her. Even though it had changed hands, it was still a gift, and they couldn't claim it was collective property or anything like that.
"That definitely doesn't count. If it was a gift from someone else, then it must be yours."
Lin Ying nodded: "Okay, that's enough with your words, sister-in-law. Don't worry, I will definitely support your work."
Deng Li smiled with satisfaction. Although she knew Lin Ying might try to take advantage of the situation, as long as she didn't go against the grain, in her husband's words, the military wouldn't abandon Lin Ying because of some people.
She was aware of the risks involved. She was a smart woman and knew what to do.
"Alright, with you saying that, I know what to do. It's getting late, and I have a lot to do tomorrow. I won't keep you any longer."
