The reason that Commander Shan said those things was because of the antidote pills that Lin Ying gave to Anba.
One purpose of giving Anba the antidote pills was, of course, not wanting to take Anba's things for free; the other was to remind Commander Shan of her value.
When she saved Gao Chunhua last time, someone saw her feed Gao Chunhua a pill. But afterwards, the matter was dropped. Lin Ying roughly guessed that Zhao Qinghuai had suppressed the matter. However, as their direct superiors, Liu Jinfeng and Shan Yubang couldn't possibly be unaware of it.
Now, Lin Ying has taken out antidote pills. These things might be useless to others, but for those who constantly face numerous dangers, they are absolutely the best guarantee for their lives.
Ordinary people don't know what Zhao Qinghuai's team does, and even his family members probably don't know either. If Lin Ying didn't know Zhao Qinghuai very well, she probably wouldn't know either.
Lin Ying had no idea how much financial and material resources it would take to build such a team, but she knew it would definitely be no small amount.
Even putting that aside, in any era, if given the chance, no one wants to go against a doctor, especially a skilled one.
Lin Ying made Shan Yubang see her value. That's why Shan Yubang said he would protect her.
And so, the farce caused by jealousy came to an end.
Lin Ying also knew that although Deng Li had become the women's director, she wouldn't always side with her. Those military wives, despite having made mistakes due to instigation, still needed to live in the family compound, so they had to be properly appeased.
That evening, Deng Li came to Lin Ying's house, wanting to find out about Lin Ying's background. This was probably an idea that Zhang Shanlin had given her.
This was Deng Li's first visit to Lin Ying's home since the last time she helped build a house for Lin Ying's family.
It's no wonder those people were jealous. Lin Ying was indeed a thrifty person. If they hadn't witnessed firsthand how the house collapsed and how much effort Lin Ying had put into rebuilding it, they probably would have been jealous too.
Upon entering, on the left is a large pile of firewood bundles, now covered by somewhat worn straw mats. This is preparation for winter. On the right are some slides and similar items. Her daughter once told me that Lin Ying specially made these for the children to play with.
It seems that Lin Ying did these things to keep the younger children from going out to play because the children of the newly arrived military wives had bullied them.
Walking along the cobblestone path, Deng Li saw piles of timber on her left. She knew these were also from the forest farm, because Li Juan had previously told people not to go up the mountain to cut firewood.
To the right is the kitchen. Unlike other hastily built thatched huts, this house has a stone base and thick wooden pillars on top. The straw curtains hanging above the kitchen are now lowered, not only to keep it clean but also to provide some protection.
If you walk further ahead, you'll reach Lin Ying's house.
At this moment, Lin Ying came out from outside after hearing Deng Li calling for someone.
Looking at the thatched shed that Lin Ying's family had built, Deng Li couldn't help but say, "This thing looks really nice. Did you just use planks underneath?"
Lin Ying said, "Yes, last year we were in a rush and didn't do it properly, so many straw mats were unusable after only one year. This year we came up with this solution. We simply placed the straw mats between two wooden boards. This way, we can bury a section of them in the ground, and the straw mats won't swell up when the snow melts."
Deng Li looked at it for a long time, then looked at the structure inside, and finally could only shake her head: "I don't want to. This is delicate work, and no one in the family knows how to do it. It looks like we can only use straw mats to surround it like last year."
Lin Ying smiled and said, "That's fine too, at least it saves trouble. It's getting a bit chilly outside, why don't you come inside and sit for a while? The two kids are at home, the little girl is a bit clingy to us tonight."
Deng Li nodded: "Okay, then I'll go sit for a while."
After the shed was erected, Lin Ying sealed the main gate again. The door to the room Lin Ying had made of wooden planks on the left was opened. Inside, the original entrance to the gate was now covered by straw mats.
Seeing Deng Li's curiosity, Lin Ying opened the small door over there: "In winter, we don't go in from this side; we always go in through the back door. This side is just sitting empty anyway, so I planted some vegetables here."
As Lin Ying opened the door, Deng Li shone her flashlight and could see the inside of the shed clearly.
It hasn't frozen yet, and the temperature inside the shed is quite warm. A layer of lush green vegetables has already grown in the wooden crates.
"I reckon it'll get cold here when the weather gets even colder. We might move to the back then, where there's a stove."
As she spoke, Deng Li followed Lin Ying home.
Standing at the gate of Guanshan vegetable shed, Deng Li looked at the cement-paved ground. Deng Li knew about this; Lin Ying's house had been flooded because of water flowing down from the mountain, and possibly well water nearby.
At that time, the military unit that Lin Ying applied to sent some cement. That's what it was used for.
Now it seems that using cement to harden the ground makes a difference; it's really clean inside.
Moreover, the location is spacious enough, and now that it's covered by a canopy, it's perfect for placing anything. It's a pity that Lin Ying's family didn't put anything there.
Walking further in, we reached the back door of Lin Ying's house. Unexpectedly, there was another door here, resembling a vegetable shed.
Only by opening the door can you see what's behind it. There's a well right by the entrance. Further behind are Lin Ying's woodworking tools.
"Sister-in-law, this is the door, please come in."
Deng Li was so focused on looking behind her that she didn't notice that there was a single window on the right side of the doorway that looked like a vegetable shed. There was a door right in front of the window.
