Chapter 53 Going Up the Mountain

When Lin Ying woke up the next day, she found herself lying in bed, with Zhao Qinghuai there as well.

"You didn't go to the army?"

"It's still early, we'll have to wait a while."

Lin Ying said "Oh," then suddenly realized, "Didn't we sleep in the back room yesterday?"

Zhao Qinghuai couldn't help but laugh when he heard this: "You're one to talk. It was too hot over there. Last night you were like a roasted sweet potato, rolling around in my arms. If I didn't bring you here, I wouldn't be able to sleep."

Lin Ying suddenly realized: "It is indeed a bit hot over there."

Zhao Qinghuai suddenly remembered something and asked, "Wife, you seem to have lost weight. You felt lighter than before when I hugged you yesterday."

Lin Ying was taken aback, then pretended nothing had happened, acting as if she was still half asleep: "Hmm, you've lost weight? Could it be because you've been eating only two meals a day lately and are starving?"

Zhao Qinghuai didn't understand either: "I guess so. Then you shouldn't just eat two meals a day, but three. Don't starve yourself."

Lin Ying nodded: "We'll talk about it later."

Zhao Qinghuai patted Lin Ying's hair: "Then you sleep a little longer, I'm going to the army."

After Zhao Qinghuai finished speaking, Lin Ying got up as well: "Never mind, if you sleep any longer you won't be able to sleep tonight. Shall I make you some breakfast?"

Zhao Qinghuai checked the time: "I can't keep up. I'll go to the cafeteria for lunch. I'll also check on those kids' recovery."

Lin Ying nodded, indicating that he should do as he pleased.

The kitchen has a thermos and a water tank. Lin Ying also installed a sink there for convenience, where she brushes her teeth, washes her face, and washes vegetables.

Lin Ying folded the blankets and came out, while Zhao Qinghuai had already come out of the bathroom to wash up.

When Lin Ying came out of the restroom, Zhao Qinghuai had already washed up and gotten dressed.

"Wife, I'm leaving."

"Be careful on the road. I've heard there have been wolves on this road lately."

Zhao Qinghuai laughed: "Don't worry, even a wild wolf would run away when it sees me."

Zhao Qinghuai was not joking; his position as regimental commander at such a young age was definitely not undeserved.

Lin Ying also knew that Zhao Qinghuai was very capable; it wasn't like she had just met him.

After Zhao Qinghuai left, Lin Ying washed up and put away the things she had bought yesterday. She has a big appetite and always cooks a lot.

After finishing her meal and cleaning up, Lin Ying changed her clothes and got busy in the shed.

Soon, she made herself a pair of snowshoes. After trying them on and finding that she wouldn't sink into snowdrifts, she went home and put on her outdoor clothes.

Wearing thick boots, padded trousers, and a padded coat, wrapped up tightly in layers, he set off with his basket on his back.

That's right, Lin Ying planned to go up the mountain. She had collected enough fruit before, and since she planted the fruit trees in her space, she couldn't uproot them like other plants.

The small courtyard has plenty of sunlight, making it perfect for drying herbs, wheat, and rice. It would be a shame to plant fruit trees there, as their shade would cover the space.

Anyway, there are fruit trees in the mountains, especially in the back mountains, and basically no one comes here except her. Of course, if possible, she would also like to study the space well water properly.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Lin Ying put on her homemade snowshoes from her basket. It hadn't snowed for the past two days, and the snow was covered with a thick layer of ice.

Fortunately, Lin Ying nailed a row of nails to the bottom of the shoes she made and also made wooden gears, which can prevent slipping and also prevent the shoes from sinking into snow pits.

Lin Ying, wearing thick gloves, picked up her paddles and walked forward.

After trying it a couple of times and confirming that there were no problems, Lin Ying slowly entered the mountain.

Lin Ying could see signs of someone having been there from the outside. Judging from the mess around her, someone must have been gathering firewood. It seemed that not everyone had prepared all the firewood before winter like she had.

No one came any further in, but the tracks on the snow were very clear, showing many traces of various animals crawling around.

Speaking of which, isn't the Great Northern Wilderness known as a place where you can "beat roe deer with a stick and scoop fish with a ladle"? She's been here for so long, and it seems she's never seen a roe deer except for wild rabbits and pheasants.

It's said that roe deer meat is delicious. According to Mo Zi's memory, in about ten years the government will regulate these things, prohibiting hunting and chopping wood. She felt she should try it while she still could.

But before that, she needs to study the uses of well water.

Following her memory, Lin Ying found the tree where she had picked pears before. Looking around, she saw only a few pears remaining at the top of the tree.

She thought for a moment, then used a small shovel to clear the snow around the tree, and then poured a bucket of well water from her spatial storage onto the base of the tree.

Normally, she would just water the well water when planting vegetables and herbs, and that would be enough. Since this was outside the space, Lin Ying wasn't sure if the well water would be useful.

As well water was poured into the tree roots, in the blink of an eye, the pear tree began to sprout wildly. Lin Ying watched as the green leaves turned yellow and withered, and then fell off. This happened more than ten times.

The tree trunk, which was originally only as thick as a calf, has grown into a large tree with a diameter of at least ten centimeters.

Just when Lin Ying was wondering if this would only make the tree grow but not bear fruit, the tree suddenly bloomed with white flowers.

Lin Ying waited there, looking at the pear tree covered in white blossoms. Suddenly a gust of wind blew by, and some of the white blossoms began to fall, while others began to bear fruit.

Until the entire branch was covered with fruit, and the leaves turned yellow again.

Lin Ying picked a pear and took a bite, and was surprised to find that the pear was much sweeter than before.

She picked some and put them in her basket, and then started picking the rest and putting them into her storage space.

It wasn't until later, after reading books on pear cultivation, that Lin Ying realized her pear tree experiment had been quite fortunate. Pear trees are generally classified into self-incompatible and self-compatible types. Self-incompatible pear trees require pollination with other types of pear trees because their flowers have a certain degree of resistance to self-pollination; only cross-pollination can stimulate better fruit development. However, some pear trees are self-compatible; they can complete pollination and fruit production on the same tree. The flowers of these pear trees can transfer pollen and produce fruit on the same tree.

The pear tree she chose happened to be self-compatible, which allowed her to have pears to eat. Otherwise, she would only know a lot about medicinal herbs, and perhaps a little more about things like corn and wheat. Because they were crops, her grandfather had casually taught her about them.

So, it was purely by sheer luck.

Just as Lin Ying was excitedly picking pears, she suddenly heard a heavy sound getting closer and closer to her.
