Chapter 158: Escape from Song Territory

After finally escaping the peasant woman, the three men were left in a state of disgrace. The current emperor, Zhao Huan of the Song Dynasty, had been chased and beaten by a shrew with a broom for stealing a chicken. If word got out, the imperial family's reputation would be completely shattered.

Nangong Lian'er looked at Zhao Huan, who was disheveled, and took off the broom leaves from his head. Zhao Huan swept the floor with a stern face, and Nangong Lian'er could no longer hold back and laughed with her hands covering her mouth.

"Cao Dongsheng, if anyone knows what happened today, I will kill your entire clan."

Cao Dongsheng looked at Nangong Lian'er, who was giggling beside him: "What if Miss Nangong spreads it?"

Zhao Huan and Cao Dongsheng said in unison: "We will kill all nine generations of your clan!"

Nangong Lian'er held her stomach and laughed so hard that she bent over. Zhao Huan kicked Cao Dongsheng on the butt.

Cao Dongsheng fell to the ground and said, "Your Majesty is wise and sage, even better than Yao and Shun."

Arriving in the capital, the three immediately returned to their original selves: a stern and solemn emperor, a gentle and innocent girl, and a loyal eunuch.

As soon as he arrived at Wende Hall, the eunuch in charge handed him a letter: "Your Majesty, urgent news from Yue's army!"

Zhao Huan opened the letter and was overjoyed. "Come here, notify the Privy Council and issue an edict! Have Yue Fei send someone to bring Nianmur here as quickly as possible."

Numur fled for his life, knowing what would happen if he was caught.

As a general of the Jin Dynasty's Western Route Army, Nianmur was accustomed to the intrigues in the officialdom and was well versed in the Jin Dynasty's system. He knew how to successfully avoid pursuit and even knew how to escape to the Song Dynasty.

If he ran straight along the official road, he would be caught up by the pursuers in less than three days.

The only way out now was to take the post roads. The post stations all had horses, and as long as he was fast enough, changing horses at each stop without changing people, he could easily escape to Song territory. Once in Song territory, the sky would be the limit. With the intelligence he had on the Jin Dynasty, he would definitely be able to enjoy a comfortable life in Song.

Jinzhou Post Station, a Jin Dynasty post station modeled after the Song Dynasty. While it was much smaller and more crowded than the Song Dynasty post stations, the horses there were nonetheless top-notch.

When Nianmur arrived at Jinzhou Post Station, the horse under his crotch was already shaky.

Finally reaching the entrance of the post station, Nianmur reined in his horse, which could no longer support itself, fell to its knees and foamed at the mouth.

A warrior's closest companion on the battlefield is his warhorse. This horse had accompanied Nianmur on his campaigns, conquering the Liao and attacking the Song, practically inseparable. Now, dead from exhaustion on this very post road, Nianmur was heartbroken.

The postman at Jinzhou Post Station ran out in a hurry and was surprised to see a man in general's uniform stroking the fallen warhorse.

Nianmur raised his head, his eyes cold and frightening. The postman shrank back in fear.

"Saddle up the horses for me, and bring me the best horses from your post station."

The postman hesitated: "Who is the general?"

"I am Nianmur, the vanguard of the Western Route Army. The Mongols have invaded our Great Jin and are approaching the capital. This general, under the order of His Majesty, is dispatching troops to the southern Song-Jin frontier!"

The postal envoy was shocked when he heard this. The Mongols actually dared to invade and were about to reach the capital. How could he not be shocked?

"General, do you have the post station token?" asked the postman.

Nian Muer took out a token from his pocket and shook his head: "In a hurry, I have to use my own token."

The commander-in-chief of the Western Route Army was much more powerful than a small gold medal from a post office. The postman dared not neglect it and hurriedly shouted: "Quick, bring the horse! Bring the fast horse over!"

The postman at the post station hurriedly brought a fast horse from the stable. Nianmur jumped on the horse and clasped his fists to the postman: "I will report this to His Majesty and have you promoted!"

The postal envoy was overjoyed and hurriedly took out a gold medal from his pocket and sent it: "There are many post stations ahead, and the procedures are complicated. General Nian, with this token, you can travel freely on this post road."

Nianmur took the gold medal and said, "Thank you! Goodbye!" He clapped his whip, spurred his horse into a gallop, and disappeared in the blink of an eye.

The soldier next to him bowed and said, "Congratulations, sir. Congratulations, sir. Promotion and wealth are just around the corner."

The postal envoy was overjoyed and smiled at Nianmur Juechen's forehead.

Soon, a group of officers and soldiers came galloping behind him. These people were wearing the uniforms of the guards in front of the palace of the Great Jin Dynasty.

The palace commander saw a horse lying dead in front of the post station and immediately understood what was going on. He pointed at the postman with his whip and asked, "Did anyone pass by this post road just now?"

The postman smiled and said, "That's right. General Nianmur borrowed a fast horse from me and headed for the Song-Jin border."

The palace commander whipped him with a whip and asked, "Why are you letting us pass by borrowing horses without the post station's gold medal?"

The postal envoy was shocked and didn't understand what was happening. He covered his slapped cheek and said, "General Nianmur said that the Mongols had invaded and reached Shangjing. He was ordered by Your Majesty to mobilize troops to the Song-Jin border. Only then did I dare to let him go."

"General, there are several post stations ahead. The postmen there may not be willing to lend him a horse. If we chase him quickly, we should be able to catch up." A guard nearby said.

The palace commander pointed at the postal envoy and asked, "Without the gold medal, can Nianmur pass through those post stations?"

Although he didn't know what had happened, the postman knew he had gotten into trouble, so he said tremblingly: "I'm afraid of delaying military intelligence. Give him the Jinzhou Post Station gold medal."

The palace commander was furious. With a "clang!" he drew his sword and cut the courier's throat.

The soldiers nearby were shocked and retreated one after another, no one dared to move forward.

The commander sheathed his sword and pulled up the reins: "Chase!"
