After Kuroko Fan confirmed with Lie Fu through his eyes that the woman was indeed dead, he let out a soft breath and the usually talkative boy remained silent.
The four remained silent throughout the journey, except when they were discussing the route.
They didn't know how to explain everything that had happened to Cheng Shuang, especially Du Jun, who would subconsciously look away whenever the girl looked at him.
The Gate of Reincarnation is filled with all sorts of dangers, some from indigenous monsters and others from humanity itself.
But most of the time, humans are too busy running for their lives to have time to devise schemes and plots. Those who have some strength are either completely wicked.
Petty people are always in the minority, but powerful petty people make up the majority. So when you encounter such people and make enemies, the right thing to do is to nip the danger in the bud as soon as possible.
The little girl had a vague realization in her heart, but she didn't know how to break the silence.
Surprisingly, the temporary team was in a stalemate but also unexpectedly harmonious.
The teleportation array wasn't random; once the group thoroughly studied it, finding Cheng Shuang's starting point became extremely easy.
Picking up the little yellow hat, Cheng Shuang brushed off the sand and put it directly on her head. She smiled brightly at the three boys, made a gun shape with her fingers, and placed it on her chin to strike a pose. In a soft, childlike voice, she said, "I am the cutest kid in the Land of Reincarnation!"
Kuroko chuckled, breaking the tense atmosphere, and blurted out, "What about us?"
"You are my three great protectors!"
Lie Fu smiled and said softly to Du Jun, whose complexion had improved, "Little Cheng Shuang is still very sensible. I didn't misjudge her!"
Du Jun didn't speak, but looked at the little girl's reddened ear tips and deliberately puffed-out chest, and silently curled his lips.
The four of them, along with a giant bear that steadfastly guarded its master, stayed close to the castle, maintaining a two-minute time limit. They used the castle to teleport back and forth between the two locations, taking a short break to replenish their fluids.
Before officially setting off, Cheng Shuang brought up her guess about the wind. The other three relied entirely on their own strength, so they didn't go very far and couldn't verify whether the girl's reasoning was reasonable. They simply remembered it as a point of doubt and began to walk towards the center of the six-pointed star.
Although there are teleportation arrays, they still have to correct themselves if they accidentally deviate from the correct direction.
After about half an hour, the closer to the center, the fewer teleportation arrays there were, while the statues of beasts gradually became denser. The sounds of human screams and fighting, as well as the sounds of gunpowder and fire, could be faintly heard coming from all directions, deafening and making it impossible to discern the exact location.
The four exchanged a glance, their expressions grave.
There must be a big boss at the center of the maze, and there must be maintainers among the humans who possess the skills to use firearms.
"The more people there are at the Gate of Reincarnation, the more dangerous it becomes, because in addition to facing the original dangers, we also have to be wary of the unpredictability of people's hearts." Lie Fu smiled bitterly, wondering how many innocent cannon fodder would die in this chaos.
It's no use talking about this now; none of them will survive without passing through the maze's challenges.
"Let's go!" Du Jun took out a crossbow and arrows from his spatial storage. He had tried archery at the archery club once or twice. His accuracy was so-so, but his skills were too limited. He was probably willing but unable to deal with the big boss, so he still had to make two preparations.
Cheng Shuang, sitting behind Xiong Baobao, ran towards the source of the roar with a serious expression.
The yellow sand filled the sky, but only for a moment.
It felt like going from one world to another.
The wind howled, and sand grains were swept into the air like hailstones, scattering everywhere with a crackling sound, like tiny slaps on the skin.
As soon as she entered, Cheng Shuang reached out and hugged Xiong Baobao's neck. There was no way around it; the wind and sand were too strong, and her small body was too light to stand steadily.
The other three boys all lowered their center of gravity, each grabbing onto the next, to steady themselves.
In the eye of the storm, the ten-story-high statue was tall enough to blot out the sun. Its simple, line-drawn features were obscured by the sandstorm, and it seemed to be casually teasing the little ants at its feet.
People were fleeing in disarray everywhere. The swirling yellow sand became the biggest obstacle, making it impossible to see the enemy's direction and causing them to lose their own way.
Cheng Shuang didn't ask why she hadn't seen the giant statue earlier; she was sure that an invisible barrier had separated the two sides.
After all, it's a maze. Without reaching the true center, how can one possibly find a way out by glimpsing the presence of the big boss?
Of the more than one hundred people present, most were supporters and 'veterans,' with newcomers accounting for less than a third of the number present at the banquet hall.
The giant statue could turn around so easily that more than a dozen newcomers would be knocked to the ground. Forget about attacking or defending, they would even have difficulty moving.
What's terrifying isn't its power to send a bunch of enemies flying with a wave of its hand, but the fact that no matter what methods are used, it can't be killed.
The broken limbs were immediately patched up by sand; the desert's capacity for repair is as great as its size.
Like the most mischievous child, the giant statue kept poking at the tiny ants in its eyes with its fingers. Once it set its sights on someone, it would relentlessly twist them. Often, the newcomer it was targeting would not even be able to utter a cry for help before being twisted into a pool of bloody mud.
It is enormous, yet possesses the agility of quicksand; almost no one can escape its attacks.
At this point, the maintainers no longer retreat to the very end, because hiding their skills is pointless; once they die, it will be too late.
The one with the greatest fighting prowess was the white-haired youth.
He had a cigarette dangling from his lips and a fire starter slung over his shoulder. He moved nimbly, dodging the enormous statue, never confronting it head-on, and firing a shot whenever he felt a chill.
