Cheng Shuang's arms were grabbed by someone.
She looked over in confusion, only to realize that something was amiss.
"Turn...turn it off!" Chiri stammered, trying to reach out and unplug the VCR, but Yumi was faster; she jumped up and turned off the VCR.
However, the television screen was filled with static, and soon a woman appeared in front of a mirror combing her hair, and the scene from the videotape was repeated.
"It's...it's the legend of The Ring!" Qianli clenched her fists in frustration. "It's that Ring that's said to kill you within seven days if you watch it once!"
Cheng Shuang sighed, “How many legends are there?!” Last night’s Kayako, the Slit-Mouthed Woman on the way home from school, the midnight Ring videotape—she felt her ticket shouldn’t be called 'Symbiosis,' it should be called urban legend.
"So many!" Yumi's pupils dilated as she resisted looking at the images on the TV. "The third stall of the school toilet closest to us, Hanako, is said to have had many upperclassmen disappear in the past, so the toilet on the third floor was sealed off."
“I’ve heard of the Daruma in the bathtub! Never make friends in the bathtub.” Qianli immediately said something he had heard before.
"All he ever thinks about is the bathtub! What a lecherous guy!" Yumi scoffed, then raised her voice to deliberately create an atmosphere, "Teketeke is the sound of moving an elbow. Legend has it that a very beautiful woman fell off the platform and her body broke in two, and her vengeful spirit lingered after her death."
"The filth has a long tongue and sneaks into the bathroom while people are asleep to lick the grime. After it licks, the bathroom gets dirtier and dirtier." Qianli added, not to be outdone.
"Hmph, the bathroom again!" Yumi made a face, pondered the legends she knew, and quickly recited them.
Neither of the two children seemed to notice that their eyes had already been taken off the television, and the terrifying atmosphere created by the repetitive images was instantly shattered.
It must be said that sometimes being competitive is a good thing.
Cheng Shuang looked up at the two children, who were puffing out their chests like little chickens fighting, and telling terrifying legends one after another in the shortest language. Finally, she went over and turned off the TV, and the night light turned on with a snap.
"Movie's over, late-night snack's over, time for bed!"
A single sentence broke the silence between the two, who stared at each other in bewilderment. Suddenly, they both turned to Cheng Shuang, and Yumi pounced on her with a loud cry, "Yuko, beautiful and lovely Yuko, can I sleep with you tonight!"
Qianli curled her lips, looking as if she knew everything about him, and provocatively asked, "Are you scared?"
Yumi said the most cowardly thing in the loudest voice, "I'm scared, so what? I can sleep with Yuko, what about you?"
Refusing to admit defeat, Qianli picked up the little black cat that had been hiding on the sofa, "I'm sleeping with fried rice!"
"Legend has it that black cats attract evil spirits!" Yumi said with a mischievous smile.
Qianli froze, looking at the fried rice. The fried rice's dark eyes were also staring at him. For some reason, Qianli thought of yesterday, in that dilapidated and dirty bedroom, when the little black cat squatted in front of the wardrobe and turned to look at him...
At this point, Cheng Shuang couldn't let them sleep separately. It's a common trope in horror movies: once separated, they're doomed.
"We'll all be sleeping on the floor in the living room tonight!" Her words immediately relieved Qianli. He put down his fried rice as if a heavy burden had been lifted, and said eagerly, "I'll go make the beds!"
Almost as soon as he finished speaking, the phone rang abruptly.
The two of them jumped suddenly, genuinely startled, and their first reaction was to instinctively huddle behind Cheng Shuang.
The little girl looked at the two of them, a little annoyed. "Yumi, have you forgotten? Your mother said she would call at ten o'clock."
Yumi glanced at the wall clock subconsciously; it was exactly ten o'clock. She stuck out her tongue. "I...I'm scared. Why don't you answer it for me, Yuko?"
"No way!" Chisato immediately shouted in refusal, sternly criticizing Yumi, "You brought the videotape, why should Yuko take the danger for you! Are you deliberately trying to harm her?"
"I didn't!" Yumi panicked immediately. She hurriedly waved her hands and protested, "If I had such bad intentions, why would I watch it myself? Chisato, don't deliberately try to sow discord between me and Yuko!"
"I'm trying to sow discord?" Qianli sneered. "What if you've already seen it all and are already caught in the vortex of the curse?"
Yumi's face turned pale. She stammered, "No...no, this videotape...was...given to me by my sister! How could I have imagined it was Sadako's seven-day curse..."
Cheng Shuang and Qianli exchanged a glance. Something was wrong with Youmei's sister. What kind of older sister would do something so ruthless?
Chisato whispered, "Could it be Kawakami's second sister? So there really are sisters like that in the world!"
Cheng Shuang was taken aback. She looked at Qianli and asked again, "My second sister can do it too?"
Chisato nodded seriously, "Kawakami's second sister is very hostile to Yuko."
So it's not that Yuko is selfish in wanting to become an only child, but that her second sister has never given her the warmth of sisterhood.
As if struck by a sudden thought, Yumi collapsed onto the floor, covered her face, and sobbed softly amidst the piercing ring of the telephone.
Cheng Shuang quickly went over to comfort her, "Maybe your sister doesn't know the contents of the videotape, Yumi, don't overthink it. If there's a problem, it's better to clarify things. Now is your chance!"
Both of them looked at the phone at the same time.
Qianli gritted his teeth, got up, and answered the phone.
A crisp female voice came from inside, "Excuse me, is this the Kawakami family? I'm Yumi's older sister. Is Yumi home?"
"Yes!" Qianli quickly replied.
