Perhaps because the morgue was nearby, the temperature on the third basement level was extremely low, so low that even Cheng Shuang got goosebumps, but her body felt burning hot from exhaustion.
As if dragging a heavy object, each step was difficult for her, because all of Yumi's strength was pressing on her shoulders, making her wish she could shrink into a leg ornament.
Qianli was better off; he didn't add any extra burden to his friends and even thought about helping them share some of the pressure brought by Yumi.
Unfortunately, Yumi only trusted Cheng Shuang. Qianli tried to help her up several times, but she was always pushed away in a panic.
Cheng Shuang thought Yumi was quite a talent. She was trembling with fear, so much so that when Qianli encountered her, her heart skipped a beat, but she still managed to control herself and didn't make a sound. Her hasty 'counterattack' was also with her fists, to avoid making a sound.
He may not be very bold, but he's at least not completely clueless.
Having studied the hospital's fire escape map, Cheng Shuang found the stairwell of the emergency exit smoothly in the dark. She groped her way open the door, and with a snap, the light came on.
The sudden brightness was extremely stimulating to his eyes. Qianli covered his eyes with one hand while his other hand remained firmly hooked around Cheng Shuang's belt. Once his eyes had calmed down a bit, he looked up and immediately covered his mouth with the hand that had been covering his eyes, silencing his sharp scream.
Under the glaring lights, rows of corpses covered with white sheets lay on makeshift stretchers, opposite which were refrigerated morgues. Turning around, the door behind them was closed at some point.
Once she regained consciousness, Yumi cried silently, her face contorted in despair as she ran over to try and reopen the door.
The door was locked from the outside.
No matter how much she pounded on it or tried to turn the handle, it was no use.
Qianli's teeth chattered as he looked at Cheng Shuang, his voice barely audible, "Should we shout for help?"
Cheng Shuang pursed her lips, turned around and glanced at Yumi, who was crying with tears and snot everywhere. She didn't stop her from continuing to do useless work. Having something to do would at least prevent her from being idle and scaring herself with wild imaginations.
“Shouting won’t help.” She took out her phone, which showed a zero signal.
The morgue door was not an ordinary wooden door, but a thick steel door with no windows, so sound could not easily penetrate outside.
"Are you still sleepy?" the little girl asked Qianli, tilting her head.
Thousands of miles: ˊДˋ
"It's not hot anymore, is it?"
Qianli: (ノ‥)ノ
The boy was speechless. If it weren't so inappropriate, he would have liked to crack open his childhood sweetheart's head to see what it was made of. It's amazing that she still has the mood to tease him!
To his surprise, Cheng Shuang's two sentences significantly lessened his fear. He followed her closely to Yumi, who was gripping the doorknob and visibly agitated. "Yumi, what are you afraid of?"
Yumi's hands remained tightly gripping the handle. Her pale face was slightly raised, and her mouth seemed to open and close, but after a long while, no sound came out. It turned out that the child did not want to scream, but was too scared to speak.
Cheng Shuang patted her sweaty head and said, "The three of us are all fine. There's no injury, no bloodshed, and no death. What's there to be afraid of?"
Yumi paused, her frightened eyes flickering for a moment, and it seemed...it seemed...that made a lot of sense!
What is she afraid of?
"But...but aren't we going up the stairs?" she asked tremulously, hoping that Cheng Shuang would say something reassuring.
The faint light from the flashlight had illuminated the sign on the stairwell door, which clearly read "Emergency Exit," but why... why did it change location in an instant?
Cheng Shuang pondered for a moment, "Perhaps... the sign is wrong!"
What a perfunctory answer!
This sentence flashed through Chisato and Yumi's minds simultaneously.
However, it must be said that Cheng Shuang's overly calm expression gradually calmed Yumi down. She sniffled and wiped her face with a tissue, then blew her nose in a low voice, her tone filled with envy and admiration, "Yuko is always someone people can rely on."
Cheng Shuang didn't say anything. All her composure in the face of adversity was accumulated day by day. Back then, when she saw this scene, she probably wouldn't have had the strength to even run a few more steps. Yumi envied her, and how could she not envy Yumi?
The little girl composed herself slightly, her expression softening, and asked in return, "Are you coming with me, or are you waiting for me here?"
The two immediately tensed up, and Qianli asked anxiously, "Where are we going?"
Cheng Shuang's gaze swept over the rows of corpses. "Check them!"
Yumi looked over, and her legs went weak. She clung to the handrail to keep her balance, her expression once again filled with deep fear. "No, no, no, Yuko, calm down, it doesn't look good!"
The girl's lips twitched. A corpse was certainly not a good sight. "To leave, one must first find a way to leave."
Qianli swallowed hard, raised his hand to indicate that he had something to say, "Do you think there was an accident with the elevator we were in?" Seeing the two girls looking at him with confusion, he cleared his throat again, "I... I saw a similar scene in a movie. In reality... we were all injured and unconscious. This is our fantasy world. If we can't get out, then... we'll say goodbye to this world forever!"
Cheng Shuang wanted to applaud in particular; her friends' ideas were quite brilliant. To ease their psychological pressure, she nodded in agreement, saying, "That makes a lot of sense. If we try our best to find a way out, our lives will be protected!" After all, the unknown is more frightening, and with this explanation, she would be much more at ease.
"Weren't they captured by ghosts?" Yumi asked impatiently.
