Meanwhile, Su Yushan had asked Chang Yue to send a lavender pattern to the embroidery shop owner. The owner made two garments, which were very popular, and many wealthy young ladies placed orders. So the owner decided to make a few more and also sent a message to Chang Yue, asking her to draw some new patterns for future use. He also said that the price was not a problem and could be discussed.
At this moment, Su Yushan was admiring the flowers in the back garden, seeking inspiration amidst the vibrant colors and the fragrant breeze. Since the shopkeeper trusted her so much, she should certainly put her heart into creating designs, striving to bring him more profit, so that they could have a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership.
Just as she was about to put pen to paper, inspired by something, a servant came to report that the Fourth Master wanted to see her in his study.
Why couldn't they discuss this at Huatang Pavilion instead of in his study? When she asked the servant, he didn't know the details either. Su Yushan had a bad feeling and wondered if she had done anything wrong recently. She had no idea why Hongli had suddenly summoned her.
Chang Yue guessed that Fourth Master might be planning some kind of surprise for her, but her heart was inexplicably restless, and she always felt that something bad was going to happen.
Suppressing her inner unease, Su Yushan stopped painting and went to Hongli's study.
Upon entering the study, Su Yushan lifted her skirt and stepped over the threshold. Looking up, she saw Hongli sitting upright in a round-backed chair at his desk, his eyes half-closed. Seeing her, his face did not show the smile he used to; his expression was very serious.
Su Yushan became increasingly certain of her guess and carefully curtsied, "Fourth Master, what brings you here?"
In the short hour he waited for her to arrive, he had thought of countless ways to speak to her, but when he finally saw her, he hesitated to speak, only staring at her intently, his dark eyes filled with inquiry.
Su Yushan thought he had something important to say but didn't want to say it in front of Chang Yue, so she gestured for Chang Yue to step back. However, Hongli ordered her to stand still.
Pointing to the red cloth on the table, Hongli asked in a deep voice, "What is this?"
Chang Yue approached with a puzzled look, and unfolded the red silk. She saw that it contained medicinal herbs, which looked very familiar to her. Since she was always required to prepare medicine for her master whenever he arrived, Chang Yue respectfully replied:
"This is a fertility-enhancing medicine."
Su Yushan, who was standing to the side, caught sight of the medicinal herbs and her heart skipped a beat. She secretly thought that something was wrong!
Although Hongli was asking Changyue, his gaze was fixed on Su Yushan's face, wanting to see her reaction when she saw the medicine.
In that instant, her brows furrowed, as if she were pondering something. Seeing this, Hongli's brows furrowed even more, and he questioned Changyue again, "Where did this medicine come from? Which doctor prescribed it?"
"This..." Chang Yue really didn't know the origin of the medicine. It was given to her by Su Gege, and she never doubted anything. She just brewed the medicine according to the instructions. Now that the Fourth Master suddenly asked about it, she was at a loss and was afraid of saying something wrong. She looked at her master with difficulty.
Since Hongli asked, it proved that he was already suspicious. Lying wouldn't solve the problem, so Su Yushan had no choice but to answer truthfully.
"I got this medicine prescribed by a doctor myself."
"The doctor told you this is a fertility-enhancing medicine?" Hongli trembled as he asked this question, because he was unsure how Su Yushan would answer. What would he do if she continued to deceive him?
Meeting his furious gaze, Su Yushan knew this was a tricky matter. If she passed it on to a doctor, given Hongli's personality, he would definitely continue to press her about which doctor it was.
Fabricating stories was definitely not an option; he wouldn't give up until he found the doctor himself. One lie requires many more to cover it up, and Su Yushan dared not take the risk. In the end, she decided to confess everything.
"This is not a fertility-enhancing medicine, it's a contraceptive soup. I lied to Chang Yue, and she was unaware of it."
Upon hearing this, Chang Yue was greatly surprised. "What? This...this is a contraceptive soup?" No wonder her mistress had not been able to conceive; it turned out she had been giving Su Gege a contraceptive soup every day!
Chang Yue was innocent, and Su Yushan didn't want to implicate her, so she gestured for her to leave first.
Knowing that her two masters had something to say, Chang Yue didn't want to get in the way and left the room.
Now only the two of them were left in the room. Su Yushan was hesitating about how to explain, while Hongli glared at her with hatred, his anger still burning.
Before this, he had been thinking that perhaps the doctor had prescribed the wrong medicine, or perhaps Yu Shan was unaware of the situation, and that it was all just a misunderstanding. But now, hearing her admit it with his own ears, Hongli's only hope was shattered. Gripping the armrest tightly, he gritted his teeth and angrily rebuked her.
"Why should I drink contraceptive soup? Don't you owe me an explanation!"
Her views were probably incomprehensible to others, but since he had asked, she should give an answer. After hesitating for a moment, Su Yushan said, "I... I'm still young, and I don't plan to have children for the time being."
Do you know what a child means to a woman in the backyard?
She knew, of course, that "it meant favor and status, but that's what they wanted, not what I wanted."
Her nonchalant attitude was incredibly hurtful. "Others want children, but I haven't given them to them. I want to give you a child, but you're drinking contraceptive soup. Su Yushan, are you really that unwilling to have a child for me?"
Hongli was so indignant that his voice unconsciously rose, and his serious expression frightened Su Yushan, causing her to become somewhat afraid and speak in a lower voice.
"I just don't want to have children right now."
"Why wouldn't you want to? When you like someone, you naturally want to have a child together. If you don't want a child, it means you still don't like me?"
"It has nothing to do with feelings, I just think it's too early," Su Yushan had to make up an excuse to prevent him from pursuing the matter further.
"We've just gotten together, and our world as a couple is wonderful. But if I get pregnant, then we won't be able to be intimate anymore."
