Faced with Yunfang's questioning, Qinghe's usually aloof face showed a rare hint of embarrassment. After a moment, he said, "Mother said that Miss Yu is cold-sensitive and asked me to get her a hand warmer. There are only enough game to exchange for one. If you want more, I will hunt more game."
Yunfang winked and smiled, "No need, I was just joking! My hands are warm, I'm not afraid of the cold. You should save your prey to sell for money!"
Since she refused, Qinghe didn't stand on ceremony any longer and turned to go inside.
Su Yushan felt this was inappropriate, so she handed the incense burner to Yunfang, asking her to use it. Yunfang refused, saying, "I was just teasing him! Sister, don't take it seriously, I'm really not cold." She then placed her own hand on the back of Su Yushan's hand.
"Look, I'm still sweating!"
Comparing the two, Su Yushan realized that her hands were unusually cold, indicating that there was indeed something wrong with her health.
After putting the hand warmer back in the inner room, Su Yushan went to the kitchen to help wash the vegetables. She had little concept of the purchasing power of money, so she specifically asked Yunfang about the price of the bronze stove.
Yunfang pondered for a moment and said, "A bronze furnace is more expensive than an iron one, at least one tael of silver. One wild rabbit is definitely not enough. I guess he must have hunted a lot of wild rabbits, or hunted raccoons or foxes. The pelts of these animals are valuable, so the coppersmith would be willing to accept them."
There must be a reason why she suddenly inquired about these things. Thinking of a certain possibility, Yunfang reminded her in advance: "You must not give Qinghe any money. He is stubborn and will definitely not accept it."
“But I can’t just accept his things for nothing; I have to do something for him.”
After thinking for a while, Yunfang suggested, "Hmm...why don't you make him some clothes?"
This must be really difficult for her. Su Yushan smiled awkwardly, "I can only cook, I can't sew. I can't even embroider a belt properly, let alone large garments."
Speaking of belts, she suddenly remembered that she had embroidered a belt for Hongli, but she left before it was finished. She wondered if Changyue would give the belt to Hongli; knowing Hongli's personality, she guessed he would just throw it away.
As she was lost in thought, Yunfang's clear voice reached her ears, "Then just ignore him. He gave it to you without expecting anything in return. You often cook for him, and you don't ask for anything in return, do you? We're family after all, no need to be so particular."
Su Yushan couldn't think of a good solution, so she could only put the matter aside for the time being and deal with it later.
One day in mid-winter, the last yellow leaf on the withered branch was blown off by the wind. The weather was dry and cold. Yunfang was sleeping in when her mother dragged her out of bed. It was because a relative's son was getting married that day, and they had to go to deliver a congratulatory gift.
Their relatives live in the next village, which is quite far, so they have to get up early.
Liu had told Qinghe beforehand that Qinghe disliked crowds and did not want to go. Yu'er was unwell, so Liu did not dare to trouble her. Therefore, she cooked the dishes the night before and told them to reheat them at noon.
After giving her instructions, Liu wrapped a thick headscarf around her neck and went out with her daughter.
After breakfast, Qinghe went hunting in the mountains as usual, while Su Yushan stayed in the house alone, flipping through a copy of "Biographies of Exemplary Women" that Qinghe had borrowed for her from a neighbor.
It was almost noon, and guessing that Qinghe should be back soon, Su Yushan went to the kitchen to boil a pot of water.
As soon as she stepped outside, she discovered that snowflakes were falling—the first snow of the year.
She hadn't left her room all morning, unaware of when the snow had started falling; by now, the road was covered with a thin layer of snow.
She carefully made her way to the kitchen through the snow, but her foot slipped and she lost her balance, falling backward instantly. In the nick of time, she grabbed a tree nearby, but the tree was too small to support her, and she ended up sitting on the ground.
In that instant, Su Yushan was so frightened that she broke out in a cold sweat, completely forgetting the pain in her body. She clutched her abdomen tightly, fearing that something might happen to the baby.
Just then, Qinghe returned through the wind and snow. Upon entering, he saw Su Yushan lying on her back on the ground, seemingly in great pain.
He immediately dropped his prey and ran towards her, "Miss Yu! Are you alright? Where did you fall?"
He was about to help her up, but she felt a sharp pain in her spine and tailbone and dared not move. She quickly waved her hand at him, "Don't move yet, let me rest for a bit."
Seeing that she was having difficulty getting up, Qinghe was worried that she was too badly injured, so without saying a word, he picked her up and carried her horizontally.
This sudden action startled Su Yushan, who cried out, "Hey---put me down, I can walk by myself."
He ignored her and carried her straight into the inner room. When they reached the tent, he put her down.
Qinghe was about to fetch a doctor, but it was still snowing outside. Su Yushan didn't want to trouble him. "I just grabbed onto that tree, which cushioned my fall, so it wasn't too bad. Let me rest for a while and then we'll see how it goes!"
"You're in so much pain you can't even straighten your back, how could you be alright?" A fall shouldn't be taken lightly; it can be serious or minor. Qinghe still thought she should have a doctor examine her.
He insisted on going, and Su Yushan couldn't stop him, so she could only wait at home.
After the doctor arrived and took the baby's pulse, Su Yushan, fearing for the baby's safety, hurriedly asked the doctor, "How is the baby? Has the baby been injured?"
The doctor didn't respond, but asked her to turn to the side, said sorry, and then used his fingertips to gently press her back from light to heavy pressure, asking her if she was in pain.
The rest of the body is fine, but the tailbone area is very painful when pressed.
After the diagnosis, the doctor said that the fetus was fine for the time being, but she should keep a close eye on it and be sure to tell him immediately if she felt any abdominal discomfort.
She was squatting on the ground when her spine couldn't bear the strain and was injured. The doctor prescribed some ointments and told her to rest in bed and move around as little as possible.
