Chapter 4 Neighbors

The further in you drive, the wider the scene becomes.

On both sides of the asphalt road, there are dense farmlands, and the green and yellow rice is heavy. There is no ripple even when the wind blows. The scene is spectacular.

The further you go in, the denser the population becomes. Houses are built on both sides of the road, and there are vegetables in the vegetable gardens.

The yard was covered with purple and red flowers. Chen Man recognized the flower; it was called Impatiens.

The wide asphalt road adds to the village's superior atmosphere.

Most of the houses are small three-story villas, not particularly fancy, but they are quite large. There are also some brick and wooden houses, but both look rather run-down.

She came here once with her mother when she was five or six years old.

The memory is not very clear.

This place is so unfamiliar that even the road is wrong.

The car passed through a densely populated area and arrived at a spacious area with fitness equipment, stone benches and big trees.

The car slowed down gradually and drove a little further. On the left side of the road, a dilapidated-looking wooden house appeared in front of us.

The house itself was upright but dilapidated. The cement floor of the yard was badly damaged, covered with moss and scorched by the sun, and it looked as if no one had taken care of it.

There was an iron wire stretched on the wooden wall, with a few old people's clothes hung on it. There was also a pile of miscellaneous items next to the door, including worn-out shoes and firewood.

There are also some bags of pig feed, which are essential for going to college, hanging on the railings on the second floor.

The wing on the right side of the house was filled with pine needles.

In just a few glances, Chen Man had seen it all.

If you ask her to make a comment, it would be: dirty and messy.

The only consolation is that the yard is surrounded by Impatiens, which looks decadent yet beautiful.

Although Chen Man didn't have many memories, she immediately recognized that this was the new house she had lived in when she was a child and had just been renovated.

More than 20 years have passed now.

The house is over 20 years old, which is not a long time, but why does it look so dilapidated?

Everything is learned through comparison.

On the right side of the road, a luxurious Chinese-style villa shines brightly in the sunset.

The car turned right and stopped in the unobstructed yard in front of the gate of this Chinese-style villa.

"We're here, get off."

Chen Man knew it, but her mind was still immersed in the sharp contrast between the two.

She thought that if she were the one living in this mansion, the shabby and dirty family across the street would probably be speechless.

It feels like opening the door of a bright and beautiful house and seeing a garbage dump right outside.

Chen Man thought about it and felt that it was not right. She couldn't say that about her grandmother's house.

"Oh, okay."

Xu Junyang had already gotten out of the car to get his suitcase.

Chen Man hurried forward to help, but Xu Junyang was holding a suitcase in one hand and didn't let her take it.

"Your grandmother's house is across the street. Do you remember it?"

This casual remark made Chen Man confused and puzzled.

What do you mean you still remember it? It sounds like she's been here before.

Although he had indeed been there, how did he know?

"Oh, I came here once when I was a kid, and I still have a little impression of my grandma's house. It still looks a little strange today."

Xu Junyang curled the corners of his lips. The door of the main room was open and he walked in front.

With a lift of his hands, he easily stepped over the threshold carrying two heavy suitcases.

Because of the force, the shirt was stretched by his muscles, and it was obvious that his arms were very strong.

Are all men so strong?

Chen Man followed him into the main room. Looking at the room full of junk piled up like mountains, the muscles at the corners of her mouth twitched automatically.

"Who's going outside?" An old and weak voice came from the door on the right.

"It's me, Junyang, grandma."

Xu Junyang put down the suitcase, gestured to Chen Man, and walked in.

"Jun Yang, are you off work?" The old voice was filled with a smile.

"Um."

When Chen Man walked in, she saw an old man with gray hair, wrinkles on his face and a kind smile lying on the bed.

She was wondering why the house was so messy the moment before, but the next moment when she saw her grandmother, her tears started streaming down her face.

"grandmother."

The old man on the bed was stunned for a moment, then his expression became surprised.

"Old Man?"

Chen Man walked over, squatted on the bed, and held the old woman's hand. "It's me, grandma. Grandma, I called you many times, why didn't you answer?"

The old man took his hand away to wipe the tears from her face and said with a smile: "My cell phone, sometimes I forget where I put it."

"Didn't I buy you a lanyard? You can hang it on it at any time so it won't fall off."

"It's very tight when it's hung up."

Chen Man shrugged and wanted to pull out a piece of paper. There were only some dusty bottles and jars and some obviously new medicine bottles on the bedside table.

She had no choice but to open her bag. When she was distracted, she realized that Xu Junyang had already left.

"Grandma, when did you get sick? Why does it seem so serious? Look at you, your hair has turned so white."

"It's normal when you get old. You get sick more often. How come you're here so suddenly? And you can find the way?"

"I had been planning to come and see you for a long time, but my contract hasn't expired yet, and it's been hard to adjust, so I've put it off until now. Grandma, now that mom is gone, there's no one to take care of you in your old age. I'll take care of you in the future, so don't worry."

Chen Man found that she couldn't mention the word "mother". When she did, her throat would choke and her voice would be hoarse and broken.

Grandma's eyes gradually turned red, and her kind face was filled with tears, which was particularly heartbreaking.

She cried to Chen Man, "Poor thing, your mother passed away at such a young age. Do you know what sin my family has committed? One after another, they all died so young. Your mother and your father, both didn't live past fifty. God, why do you have to mess with poor people like us?"
