Chapter Fifty-Eight

Kong Fusheng hadn't expected this person to speak so rudely: "Can't you speak properly?" Shang Mang glanced at him: "I'm a ghost, why should I speak human language?"

Kong Fusheng took a deep breath: "Before they die, aren't all ghosts human?"

Shang Mang chuckled, "Then your scholarship is lacking. A ghost fetus is a ghost fetus from birth, not after death." Kong Fusheng gritted his teeth. This man was truly strange. He would get angry if someone called him a monster, and he would still get angry if someone said he wasn't a monster. He was contradictory. Kong Fusheng turned his head away, his throat burning with pain.

For the next few days, meals were delivered only once a day, each time by smiling villagers. The person they had just met never set foot in again. They were left to wait there, bored and listless.

Meng Yingying didn't wake up during this time. Several times, the others came to nudge her, but she didn't respond at all. If it weren't for the fact that they could still feel her even breathing, they would have almost thought she was dead. Meng Yingying felt light as a feather, as if she were floating on clouds. She was extremely exhausted, and she slept very comfortably. It was the most comfortable sleep she had had since she transmigrated into the book.

She didn't know how much time had passed before she woke up, feeling dizzy and lightheaded, her vision blurry. She rubbed her eyes and realized that they weren't asleep; they were all awake.

A resentful voice rang out in front of her: "Senior Meng, you slept for four days, that's impressive." During those four days, Kong Fusheng suffered severe mental torment. The Ghost Embryo had been watching Meng Yingying with its dark eyes for who knows how long, yet Meng Yingying slept soundly and didn't wake up. He even suspected that the Ghost Embryo had killed her with its gaze.

As a result, she breathed smoothly and slept peacefully, even leaning on the ghost fetus's shoulder several times, which was truly terrifying to think about. Senior Meng would be terrified when he woke up and learned all this. Kong Fusheng had just opened his mouth when an undeniable gaze fell on him, and he closed his mouth again.

Meng Yingying stretched and muttered, "It's a miracle that I can sleep for three days in this godforsaken place."

A voice echoed from the side, "It truly is a miracle." Recognizing the familiar tone, Meng Yingying naturally turned her head. Seeing that his first thought was actually one of relief, she asked, "Has anything happened these past few days?"

Shang Mang looked extremely bored and said lazily, "Nothing special."

Meng Yingying opened her mouth: "Nothing happened?" Three days had passed and nothing had happened, which matched the original book's setting. Did the plot not need to continue? As if in response to her words, a strange figure appeared outside the temple, hunching over and running in quickly.

Zhou Xiuqi had been leaning against the exit. He grabbed the man's collar, and the man cried out in pain. Zhou Xiuqi thought the voice sounded familiar. Judging from Meng Yingying's figure, he should be a teenager. It was still dark outside, so what was he doing running over there?

Zhou Xiuqi's eyes widened slightly, and his breathing quickened. Meng Yingying also saw the boy's face clearly; he looked almost exactly like Zhou Xiuqi, except the boy's face was still immature while Zhou Xiuqi was already mature. She immediately connected the dots and realized that he had a younger brother in this village, Zhou Xiushan.

He is Zhou Xiushan.

Meng Yingying immediately stood up from the ground and walked over there.

Zhou Xiushan gasped for breath, "Brother Daoist, I, I, I'll help you escape. They, they've all left tonight." Zhou Xiuqi pursed his lips, "You can't help us."

Zhou Xiushan blushed: "Brother Daoist, although I don't have any magic, I'm very familiar with this place. You can trust me. I'm different from them; I can save you."

Zhou Xiuqi's expression was not good. Meng Yingying knew that this male lead was a turning point in the plot, a point where the plot would continue.

Seeing that they were all silent, and Zhou Xiushan's face was getting redder and redder, and he was becoming very flustered, Meng Yingying asked, "How are you going to take us out?"

Seeing that she was paying attention to him, Zhou Xiushan cautiously offered his opinion: "They are all gathered in the center of the village today, and I know the exit of this place."

His mind was very clear; he didn't seem like a dead person.

Meng Yingying: "It is to leave the dead."

Upon hearing those three words, Zhou Xiushan's pupils dilated slightly before his emotions quickly dissipated: "I know." He was a unique individual who could remain lucid even in the mortuary.

Zhou Xiuqi's expression returned to normal, but he still frowned: "You will die."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Xiushan paused for a moment before quickly saying, "I'm not afraid of death, but I feel a sense of closeness to you as soon as I see you, and I don't want to see you die here."

Zhou Xiuqi's pupils constricted slightly.

To escape, they had to follow the plot; otherwise, they'd be trapped here forever. Sure enough, the faint barrier that had been there a few days ago was gone tonight, replaced by an eerie silence and a dark, windy night. They were all prepared, but there wasn't a single corpse. Tonight, the place resembled an ordinary village.

Meng Yingying wondered what would happen next. Would Tan Yuhua suddenly appear and slit their throats? Or would it be something else? She became wary.

Strangely, the further they went, the faster it got light.

Before he knew it, he had arrived at the door of Shouquan's house. Red couplets were pasted up, and the aroma of wine filled the air. A lively, bustling atmosphere permeated the surroundings. Zhou Xiushan stared at these things, feeling suffocated: "It's...it's...too late..."

He suddenly became unable to speak coherently, and could not speak when certain taboos were mentioned.

The lively shouts and calls rang in their ears. Meng Yingying observed everything; it all seemed so festive. A woman carrying a board passed by them cheerfully and said, "Oh dear, hurry up and grab a seat! The village chief is hosting a banquet today. If you outsiders don't go, you won't get to drink the Butterfly Fragrance Wine."

A banquet at Shouquanli?

What is all of this now?

Unable to fathom the plot, Meng Yingying and the others could only follow the old woman's instructions and go inside, where they sat down. A rich fragrance wafted into their nostrils, like the scent of flowers mixed with the aroma of strong white wine. Meng Yingying didn't like drinking, but the moment she smelled it, she felt her mouth go dry.

Zhou Xiushan sat on the stool, somewhat uneasy. He opened his mouth and said, "Ah...ah...ah..." He was indicating to them that he could no longer speak. Zhou Xiuqi looked at him with a gloomy expression.

“Perhaps this is a memory,” Xiao Zheyu, who had been silent until now, spoke up. “The fabric they are wearing is the kind that became popular more than ten years ago.”

So, was this to let them know what happened in Xinghua Village more than ten years ago? Meng Yingying sat there, suddenly realizing that Shang Mang hadn't come in. How could he not have come in?

Without a second thought, Meng Yingying stood up. Had she forgotten him outside?
