Chapter 113 Integration of Education and Ecology

As village ecotourism flourishes and ecological protection efforts deepen, Lin Yue has turned her attention to education. She understands that cultivating children's ecological awareness is key to laying a solid foundation for the village's sustainable development. Only by allowing ecological concepts to take root in the young minds of children can we ensure the long-term protection of this land's green mountains and clear waters, and pass on the village's ecological beauty to future generations.

Lin Yue first contacted the village school and had in-depth exchanges with the principal and teachers. She proposed the idea of fully integrating ecological protection knowledge into school education, an idea that received high recognition and strong support from the school. As a result, a series of colorful ecological courses and practical activities were launched on campus.

In classroom teaching, ecology courses are cleverly integrated into different subjects. In language arts classes, teachers select classic poems and prose that describe natural beauty and praise nature for children to recite and learn. For example, when studying Wang Wei's "Autumn Evening in the Mountain Dwelling" from the Tang Dynasty, teachers guide children to appreciate the beautiful imagery of the poem while feeling the tranquility and harmony of nature. They encourage children to describe their understanding of the natural scene in the poem in words, thus enhancing their ability to appreciate and express the beauty of nature. In science classes, ecological knowledge is a key focus. Teachers systematically explain the components of ecosystems, energy flow, and the principles of material cycling. For example, when explaining food chains, using the forests surrounding villages as an example, they elaborate on the predator-prey relationships between foxes, rabbits, and grass, and how a problem in one link would have a chain reaction on the entire forest ecosystem. Through intuitive examples and vivid explanations, children deeply understand the importance of ecological balance. In art class, children were encouraged to use their paintbrushes to depict the village ecology as they saw it. Some children drew golden waves of wheat and flying birds in the village fields; others created a painting of a forest concert against the backdrop of mountains and forests, with various small animals playing music happily in the woods. These works fully demonstrated the children's love for and unique understanding of the village ecology.

To help children better integrate theoretical knowledge with real-life experiences, the school has organized a variety of practical activities. Among these, the construction of a small ecological garden on campus is the most popular. Under Lin Yue's guidance and assistance, the school cleared a space in a corner of the campus, and the children, divided into groups, participated in the planning and construction of the garden. Led by their teachers, they learned how to identify different plant seeds and how to sow, water, fertilize, and weed. Each group was responsible for caring for a different plant area, and the children meticulously tended to their plants like precious treasures. During this process, they also encountered many difficulties. For example, many children initially knew very little about plants, mistaking weeds for flower seedlings, and they didn't know how to properly fertilize, leading to poor growth in some plants. To address these issues, the teachers organized a plant knowledge lecture, inviting elderly farmers from the village to explain the characteristics and planting techniques of common plants, and to teach the children how to properly fertilize and prune branches. When spring arrives, the small garden is full of flowers and butterflies flutter about. Children observe bees collecting nectar and butterflies pollinating among the flowers, truly experiencing the harmony and beauty of the ecosystem.

In addition to the school's ecological garden, the school organizes regular village ecological field trips. Led by their teachers, the children venture into the village's forests, fields, and streams to observe the village's ecological environment firsthand. In the forests, they learn about various trees and wild plants, understanding their growth habits and ecological functions. On one occasion, during a field trip, the children discovered a rare wild orchid, and the teacher used this opportunity to explain the importance of wild plant conservation and the dangers of illegally harvesting wild plants. In the fields, the children witnessed the hard work of farmers, learning about the crop cultivation process and the difference between traditional and ecological agriculture. They also participated in simple farming activities, such as picking vegetables and helping farmers drive away pests, appreciating the hard work involved in producing food. By the streams, the children observed small fish, shrimp, and various aquatic creatures. The teacher explained water resource protection and the impact of water pollution on aquatic life. The children all expressed their determination to conserve water and protect the village's streams in the future.

Lin Yue actively participated in these educational activities, frequently visiting schools to share her experiences and stories of ecological conservation with the children. She would tell them about the barren lands she had seen during her travels, ruined by ecological damage, and the efforts people made to restore the ecosystem. Her eyes were filled with love for nature and a firm belief in ecological protection; her words were like a clear spring, nourishing the children's hearts. Once, Lin Yue took the children to a hillside where afforestation was underway. She picked up a sapling and personally demonstrated how to plant it correctly. The children gathered around her, learning attentively. Lin Yue smiled and said to the children, "Children, look, this sapling is just like you; it needs our care to grow strong. Today, we plant this tree to make our village more beautiful and nature more vibrant." The children nodded, carefully planting the sapling and making their own wishes for ecological conservation.
