Chapter 22 Panic and Reassurance

The morning sunlight, as if drained of all its strength, weakly pierced through the veil of mist, laboriously casting its light upon the village mercilessly shrouded in disease. That light, which should have been warm and full of hope, now appeared so pale and powerless, as if corroded by the fear that permeated the village. The entire village resembled an isolated island besieged by dark forces; the oppressive atmosphere, like heavy dark clouds, weighed heavily on the hearts of every villager, and fear, like invisible vines, relentlessly entwined itself around every inch of their thoughts.

In the simple infirmary, Lin Yue was intently treating a patient whose condition had worsened. Her brows were furrowed, her eyebrows seemingly pulled together by threads of worry, forming a deep "川" (river) shape. Fine beads of sweat glistened on her forehead in the slightly chilly morning air, like sparkling pearls, yet revealing boundless tension. Her eyes were filled with focus and worry, her gaze like the sharp eyes of an eagle, not missing a single subtle change in the patient. The patient lay on the bed, his face as sallow as a withered leaf, his lips cracked like parched earth, the fissures like the parched wounds of the ground. The occasional groans of pain from the patient echoed in the quiet, somewhat eerie infirmary, each sound like a sharp knife, piercing the hearts of everyone present.

Chen Yu hurried into the infirmary, his steps quick and heavy, each one carrying an uneasy rhythm. His face was as grave as the sky before a storm, his eyes filled with deep worry. "Yue'er, the situation outside isn't good. The villagers are in chaos, many are gathered at the village entrance, and the atmosphere of panic is growing stronger. I don't know what to do." Lin Yue slightly raised her head, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes, a gaze like a shooting star streaking across the night sky, brief yet profound. She sighed softly, a sigh filled with helplessness and exhaustion: "This infectious disease is spreading rapidly, it's inevitable that everyone is afraid. I'll stabilize this patient's condition first. You go and see if you can calm the situation down and prevent everyone's emotions from completely spiraling out of control." Chen Yu nodded, that firm nod as if to encourage himself, then turned and strode out of the infirmary. His figure quickly disappeared through the doorway, leaving only a trail of footsteps fading into the distance.

In the open space at the village entrance, a group of villagers had gathered, discussing the situation amongst themselves, their voices filled with fear and unease. A young mother clutched her child tightly, her body trembling like a leaf in the wind, her eyes filled with terror, as if the end of the world was imminent. Her voice was choked with sobs, like the mournful cry of a wounded animal: "What are we going to do? I heard the illness is getting worse. Will we all die? My child is so young, he can't be harmed." Nearby, an old man leaned on a cane, his weathered face etched with deep wrinkles, each wrinkle seeming to hold endless sorrow. He sighed deeply, his face full of worry: "Alas, what terrible thing have we done? How could such a terrible disease suddenly come to us? We've lived our whole lives honestly, how did we end up like this?"

Chen Yu rushed to the village entrance, took a deep breath, and then raised his voice, shouting, "Everyone, calm down, don't panic. We are fighting this disease, and Lin Yue is doing everything she can to treat the patients. We are not helpless." However, his words did not calm the villagers as he had hoped; instead, they were like a drop of water in a boiling oil pan, causing even more unease.

"Chen Yu, are your methods really effective? This disease looks terrifying. Can those homemade protective gear really stop the germs? They seem like they're made of paper; they're completely unreliable." A middle-aged villager said loudly with a face full of doubt. His eyes were filled with distrust, his brows were furrowed, and the muscles on his face twitched slightly with tension.

“That’s right, and now there are more and more patients, with new people getting fevers every day. We feel like we have no hope at all, like we’re groping in the dark and can’t find a way out,” another villager chimed in, his voice tinged with despair, his eyes staring blankly into the distance, as if he could already see death beckoning to them.

Chen Yu tried to keep his voice calm, attempting to reassure everyone with a firm gaze: "Everything we are doing now is meaningful. Although the situation is serious, we cannot lose faith. Lin Yue has already developed some treatment ideas, and we are constantly improving our protective measures. We cannot afford to panic. As long as we unite, we will definitely find a way."

Just then, Lin Yue arrived at the village entrance. Looking at the panicked villagers, she felt a sharp pain in her heart, as if countless needles had pierced her. She strode quickly to the center of the crowd, her firm steps seemingly carrying an invisible force. She said loudly, “Folks, I know you are all very scared right now, and I know this disease is terrible. But we cannot let fear defeat us. We have already made many efforts—disinfection, isolation, treatment—each step is a solid step we take towards defeating this disease. We cannot give up because of fear; we must believe in ourselves and believe that our efforts will be rewarded.”

A woman rushed over as if she'd seen a savior, grabbing Lin Yue's arm. Tears streamed down her face as she cried, "Lin Yue, you can't abandon us! My husband is so sick, I really don't know what to do. I feel like my world is collapsing. You have to save him!" Lin Yue held the woman's hand tightly; her hand was warm and strong, as if conveying a powerful force. "Sister," she said, "we won't give up on any patient. You have to be strong. You're your husband's pillar of support; you can't collapse now. Your husband needs your support. Let's work together, and we'll definitely get him better."
