Chapter 5 First Use of Medical Skills

The morning sun shone on every corner of the small village, and Lin Yue got up early as usual. After these few days, she had gradually gotten used to the rhythm of life here; although it was tough, it also had a unique tranquility. Today, she planned to go to the village warehouse to help organize supplies, a collective labor activity she and Chen Yu were participating in together.

As Lin Yue approached the warehouse, she heard a commotion. She quickened her pace and saw a group of villagers gathered together, their expressions tense. Pushing through the crowd, Lin Yue saw a little boy lying on the ground, pale-faced, his forehead covered in sweat, and a clear wound on his calf from which blood was seeping. The boy's mother was weeping uncontrollably beside him, and the surrounding villagers looked anxious but helpless.

Seeing this, Lin Yue immediately squatted down and quickly assumed the role of a military doctor. She first gently pressed a clean strip of cloth against the little boy's wound to try to stop the bleeding, while calmly observing his condition. She softly comforted the little boy, "Little friend, don't be afraid, Auntie is a doctor, I'll make you feel better." The little boy's eyes welled up with tears because of the pain and fear, but he still managed to nod.

Just then, the village's barefoot doctor rushed over. He examined the little boy's wound, frowned, and took out some herbs from his medicine box, preparing to crush them and apply them to the wound. Lin Yue glanced at it and quickly stopped him, saying, "That won't do. The wound is so deep; it needs to be cleaned and disinfected first, otherwise it's easy for it to get infected." The barefoot doctor gave Lin Yue a somewhat disapproving look, "We've always treated wounds this way. This child just fell; it's nothing serious."

Lin Yue ignored his questions. She looked around and asked a nearby villager to fetch some clean well water, then asked another villager for some baijiu (Chinese liquor). After bringing the water and liquor, Lin Yue carefully washed her hands with the liquor, a move that surprised the villagers, who didn't understand why she was doing this. Lin Yue explained as she did so: "There are many invisible bacteria on our hands. Washing them with baijiu can reduce the risk of bacterial infection of wounds."

Then, she carefully rinsed the little boy's wound with a clean cloth dipped in well water. The little boy cried out loudly from the pain, and the villagers began to waver, feeling that Lin Yue was torturing the child. The little boy's mother was so heartbroken that she wanted to take her child away, but Lin Yue held her hand tightly and said with a firm look in her eyes, "Sister, believe me, if we don't treat the wound now, it will be more troublesome later."

After cleaning the wound, Lin Yue found some dirt and sand inside, which she needed to remove. She asked a villager for a clean, thin twig, disinfected it with white wine, and gently picked out the dirt and sand. During this process, the little boy almost fainted from the pain, and the surrounding villagers all advised Lin Yue to stop torturing the child. But Lin Yue knew that if these foreign objects weren't removed, the wound could become infected, with unimaginable consequences.

After cleaning away the mud and sand, Lin Yue disinfected the wound again with baijiu (a type of Chinese liquor). Then, she took out a piece of sterile gauze she always carried with her from the modern world, which she had brought with her and had been reluctant to use. She gently covered the wound with the gauze and bandaged it with a strip of cloth. The whole process was completed in one smooth motion, with skillful and professional technique.

After finishing all this, Lin Yue checked the little boy's other physical condition and only breathed a sigh of relief after confirming there were no other problems. The little boy's crying gradually subsided, perhaps because the pain had eased, or perhaps because he was tired from crying. The little boy's mother looked at Lin Yue gratefully, "Thank you so much, Chen family daughter-in-law. I really don't know what I would have done without you." Lin Yue smiled and said, "You're welcome, it's what I should do. However, please take care of the child's wound these few days, make sure it doesn't get wet, and come to me immediately if there are any abnormalities."

The surrounding villagers looked at Lin Yue with surprise and curiosity. They hadn't expected this city girl to have such a skill in healing and saving lives. At this moment, the barefoot doctor walked over and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Mrs. Chen, your method is quite novel; I've never seen it before." Lin Yue smiled and said, "These are just some basic medical common sense. Where I'm from, we always disinfect wounds strictly like this to avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble."

However, not all villagers approved of Lin Yue's approach. An older villager frowned and said, "Your method seems to have stopped the bleeding, but we've never done it this way before. Who knows if there will be problems later? What if something happens to the child?" His words resonated with some other villagers, and the discussion resumed.

Lin Yue knew that getting the villagers to accept modern medical concepts wouldn't be easy, but she wasn't discouraged. She patiently explained, "Uncle, I know you're worried, but this method of treating wounds has been proven through a lot of practice. If it's not disinfected, the wound will get infected, causing a fever, or even more serious illnesses. We must trust science."

Despite Lin Yue's sincere words, some villagers remained skeptical. At this moment, Aunt Liu stepped forward. "Everyone, please stop arguing. The child seems much better now; let's observe the situation first. Chen's wife means well, and besides, she's a military doctor; she must have her reasons." Aunt Liu was highly respected in the village, and her words temporarily silenced the villagers' argument.

Back home, Chen Yu heard about Lin Yue's rescue of the little boy. He looked at Lin Yue with admiration in his eyes, "You did a great job today. No matter what others say, the fact is you saved that child." Lin Yue smiled, "I just did what I was supposed to do. However, it will take time for people to accept modern medical concepts."
