Chapter 31 Someone's Here
The front of the car veered into the dry waterway, and the headlights were barely visible in the darkness.
The Liu family chased after him, thinking they would never catch him, when they heard a loud commotion.
When they got closer, by the light of the car headlights, they could see that Li Guangming's head was covered in blood, obscuring his face.
The Liu family was horrified.
Old Liu was about to get the man out quickly when Old Man Liu shouted, "Don't touch him! Turn off the light!"
Old Liu's hands trembled, and his lips quivered: "Dad, if we don't get him out quickly, what if he bleeds to death?"
Old Man Liu said with a stern face, "Even if he gets better, he'll still come after us. You go and save him."
Boss Liu's expression changed, but he ultimately decided to go into the driver's seat and fiddle with it. After fiddling with it for a while, the headlights finally went out.
In the darkness, the Liu family members looked at each other, their bodies feeling as heavy as if they were filled with lead.
If we don't save him, judging by all the blood he's lost, he'll probably die, right?
Although Li Guangming, who had fallen into the waterway and was pinned down by the shoulder, was unable to move, he was still conscious. At this moment, he felt cold all over and thought to himself that he was probably about to die.
After a moment of silence, Old Man Liu spoke up: "Push the car into the ditch, and once you're done, go home and keep what happened today to yourselves."
Once a person dies, no one will know why Li Guangming drank alcohol in the middle of the night and insisted on leaving.
The matter was then covered up.
As the Liu family finished their work and prepared to head back, they heard a commotion coming from not far away, and their alertness immediately rose.
It's hard for a bicycle wheel not to make noise on an uneven road.
The journey, from dawn till dusk, along unfamiliar country roads, had been filled with apprehension as Chang Guangtao, a young man in his late teens, had been marked by a lack of encounters with anyone after dark.
"Auntie, have we gotten lost? It's completely dark, what are we going to do tonight?"
Song Lubai was also feeling uneasy, but since she had already come this far, she had to find out the truth. It would be best if Li Guangming was alright. She would shamelessly stay at Liu Mei's parents' house that night. If something happened, she wouldn't regret it.
"I can see the bridge ahead. We're on the right track and almost there."
At this moment, under the bridge, the men of the Liu family were crouching behind the vehicle like thieves, not daring to make a sound.
They hoped that passersby would quickly leave the bridge and completely ignore the anomaly below.
Although the truck was pushed off the bridge, the problem could be spotted at a glance with just a little light.
The Liu family could only hope that the not-so-bright moonlight tonight would help them.
The bicycle quickly reached the bridge, and a strong smell of gasoline wafted over.
Song Lubai sniffed and smelled another unusual odor.
The smell of gasoline was mixed with a fishy smell.
"Stop, stop, stop."
The Liu family was terrified.
"Guangtao, look what that is! Where did this huge thing come from in this ditch? And it smells like gasoline."
Chang Guangtao parked the car on the side of the road, felt his way down the bridge, and then touched the cold car body.
"Auntie, this looks like a car."
Song Lubai's heart skipped a beat.
Why is there a car here out of the blue?
How could such a valuable and rare item as a car be lying here so quietly?
"Check if anyone's inside!"
Song Lubai was about to slip down the edge when she caught a glimpse of a dark figure moving down the ditch. She shouted, "Guangtao, come up quickly! There are people down there!"
Chang Guangtao was startled, but reacted quickly and scrambled up to catch up.
"Auntie, it looks like someone's dead down there. My hands feel slippery."
Chang Guangtao's voice was filled with helplessness.
Song Lubai's heart sank.
She suspected that the person "dead" below was Li Guangming.
She was still too late.
The dark figure below the ditch fell silent, and for a moment Song Lubai didn't know what to do.
There are countless people below. What if she and Chang Guangtao act rashly and get harmed by the villains among them?
She remained silent, and the area below was quiet, as if waiting for her reaction.
Song Lubai stood there, feeling cold all over, analyzing the situation in her mind, when a sound came from the road ahead, and two headlights suddenly illuminated the road ahead.
The Liu family members in the ditch suddenly changed their expressions.
Oh no, oh no!
Yesterday, a car came to the village and went to Aunt Zhao's house at the east end of the village. The people who got out of the car were all wearing green military uniforms.
Aunt Zhao's third son sacrificed his life, and these soldiers came to offer their condolences.
But this car left the village and headed downhill, so how did it reappear here after dark?
Old Liu, his face covered, instructed: "Cover your faces and run for me right now."
Several male members of the Liu family followed suit, covering their faces as they climbed up the ditch and ran back to the village.
The car headlights drew closer and closer, until Song Lubai could clearly see the backs of the five people fleeing.
She jumped up and waved her arms at the people in the car.
The car stopped quickly.
Two tall, long-legged men in green military uniforms got out of the car.
"What's wrong, comrade? Do you need help?"
Song Lubai: "There's been a car accident here. It must have been done by those five people. Comrades, the person lying down is bleeding and needs your help."
After saying that, Wei Yang said to his companion in the driver's seat, "Get out of the car quickly, you go after the person, we'll rescue them."
Catching the bad guys is important, but saving lives is even more important right now.
The three had a clear division of labor, and after the driver got out of the car, he chased after the five figures all the way.
Wei Yang, with a flashlight in his mouth, went down into the ditch and saw a blood-soaked figure lying below. He checked the person's breathing.
Song Lubai finally saw the person below clearly; it really was Li Guangming: "How about it, you're not dead, are you?"
Wei Yang frowned. "He's still breathing, but he's lost too much blood. We need to get him to the hospital right away."
Li Guangming's right shoulder was trapped under the wheel, but fortunately there was a stone under the wheel to prevent it from being crushed completely.
It took the four of them a lot of effort to pull the person out.
After Li Guangming was put into the car, a night breeze blew, and Song Lubai was surprised to find that she was covered in a cold sweat.
Five people could squeeze into the car. The driver who was chasing them hadn't returned yet, but Li Guangming needed to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible.
Where are you going?
Song Lubai's main purpose in coming today was to see Li Guangming, so naturally she had to go back now.
"Let's take him to the hospital in the county or city first, but we don't know if the county hospital can treat him."
Li Guangming couldn't afford to delay, and of the two men, Wei Yang and his companion, only Wei Yang knew how to drive.
Wei Yang then instructed, "Wu Hua, you wait here for Lao Ying. I'll go to the police station when we get to the commune."
Song Lubai quickly said, "You can borrow the bicycle first."
Wei Yang nodded, "Then that's settled for now. You wait here for Eagle. We'll be leaving now. Once we've finished our business, I'll be waiting for you at the county hospital tomorrow."
Wu Hua patted his shoulder: "Don't worry, those bastards won't get away."
On the bus, Li Guangming seemed to have lost all feeling; he didn't even utter a sound when the vehicle jolted and was thrown around.
Song Lubai was really afraid that he had stopped breathing.
Wei Yang drove very fast, not forgetting to ask what had happened before.
Song Lubai stopped Chang Guangtao, who was about to speak, and said first, "We went to the countryside to visit relatives, but we weren't familiar with this area, so we walked until dark. We rode our bicycles to the bridge and smelled gasoline. We saw dark shadows moving below. Luckily, you came when we were at a loss..."
