Chapter 17 Undercurrents Beneath the Stage

Liang Shaozun straightened up and slowly walked towards Cheng Muyun, his eyes fixed on Xu Zhuohua. "Where did you find such a beautiful woman?"

Cheng Muyun blocked Liang Shaozun's outstretched hand. "Don't be silly. This is different. If you like it, you'll have to put up with it. This is my person."

Liang Shaozun looked like he'd seen a ghost. "Why are you acting so strange today?"

Cheng Muyun punched him lightly. "I think you're the strange one. We usually meet at the Paramount Ballroom. Why are you in the mood to watch a play today?"

Liang Shaozun reluctantly shifted his gaze from Xu Zhuohua's face. Xu Zhuohua hid completely behind Cheng Muyun, feeling that Liang Shaozun was even more terrifying than Cheng Muyun.

Compared to this, Cheng Muyun seems much more amiable and approachable.

"Let's go. It's not that I want to watch the play today, but that person likes to listen to it."

Cheng Muyun asked, "Who is it? Is someone worth treating so carefully?"

Liang Shaozun finally became a little serious, "Tsk, I say, you went back to Dongzhou and forgot your brain back home? You mean that guy!"

Cheng Muyun frowned. "Can't you be more direct?"

Liang Shaozun leaned close to Cheng Muyun's ear and whispered something.

Cheng Muyun's shoulders suddenly straightened, and he stiffly turned his head to look at Xu Zhuohua.

Xu Zhuohua sensed a hint of unease in his eyes.

What's the meaning?

Cheng Muyun nudged Liang Shaozun's shoulder, "If you can't explain things clearly over the phone, come on, come on, you go in first, I'll be there soon."

Liang Shaozun walked in and waved his hand, "Don't keep that person waiting too long."

Cheng Muyun turned around, his tall figure blocking the faint lantern light in front of the courtyard gate. His handsome brows were slightly furrowed as he pondered something.

He gently grasped Xu Zhuohua's shoulder and asked with a hint of helplessness, "Do you like listening to opera?"

Xu Zhuohua was puzzled. "It's alright."

The man seemed relieved and said, "If I had known we were meeting him today, I wouldn't have brought you. This guy is a bit scary. Just enjoy the show. With me here, no one will do anything to you."

Xu Zhuohua's doubts deepened. Who could make Cheng Muyun so afraid?

She nodded. She knew all the historical figures; after all, everyone was just a human being, and there was nothing to be afraid of.

Cheng Muyun looked Xu Zhuohua up and down. "Okay, let's go then."

The two entered the courtyard, where many lanterns hung from the large locust tree, illuminating the magnificent opera stage in front. The gilded black plaque bore the two large characters "Liyuan" (Pear Garden), written in bold, elegant strokes, exuding grandeur.

Stepping inside the building felt like falling into a paradise.

On the stage, a female lead, with graceful steps and a spring-like smile, sang, while the audience watched as four rows of square tables were neatly arranged and every seat was taken.

In the back row, a few old men with their queues still intact were sitting in the elegant seats with a table and a chair, enjoying the view from the stage.

Cheng Muyun walked towards the private room on the second floor, and Xu Zhuohua followed behind him, step by step, up to the second floor. The golden lanterns hanging from the beams were suspended by thin iron wires, as if they were floating in the air.

The sounds of opera, music, and cheers; laughter from people, lanterns, and beautiful women—it's the perfect form of entertainment.

The best spot on the second floor has a square table, a government-issue chair in front of it, and two large square stools on each side.

Liang Shaozun sat on a stool, while the man next to him sat in an official's hat chair, listening intently to the opera, his fingers unconsciously swaying with the female lead's movements, completely absorbed in the performance.

The man was dressed in a blue robe, with very light-colored eyes, thin lips, and sharply defined eyebrows, making him appear to be an extremely cold-hearted person.

Xu Zhuohua stared intently, as if she had seen this man in a book before.

Cheng Muyun pulled Xu Zhuohua's arm and pressed her down slightly off-center. He ordered some snacks, asked Zhang Qi to watch over her, and then walked to another stool and sat down.

Behind them stood a row of people dressed in black police uniforms.

Xu Zhuohua frowned. This man could make Cheng Muyun put aside his arrogance and even follow the police station. His identity must be extraordinary.

Everyone listened attentively to the opera, and Xu Zhuohua simply started listening to it too. However, she didn't understand opera at all. There were no subtitles, and she didn't even know what the ornately dressed female lead was singing.

They could only awkwardly eat sunflower seeds and snacks.

As the song ended, applause broke out beside me. The man was clapping slowly and deliberately, a rather cold smile on his face.

The man took out a gold bar from his sleeve, beckoned the police officers, and said, "Give it to Mr. Mei, saying it's a gift from He De."

Xu Zhuohua looked at the gleaming gold bars and couldn't help but be surprised; they were really generous.

Upon closer reflection, a chill ran down my spine!

Mr. Mei? He De?

Mr. Mei, the opera singer? He De from the police station!

Mei Heming, the foremost of the Four Great Dan Performers! Chen Hede, Deputy Commissioner of the French Concession Police Station!

Mei Hok-ming, who is famous overseas, is not very well-known yet, but Chan Hok-tak is now the deputy commissioner of the police station.

Two years later, after Mei Heming became famous, he was invited to perform in various countries and his reputation soared. Later, he refused to perform for the Japanese and went on strike for two years.

Chen Hede was also influenced by his spirit, refused to recognize the new government, and protected the members' evacuation. Later, his secret was exposed, and he was shot dead in the street.

Both of them are good people, so how could they be associating with Cheng Muyun, this crazy young marshal? Cheng Muyun even said that Chen Hede is a terrible person?

After Mei Heming finished singing, the audience showered him with gold and silver valuables. After the police officer handed the gold bars to Mei Heming, everyone cheered, "Deputy Director Chen has come to support Mr. Mei again!"

In the blink of an eye, Mei Heming thanked the spectators, lifted the hem of her costume, and walked to Chen Hede's side.

Even with his heavy, exaggerated makeup, Xu Zhuohua could still see his inherent handsomeness.
