Xu Zhuohua covered her ears as Chen Hede pressed her against the wall. She listened to the sounds outside gradually disappear before slowly opening her eyes.
Chen Hede lowered his head, his voice cold, "Who would run towards the direction of the shooting? Are you stupid?"
Xu Zhuohua squatted in the corner, "It's so chaotic, how am I supposed to know where the shots were fired?"
Chen Hede took a step back, creating distance between them, turned to look around, and then his gaze fell on Xu Zhuohua.
"I feel like I've seen you somewhere before?"
Xu Zhuohua then looked up and saw blood flowing from Chen Hede's shoulder. She pouted, trying to block out the smell of blood, and said, "You really are a forgetful person."
Chen Hede seemed to remember something, "You're one of Cheng Muyun's men?"
Xu Zhuohua didn't know what to say. She was an independent person and didn't belong to a man, but in the current situation, it seemed that Cheng Muyun was her only support.
Reluctantly, he admitted, "Yes."
Upon hearing this, Chen Hede's face suddenly turned serious, and he took a step closer to Xu Zhuohua.
It reeked of a chilling, bloody stench, like a refrigerator suddenly opened, containing freshly slaughtered cattle and sheep.
Xu Zhuohua's heart sank. Chen Hede and Cheng Muyun didn't seem to get along. Wasn't she now walking into the lion's den?
"Who is Cheng Muyun to you?"
Xu Zhuohua swallowed hard, then steeled herself and said, "Cousin."
Anyway, you can't say he's your fiancé.
Chen Hede stroked his chin with his fingers. "So that's how it is. I thought it was his new love."
Xu Zhuohua secretly breathed a sigh of relief, stood up, and because she had been crawling on the ground, her clothes were covered in mud. She patted them off and said, "Thank you, Deputy Director Chen. I'll go down now so as not to delay your case any longer."
Chen Hede nodded, put the pistol back on his waist, and followed Xu Zhuohua downstairs.
Inside the lobby of the Paramount, besides the police officers and some Paramount waiters, all the guests had left.
Cheng Muyun has also disappeared without a trace.
Xu Zhuohua stood there, stunned. Just now, Cheng Muyun rushed over and hugged Luo Yunqiao. He guessed that Luo Yunqiao was being taken home by the frightened man.
But why doesn't he look for himself?
Even if it's just for the Xu family's eastward and southward journey, there's no need to be so heartless, isn't there? I'm a weak woman, facing such a dangerous situation, and all he's thinking about is picking up girls!
hateful!
Xu Zhuohua stomped her feet angrily.
Chen Hede chuckled softly, "How should I address you, Miss?"
"Xu Zhuohua".
“Miss Xu,” Chen Hede said slowly, “Young Marshal Cheng is probably too busy with a beauty in his arms to pay attention to you. If you don’t mind, I will take you back to the Cheng Mansion after I finish my work.”
Xu Zhuohua looked at Chen Hede, whose eyes were as clear and gentle as water.
It's hard not to believe he's a good person, after all, he's a good person who sacrificed himself to protect the organization, so deep down you won't be wary of him.
And it was already late at night, she didn't know the way back to Cheng Mansion, and it wasn't safe for her to be alone.
Chen Hede, who sacrificed himself for the country, is at least worthy of trust.
"Then I'll have to trouble Deputy Director Chen."
A smile remained on Chen Hede's lips. Known for his ruthlessness, Chen Hede had never seen a woman remain so calm and composed after learning his identity.
The smile that appeared out of nowhere chilled his men to the bone. Except in front of Mr. Mei, Chen Hede's smile always carried a murderous intent.
Xu Zhuohua casually found a place to sit and watched the police officers report the situation to Chen Hede. The man only nodded occasionally, deep in thought.
In less than half an hour, the murderer was caught. He was beaten beyond recognition and dragged in with his legs that looked like soft seaweed.
Chen Hede casually played with the gun that had been used in the attempted murder. "Browning, it's a waste to use it in your hands."
The man lay on the ground, spat, and said, "Pah! You bastard, you deserve to die!"
The smile that had been on Chen Hede's face vanished. He moved his fingers, and the police officer next to him struck the man's right hand with the butt of his gun, instantly tearing flesh apart. The man screamed in pain.
Xu Zhuohua, who had been watching, suddenly covered her eyes.
Good heavens! After witnessing such bloody scenes for two nights in a row, is the script she was given a little unreasonable?
Chen Hede was already used to this scene. He glanced at Xu Zhuohua with a bored expression, and smiled when he saw her frightened look.
I remembered her reaction last night.
"Alright, take him back for further interrogation."
Xu Zhuohua was restless and prayed that it would end soon when she suddenly noticed a strange smell around her.
It smells like the earthy odor of burning incense ash in a nunnery, but with a touch of captivating nostalgia.
It's hard to describe the smell; it's very faint, but you want to keep smelling it. It makes you feel happy all over. The smell is etched into your mind and you can't get it out of your head.
After the smell dissipated, Xu Zhuohua felt an emptiness in her heart.
This feeling?
Xu Zhuohua looked at the dancers who had just passed by her. The last one was cowering and clutching her stomach, which was abnormally curled up, as if hiding something.
Several dancers were led upstairs by the manager of the Paramount Ballroom, and Xu Zhuohua stared at the last dancer.
Could this dancer be the one hoarding opium? And what about Hu Moli?
She must have known, right?
Is she using drugs now?
Hu Moli is on good terms with the Japanese, but the Japanese haven't made a high-profile appearance in Xinhai City yet; the timing doesn't match up.
Suddenly, a black glove touched the shoulder of the last dancer, startling her, and Xu Zhuohua was also startled.
