The group quickened their pace, making a lot of noise. Cheng Yue glanced at them and smiled helplessly, knowing without even thinking what had happened.
That's how people in the village are; a few are sharp-tongued, but most are simple and honest.
The roof was almost finished, and the two baskets of steamed buns were ready.
Cheng Yue took out the prepared parchment paper, wrapped the three together, one for each person, and the steamed buns were just enough.
In no time, a makeshift cowshed was set up. Li Tieniu and the others climbed down the ladder, dusted off their pants, and were about to leave when they said, "Brother Chen An, now that everything's done, we're heading back."
If they don't leave soon, they'll be drooling; they don't want to lose face.
"No need to rush, please wait a moment."
Chen An glanced into the kitchen. When she smelled the aroma, she knew that Cheng Yue had gone to cook for everyone.
They are not people who like to take advantage of others.
Li Tieniu and the others thought Chen An had something to do, and just as they were about to ask, they saw Cheng Yue come out of the kitchen carrying a basket of things.
"Thank you all for helping with the construction of the cowshed today. I didn't have time to cook anything to treat you, so I just steamed some buns. Take one for each of you to tide you over."
"No, no, no need. It's still early, we're not hungry."
“We’ve already had the sweet soup, how can we still have steamed buns? Sister-in-law, you should take them back for the children.”
That basket was top-notch; there must have been at least twenty large steamed buns, enough for a family to eat for several meals. It wasn't appropriate for them to take it.
"There's food for the children. This is for you. I didn't have time to make much, only three for each of you. Take them quickly."
As Cheng Yue spoke, she stuffed the steamed buns into their hands one by one. The men were tough and couldn't resist her, so they could only take the hot buns and head down the mountain.
Li Tieniu was starving. He hadn't gone far when he opened the oil paper and took a bite. He was immediately stunned. It was a big steamed bun filled with pure meat!
The man traveling with him asked, puzzled, "What's wrong, Brother Tie Niu? What's with that expression?"
With such a strong aroma, it can't possibly taste bad.
She took a bite, then immediately exclaimed, her eyes wide, "My goodness, this is pure meat, and made with wheat flour! How could Sister Cheng be so generous..."
The others swallowed hard upon hearing this. Such good stuff should be taken back for their parents and children to try; they wouldn't want to eat it themselves.
After finishing the bite in his mouth, Li Tieniu wrapped up the rest and muttered, "This tastes so good, no wonder it can be exchanged for a whole cow."
He was uneducated and couldn't describe how delicious it was, but he felt that Cheng Yue's cooking was worth the price of a cow.
If you can make such a delicious steamed bun, you can't be any worse at making other things.
The group of people were grateful as they held the steamed buns, and excitedly ran home to share some with their parents and children.
They had never eaten steamed buns with white flour and meat in their lives; they were truly fortunate to have Cheng Yue's help.
After seeing off the group of men, Cheng Yue didn't rest. She took a broom and swept the yard.
The cowshed was just being built; they were sawing wood and mixing straw and mud, and the yard was a mess.
Cheng Yue had just finished cleaning the yard when Chen Lin returned, carrying a large basket of grass on his back and dragging a bundle in his hand.
"There's plenty of grass on the mountain, why did you cut so much at once?" Cheng Yue saw Chen Lin bent over from the weight of the grass and quickly took the basket off, scolding him with heartache.
Chen Lin patted his sleeves and grinned foolishly, "Mom, I'm very strong, I won't get tired. I'll feed the cow well so it can pull things tomorrow."
Cheng Yue poked Chen Lin's forehead, "Since Xiao Lin cares so much about the cow, then it's your responsibility from now on. If you get too tired, there won't be anyone to feed it!"
"I promise to take good care of the cow, and oh, I'll take good care of myself too!" Chen Lin patted his chest, his eyes shining brightly.
Chen An pointed to the corner of the wall and said, "Silly boy, you'd better hurry up and take your cow to check on the cowshed."
Chen Lin glanced at the corner of the wall and sure enough, there was a cowshed. He had only been gone for a short while, and the cowshed was already built? That was quite alarming.
After Cheng Yue explained what had happened, Chen Lin happily led the cow inside, personally feeding it handfuls of grass, his eyes filled with affection as if he were looking at his own mother.
A little while later, Chen Tong and Chen Ning also returned. After expressing their satisfaction with the cowshed, they also started to linger around the chicks and pigs, being extremely affectionate with them.
They truly are siblings...
Cheng Yue smiled helplessly, went into the kitchen, took out a piece of kelp, soaked it, washed it clean, and tore it into small pieces. She then took out the tofu she had bought a few days ago from her spatial storage, preparing to make kelp and tofu soup.
The thought of buns filled with walnut blossoms and pork sounds wonderful.
In the evening, as soon as the food was served, it attracted a crowd.
Chen Ning blinked and asked, "Mom, what kind of soup is this? It looks dark green. Is it tasty?"
Dark green? What kind of adjective is that? "Seaweed and tofu soup, made from that bag of long dried vegetables, tastes very fresh."
After Cheng Yue finished speaking, she took a sip and said with a satisfied look, "This is the taste, so fresh."
Seeing this, the children stopped asking questions and picked up their bowls, blowing on them and slurping them down.
Chen Tong raised his eyebrows. "Wow! It's really delicious, so fresh it'll make my eyebrows fall off!"
I never expected that something that doesn't look very appealing would taste so delicious.
Chen Lin took a bite of the meat bun and found it increasingly fragrant with each chew. "This bun is so delicious! So this is what walnut flowers taste like! It's really fragrant!"
"Mmm, delicious, and chewy!"
Chen Tong nodded frantically, "Let's go pick some more tomorrow."
Chen An reminded him, "There are also several walnut trees beyond the pine forest."
"What a family of foodies," Cheng Yue exclaimed.
Chen Ning pouted, "If I had known walnut flowers were so delicious, I wouldn't have had to suffer eating wild vegetables before."
"That's because my mother is a good cook; she even makes wild vegetables taste delicious."
"Yes, it's Mom who's amazing!"
As usual, the children showered Cheng Yue with compliments during the meal.
This isn't just good cooking skills; it's because there's meat and plenty of seasoning. Anyone could make it taste good. Cheng Yue thought to herself, but she was quite pleased with herself.
People who cook love it when others say it's delicious; it gives them a sense of accomplishment!
Especially these past few days, her three children's cheeks have swelled up at a visible rate, which has given her even more enthusiasm for cooking.
This is probably the joy of raising steamed buns.
Although I'm still skinny, I'm much better than before. My body has been neglected for too long, and I need to make up for it gradually.
Even her and Chen An's complexions were rosier than before, and they looked more energetic in the same clothes.
Sure enough, once the nutrition improved, my mental state was completely different.
The family ate until they were stuffed, and each of them let out a louder burp than the last.
Apart from Chen An, who was unable to move, the three children followed Cheng Yue for a walk in the yard to digest their food.
It seems I should cook less in the future to avoid upsetting my stomach, which would be troublesome to recover from.
