Chapter Ninety-Eight: The Imperial Envoy
Huo Ran actually dared to do this. Is it because he has a very powerful status that a mere county magistrate is nothing in front of him?
"Hero, please have mercy! I... I'm just a local official, not a god. How can I possibly look after everything? Natural disasters and man-made calamities are beyond my control. You can't blame me entirely!"
Huo Ran said coldly, "You can't control it, but you can help everyone. Not only have you done nothing, but you also treat people coldly and even seek pleasure. I already have evidence of your crimes of embezzlement, corruption, bullying the people and women. Sun Youcai, that evidence is enough for you to die a hundred times!"
Sun Youcai froze, and asked tremblingly, "Who...who exactly are you?"
Huo Ran whispered in his ear, "I am an official sent by the imperial court to investigate you, Sun Youcai. I know everything you have done, and the imperial court knows it too."
Sun Youcai's face turned deathly pale; he looked ashen.
Immediately afterwards, Huo Ran thrust his sword into Sun Youcai's back in front of everyone, killing Sun Youcai instantly!
Everyone stared in disbelief as Sun Youcai was splattered with blood on the spot, but then cheers erupted from the crowd, and everyone happily clapped their hands.
That corrupt official is finally dead; they finally have their day in the sun.
The village head, his face filled with shock, pointed at the already dead Sun Youcai and said in a panic, "This...this is murder! Murder is a crime!"
Huo Ran had killed the county magistrate, so at this point, no one knew whether or not to arrest him.
At this moment, Huo Ran pulled out a token from his waist and said to everyone, "I am an imperial envoy personally appointed by the Emperor, here to punish corrupt officials. So there is no need to panic. New officials will take office in the future."
When everyone saw that it was an official from the capital, they were no longer afraid and felt even more that Huo Ran had done the right thing.
The village head was also surprised. He directed everyone to disperse and had the trembling guards drag Sun Youcai's body away.
Those two security guards were the ones who had bullied Jiang Mi before. Now, they were nothing like their previous demeanor; they practically wanted Jiang Mi to not recognize them.
Jiang Mi didn't have time to pay attention to them at this moment; she was both curious and shocked by Huo Ran's identity.
"So you're the imperial envoy?" No wonder he always appears and disappears without a trace, and he also has an air of nobility that ordinary people don't have.
Huo Ran didn't want to expose himself so early, but seeing that this corrupt official was about to bully Jiang Mi again, he really couldn't hold back anymore.
"I'm sorry, but because it involves court politics, I cannot reveal my identity."
Jiang Mi expressed her understanding.
The village head sighed and said, "I knew it. You didn't look like someone from our small place. Sure enough, it's only been about a month since the new official took office. I wonder if the drought can wait that long."
Huo Ran knew, of course, that the current disaster situation was far more urgent.
"Don't worry, I'll have someone report this matter, and it will be resolved quickly. At that time, the village head will have to come and supervise it personally."
The village head quickly replied, "Of course, this is my responsibility."
Meanwhile, Sun Qinwan was unaware that her father had been executed on the spot. She was waiting for Jiang Xuan to come out outside Wutong Academy.
"Young Master Jiang."
When Sun Qinwan saw Jiang Xuan come out of the academy, she immediately went up to him, but then wondered if she was being too forward, so she quickly restrained herself.
This wasn't the first time Jiang Xuan had seen this woman. She had been waiting here before, but because the woman was the county magistrate's daughter, Jiang Xuan had only exchanged a few words with her. Seeing her again only made her feel annoyed.
"Miss Sun, is there something you need?"
Sun Qinwan didn't notice Jiang Xuan's impatience at all. She handed the food box she had brought to Jiang Xuan and said shyly, "Young Master Jiang, this is something I made myself. Please don't find it offensive."
People passed by, and some recognized Sun Qinwan's identity, jokingly teasing Jiang Xuan.
"Wow, Zisheng is quite the ladies' man."
"That's right, isn't this Miss Sun, the daughter of Magistrate Sun? Not bad, Zisheng, you should cherish this opportunity."
These people were unaware of the county magistrate's affair. They were extremely jealous that Jiang Xuan had caught Sun Qinwan's eye. They wished they had such good fortune, as they could have avoided many years of hard work.
However, Jiang Xuan only felt ashamed. He had a wife at home, and he had a very good relationship with her.
"No need, Miss Sun. Thank you for your kindness, but I really don't need it."
Sun Qinwan was heartbroken after being rejected. She felt that with her looks, there was no way Jiang Xuan wouldn't like her. The only reason was that Jiang Xuan had a wife. According to Granny Kong, that country woman was not even as good as her toes. Thinking of this, she became even more confident in herself.
“Young Master Jiang, I know you are not a heartless person, and neither am I, so I can make concessions on some matters.” She wanted to say that she could keep Jiang Xuan’s wife, but only as a concubine. If she was unwilling, she would have to be kicked out of the Jiang family.
Jiang Xuan didn't understand Sun Qinwan's meaning, but he could roughly guess it. He repeatedly refused, saying, "Miss Sun, I already have a family. Please respect yourself."
With that, he left. Sun Qinwan watched his retreating figure angrily: "Hmph, I don't believe I can't get rid of you. Even if you don't want to, with my father around, you wouldn't dare!"
When Sun Qinwan returned home in a huff, she found that the county magistrate's residence had been sealed off. Confused and unsure of what to do, she asked a passerby for the reason.
"You don't know yet? Magistrate Sun was killed by the imperial envoy sent by the court. Oh my, the scene was incredibly bloody. But this corrupt official did nothing but plunder the people and oppress them. It's good that he's dead!"
Granny Kong glanced at Sun Qinwan's pale face and chased the man away: "What are you saying? You'd be better off dead!"
The person looked completely bewildered, and finally assumed it was just bad luck and left.
Granny Kong looked at Sun Qinwan with concern: "Miss, don't be sad. Take advantage of the fact that no one has discovered us yet and run away quickly. Otherwise, if we get implicated, we won't be able to save Master, and even Miss herself will be in danger."
Sun Qinwan looked sadly at the sealed door and cried out, "Father, I'm late..."
Granny Kong quickly took Sun Qinwan to a secluded place, and the two headed towards the countryside.
"Miss, we can't go back to the magistrate's mansion. Where should we go now?"
Sun Qinwan stood there, looking confused for a moment, then suddenly said, "Let's go, let's go to the Jiang family!"
"The Jiang family?" Granny Kong asked疑惑地, "Why go to the Jiang family?"
"Go find Jiang Xuan. I don't believe he won't take care of me."
