Chapter Ninety-Nine: Jiang Xuan Returns Home
Jiang Mi was quite at ease leaving the matter to the village head. With Huo Ran also managing things behind the scenes, the drought should be resolved quickly, unlike in her previous life.
Huo Ran had to leave suddenly, and said goodbye to Jiang Mi before leaving.
The two looked at each other in silence. Jiang Mi now roughly knew that he was of high status. Although she didn't know why Huo Ran was here, they were destined to be worlds apart.
"I have some business to attend to and will be away for a while. But I will leave things here to my subordinates, so don't worry."
Jiang Mi had an inexplicable trust in Huo Ran; she believed he could handle this matter well.
"Okay, then be careful."
Huo Ran looked at Jiang Mi with lingering affection. This girl had become more and more beautiful and outstanding when he wasn't looking, and he was truly proud of her.
After watching Huo Ran leave, Jiang Mi felt empty inside. As soon as she got home, she saw Sun Qinwan appear at their house.
What are you doing here?
Logically speaking, since Magistrate Sun is dead, and Sun Qinwan, as his daughter, is no longer the magistrate's daughter, although she usually bullies others, she has never done anything illegal, so the government will not do anything to her. At most, they will arrest her and exile her or sell her to a brothel.
Sun Qinwan was also surprised to see Jiang Mi here, and she asked in a shocked tone, "What are you doing here?"
Jiang Mi said with a laugh, "This is my home. Where else would I be? What are you doing here?"
Sun Qinwan was shocked. She looked around the courtyard and asked Granny Kong with a doubtful expression, "Is this Jiang Xuan's house? Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
Before Granny Kong could answer her, Jiang Mi said, "That's right, this is my second brother's house, and Jiang Xuan is my second brother. You think you can marry my second brother? Dream on!"
Sun Qinwan was so angry that she gritted her teeth. She never expected to be so down on her luck and to be mocked by Jiang Mi. Thinking about how she had been taken advantage of by Jiang Mi twice before, she felt resentful.
Liang Lan had been feeling inferior because of Sun Qinwan's beauty and privileged background, but hearing Jiang Mi's words made her feel much better.
“Miss Sun, although I am not well-educated, I know about propriety and shame. You are, after all, the daughter of a county magistrate. Don’t you know that marriage requires the words of a matchmaker and the command of parents? You actually came to our house. You really have no shame.”
Sun Qinwan never expected that a village woman would dare to humiliate her like this. She went up and slapped Liang Lan. Liang Lan was stunned for a moment, then covered her face, at a loss for what to do.
Jiang Mi wasn't going to tolerate her. She shoved Sun Qinwan away and yelled, "You shameless bastard! You came to our house and started hitting people! What right do you have to lay a hand on my second sister-in-law? Who do you think you are?"
"I am the county magistrate..."
Sun Qinwan instinctively wanted to say that she was the county magistrate's daughter, but she suddenly remembered that her father had been killed and she was no longer the county magistrate's daughter.
What are you doing?
Jiang Xuan's voice suddenly came from outside, and he and Jiang Zhi appeared at the door.
Jiang Mi happily called out, "Second Brother, Third Brother!"
Before Jiang Mi could excitedly rush over, Sun Qinwan ran towards Jiang Xuan. Jiang Xuan frowned and dodged her movement.
"Miss Sun, what are you doing here?"
When Sun Qinwan saw her beloved, she began to cry: "Jiang Xuan, my father... my father had an accident, and I don't know where my mother went. I have nowhere to go now, so I had to ask around to get to your house."
Granny Kong wiped away her tears as well: "Now, the only person my young lady trusts the most is Young Master Jiang. She has nowhere to go. Young Master Jiang, please have pity on my young lady and take her in."
Jiang Xuan glanced at his sister and wife. They had returned because the county magistrate had been killed. The academy's teachers, fearing unrest in the town, had given them a holiday to go home for a few days.
"Don't you have any relatives?" Jiang Xuan and Sun Qinwan weren't familiar with each other, so he didn't dare to take her in rashly.
"I disagree!" Liang Lan suddenly shouted.
Jiang Mi looked at her second sister-in-law in surprise. In the past, Liang Lan was always timid and never raised her voice. She was also honest and obedient at home and never argued with anyone. She never expected her to become so determined at this moment!
"Jiang Xuan, if you take this woman in, then I'm leaving! It's either her or me, it's either her or me!"
Sun Qinwan glared at her fiercely, but in front of Jiang Xuan, she appeared weak and innocent.
“Young Master Jiang, it’s my fault. I didn’t want things to turn out like this. I’m just homeless. If it’s because of me that your family is in turmoil, then I should leave.”
Granny Kong glared at Jiang Xuan: "Young Master Jiang, don't forget that there was a young master surnamed Liu who was very wealthy and powerful. He almost squeezed you two brothers out of Wutong Academy. If it weren't for our young lady, you would be working in some field right now."
Sun Qinwan quickly stopped Granny Kong: "Granny, stop talking. I am no longer the county magistrate's daughter. If others don't want to remember my kindness, I don't need to force them."
The master and servant's back-and-forth banter left Jiang Xuan and Jiang Zhi looking quite embarrassed.
Jiang Mi had no idea there was such a thing going on. It seemed that her brother owed someone a favor. No wonder Sun Qinwan kept bothering Jiang Xuan!
“Sun Qinwan, putting everything else aside, you are now the daughter of a disgraced official. Do you think anyone would dare to take you in with your status?”
Sun Qinwan glared fiercely at Jiang Mi when Jiang Xuan couldn't see her, then complained to Jiang Xuan with a wronged expression: "What does my father's sins have to do with me? I didn't do those things."
Granny Kong also said, "Yes, my young lady is just a little spoiled, but she has never done anything immoral. My young lady is so innocent."
Seeing that Jiang Xuan was about to soften, Liang Lan threw the rag in her hand on the ground.
"Alright, I'll go then, okay? Jiang Xuan, you don't need to make things difficult for me. I know it wasn't easy for you to study. I'm a vulgar person, I can't even recognize a few words. I'm not good enough for you, but I have my pride. I won't be a concubine."
After saying that, Liang Lan strode out. Jiang Mi, seeing that something was wrong, quickly ran after her, calling out, "Second Sister-in-law, Second Sister-in-law..."
Jiang Xuan said helplessly, "When did I ever ask you to be my concubine?"
Unfortunately, Liang Lan had already gone far away and didn't hear Jiang Xuan's words at all.
Liang Lan and Jiang Mi walked one after the other. Jiang's mother and Jiang Cheng returned from the fields, looking bewildered: "What are these two doing?"
