Chapter 32 Deep Love Between Husband and Wife
Once we got to the second floor, it was much quieter.
Several private rooms were set up against the wall, while a few tables were placed in the center of the lobby, but there were hardly any people there. The waiter led them directly into a private room by the window. Although the room was not large, it was exquisitely furnished, and the window overlooked the main street, offering a view of many sights.
Just as Shang Ruyi was about to sit down, she heard Yuwen Ye say, "The same old three dishes, send them to the Yuwen residence."
The waiter replied smoothly, "Yes."
After they were seated, Yuwen Ye ordered a few more dishes. The waiter brought over some refreshing tea and a few plates of snacks before leaving.
The private room fell silent again for a moment.
Fortunately, because it was located on a main street, she could hear the sounds of traffic below. Shang Ruyi, being new to the place, leaned against the window and looked at the scenery. A short while later, she saw a person dressed in short clothes carrying a food box leave the restaurant and head towards the Yuwen residence.
She turned to Yuwen Ye and asked, "What did you send to the manor?"
Yuwen Ye took a sip of tea and said, "Snacks."
"to whom?"
"My mother."
"she--"
Shang Ruyi wanted to ask something more, but then felt that she was asking too much and might annoy him again. However, Yuwen Ye seemed willing to say more about his mother. He put down his teacup and said, "My mother's health is not good, and her appetite has always been poor. But she likes the tea snacks at Xianglaiju, though she can't eat too much. So every month, I come to order some for her."
"oh……"
Shang Ruyi nodded, and then she understood why he had taken the initiative to come over for dinner.
The two sat quietly for a while longer. After thinking for a moment, Shang Ruyi couldn't help but say, "I heard the official's wife—"
She paused before she finished speaking, and Yuwen Ye glanced at her as well.
She immediately changed her address, saying, "Mother..."
She said the word awkwardly, and Yuwen Ye seemed to find it awkward as well, so he could only stammer and continue, "She has coughed several times, it seems that her lungs are not in good condition. With such a condition, I'm afraid she can't overexert herself."
"..."
"The climate in Taiyuan is actually not suitable for health preservation."
Yuwen Ye looked at her: "You know about this?"
Shang Ruyi said, "When I was a child, I went on a diplomatic mission to the Turks with my father. There I met a shaman and learned some medical skills."
She rarely mentioned to anyone that she had studied medicine with a shaman, but somehow she blurted it out. She was worried that Yuwen Ye would show a disgusted expression, but he showed no sign of it and simply said, "I know too."
Shang Ruyi said, "Then—"
Yuwen Ye sighed and said, "Mother didn't want to be separated from Father. Even when she went to Shanxi to take up her post, she insisted on staying by Father's side."
"..."
Shang Ruyi was somewhat taken aback.
She had only met Guan Yunmu twice so far, and thought that her mother-in-law was a mild-mannered person who did not have any intimate interactions with her father-in-law. However, she did not expect that Guan Yunmu would disregard her own health in order to stay by her husband's side.
Shang Ruyi said softly, "They truly have a deep love for each other."
Upon hearing these four words, Yuwen Ye said nothing and turned to look out the window. Only then did Shang Ruyi suddenly realize that their marriage was nothing more than a transaction, and it was ironic that she was still admiring the deep affection between other couples.
Fortunately, the food was served shortly afterward.
When ordering, Yuwen Ye didn't ask her anything. Only when the dishes were served did he realize that there was a plate of roasted mutton, a bowl of mutton soup, and a plate of stew.
A strong smell of mutton hit her face, and Shang Ruyi immediately frowned.
Yuwen Ye picked up his chopsticks and said, "Please use them."
"..."
She silently picked up her chopsticks and reached for the stew.
