Chapter 31 Ascending to the Heavenly Palace to Pluck Golden Branches and Jade Leaves
Because of his military background, Yuwen Ye, though handsome, possessed a martial aura that surpassed the demeanor of any aristocratic scion. When he was a little angry, a fierce aura belonging to a martial artist would emanate from his body.
The small carriage immediately made it difficult to breathe.
But Shang Ruyi looked him straight in the eye without flinching and said solemnly, "Because this marriage is a transaction."
"..."
“Since we are the two parties in this transaction, you should treat me fairly. I am not your tool. You should discuss any plans or arrangements with me in advance, otherwise this deal will fail sooner or later.”
Before she could finish speaking, she saw Yuwen Ye narrow his eyes slightly, looking at her with a dangerous aura.
He said, "Shang Ruyi, tell me—is this fair?"
Shang Ruyi said, "Yes, it's fair."
"..."
"Trade must be fair."
Yuwen Ye didn't speak, he just stared at her.
His gaze was sharp and piercing, like a tangible blade, scraping Shang Ruyi's bones until they ached. But she did not back down; instead, she clenched her fists tightly where Yuwen Ye could not see.
My palms were covered in cold sweat.
After an unknown amount of time, a cold smile appeared on Yuwen Ye's face.
He said, "Shang Ruyi, you really surprised me."
Shang Ruyi paused for a moment, then said calmly, "We were strangers to begin with."
These two sentences were what they had said in their bridal chamber last night, and now they were repeating them verbatim. Yuwen Ye's eyes grew even colder, while Shang Ruyi remained calm and undisturbed.
The carriage continued to move forward relentlessly.
Those traveling with the train had no idea what unseen confrontation was taking place inside that seemingly calm carriage.

Taiyuan City wasn't very big. After the carriage had been traveling for a while, the outside gradually became more lively. Shang Ruyi turned her head and looked out through the gap in the curtain. There were more pedestrians passing by on both sides of the road, and shops began to appear on the roadside. The shouts of vendors rose and fell.
Shang Ruyi didn't know where they were going, and wanted to ask, but held back.
After a short while, the carriage stopped.
Yuwen Ye got out of the car first. Shang Ruyi stepped out of the carriage and was about to jump down when she saw him standing below, reaching out a hand to her.
Shang Ruyi was taken aback. Their conversation hadn't gone well, and she thought Yuwen Ye wouldn't talk to her anymore, but she hadn't expected this—
It seems he is still quite lucid.
Shang Ruyi didn't say anything, but reached out her hand, which Yuwen Ye grabbed and helped her out of the car.
Upon stopping, one sees a bustling three-story building called Xianglaiju. Inside the lobby on the first floor, many customers are drinking. A waiter is already waiting at the door, bowing and saying, "Young Master Yuwen, please come in."
Yuwen Ye led her inside.
Perhaps because they were regular customers, the waiter led them directly to the second floor. Along the way, many people glanced at them, clearly recognizing Yuwen Ye. In particular, several elegantly dressed young ladies who appeared to be wealthy and noble stared intently at Yuwen Ye.
However, when they saw Shang Ruyi, they all showed disdain.
One of them sneered and said in a voice that was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough to reach her ears, "Young Master Yuwen is really something. He could have gone to the Heavenly Palace to pluck a golden branch and a jade leaf, but he plucked a dog's tail grass instead."
Shang Ruyi glanced back and saw those people raising their chins, looking provocative.
She didn't say anything, turned around and followed Yuwen Ye upstairs.
A burst of laughter came from behind.
