“This is a letter from your father,” Madam Tao said.
She seemed to be using the letter to remind certain people that even though her husband wasn't around, he was still concerned about his son's marriage.
"Thank you, Mother, for granting my wish!"
Tao Yifan took the letter but didn't open it. He wasn't stupid; his mother's sudden change of heart clearly meant there was something wrong with the letter.
Madam Tao spoke again, "Don't you read your father's letter?"
"No rush."
"It must be an important letter." Madam Tao didn't know what Princess Qiya wrote in the letter, but she repeatedly told herself that as long as she delivered both letters to Tao Yifan, their engagement would be officially null and void from today onwards.
The thought of Chen Siyuan losing face makes her regain her lost dignity and pride.
"Getting married is a major life event, and it's normal for your father to be concerned. Your father is far away on the border, yet he still cares about your marriage. You must not hurt your father's feelings."
Tao Yifan had no choice but to open the letter. The moment he saw the contents, his expression changed instantly, and he turned to look at his mother.
Madam Tao glanced at it instantly. "What's wrong? What did your father say in the letter?"
Tao Yifan was disgusted that his mother had actually joined forces with Princess Qiya.
"My father blessed us in his letter, saying that he would definitely come back on the day of our wedding."
"How is that possible?" Madam Tao's voice rose to a shrill tone.
The sharp sound was jarring to those present.
When Zhang Ma saw that Madam Tao had lost her composure, she immediately glanced nervously at Tao Yifan. Sure enough, upon seeing that look in his eyes, she immediately lowered her head.
“I, Tao Yifan, swear a solemn oath before the Temple of the Old Man Under the Moon that I will only marry Chen Siyuan in this lifetime, or the Tao family will be wiped out.”
Madam Tao was furious.
Chen Zhaokun was stunned.
Is this kid crazy? How could he make such a vicious oath?
After a long while, Madam Tao was so angry that she couldn't speak anymore. She simply took out the second letter from her sleeve and slammed it on the table.
Tao Yifan glanced at it and smiled.
It's very cold and icy.
Ren Lu and Yu Shuo, who were standing to the side, awkwardly took a step back.
The young master is angry; this is not a good thing.
Tao Yifan's voice then turned somber.
Madam Tao gave a cold laugh and said, "This is the second letter your father has sent you."
Tao Yifan's hands trembled slightly.
The envelope was still blank. Tao Yifan knew that this letter was the key to the matter, and he also knew that the person who gave him the order today was his mother.
He never imagined it would be his own mother.
"Ha ha--"
That's ridiculous.
He actually managed to encounter this.
To stop herself, her mother had truly gone mad, even going so far as to associate herself with Princess Qiya.
Princess Qiya.
A princess from a different clan in the Shang Kingdom.
My mother has lived in the capital; doesn't she know just how bad Princess Qiya's reputation is?
Madam Tao was overjoyed that she had managed to extinguish her son's idea.
She knew it all along; she couldn't possibly have lost to her own son.
How is that possible?
He then turned to Chen Siyuan and asked, "Chen Siyuan, do you really want to marry my son?"
Tao Yifan hadn't even expressed his opinion yet, but Madam Tao couldn't wait to say this, which was quite obvious.
Madam Tao's words were too insulting.
Thinking that way seems incredibly shameless.
Chen Siyuan was not from an official family, but at least she was from a respectable family. Both families came to propose marriage in accordance with the marriage agreement, yet she was humiliated like this.
Even if you look down on someone, you shouldn't humiliate them like this, especially by coming to their home.
You have your own internal conflicts, resolve them yourselves first. Why bring it all this way?
Chen Siyuan's face turned pale, and her hands clenched into fists.
Humiliating oneself is acceptable, but humiliating the Chen family is not.
"Madam Tao, you can ask your son. If there's anything between you and your son, you can talk about it at home. It's not reasonable to go to someone else's house and spread rumors, is it?"
"You...you're so sharp-tongued! My son was bewitched by your seductive charm!"
"It seems your son lacks self-control?" Chen Siyuan's words were an indirect admission.
As a father, how could Chen Zhaokun remain silent? Tao Yifan had just helped him, and he absolutely could not tolerate anyone bullying his daughter.
"Butler Cheng, see the guests out!" This attitude was clearly more direct.
"Chen Zhaokun, what are you doing..." Madam Tao was startled by the voice beside her before she could finish her sentence.
Clang—
The chair that Tao Yifan was sitting on just now suddenly shattered into pieces, as if it had exploded.
Tao Yifan remained seated.
Everyone turned to look at Tao Yifan, whose face was deathly pale. He was clutching the letter tightly in his hand, his knuckles turning an unusual white from the force he was using.
His face was ashen, his thin lips were tightly pressed together, and his gaze fixed on the paper was as sharp as a knife.
He suddenly looked up at his mother beside him, his lips moved but he couldn't say a word.
His eyes held a mixture of pleading, anger, and disappointment.
The look in Madam Tao's eyes, however, was one of smugness.
She wanted to know what the letter said that had changed the expression of her son, whom she had always insisted on.
Chen Siyuan and Chen Zhaokun also noticed Tao Yifan's unease.
How could a mere letter cause Tao Yifan, who was used to seeing all sorts of things, to change his expression?
In their view, it seemed as if someone had grabbed Tao Yifan by the neck, making it difficult for him to even breathe.
Everyone stared at Tao Yifan. At first, Madam Tao was secretly pleased, but when she saw her son's expression, she realized something was wrong.
