Chapter 81

Chapter 81

In the Dingbei Marquis's Mansion, Lord Dingbei Fu Ping saw Wei Ling arriving in a sedan chair early in the morning and immediately welcomed him in.

Seeing Wei Ling's serious expression, Fu Ping assumed he was here to discuss something important. He dismissed his attendants and asked his trusted aides to guard the door. He also took out the Dahongpao tea his grandfather had saved and brewed a pot of tea for the Duke of Ying. Everything was ready. Then he asked him, "What are you here for? Tell me now."

Wei Ling glanced at him and said slowly, "I came here mainly to ask you for advice on how to better raise a girl."

Fu Ping nearly spit out his tea when he heard this. He was genuinely frightened by Wei Ling. "Why didn't you just say that... What's the point of asking?"

Wei Ling said, "I wanted to say it when I walked in, but you stopped me."

Fu Ping snorted, "Forget it, forget it. Since you're so confused, I won't bother to argue with you." He wiped his mouth and straightened his posture. "Don't you have an adopted daughter in your family... named Zhao Mingzhu? I remember she was brought to your house when she was little, and you raised her as a proper daughter."

Wei Ling sneered, "How could someone who was adopted to entertain the old lady be compared to Yi Ning!" He stroked the ring on his finger and said, "When the old lady marries her off soon, I'll give her a dowry. I'll do my best. When Yi Ning was brought back, I didn't want to keep her in the mansion, so as not to upset her. But the old lady has raised her for many years and has a deep affection for her, so I didn't touch her. It depends on whether she knows how to behave."

Fu Ping finally understood Wei Ling's attitude towards his adopted daughter. She didn't take him seriously at all.

I don’t know how many people in the aristocratic circle of the capital city really see it clearly, and whether Zhao Mingzhu has seen it clearly.

"What's there to ask about raising daughters?" Fu Ping was a little puzzled. "My three daughters are all taken care of by my wife. I buy them clothes and jewelry according to the seasons. I can just come and ask questions at any time." This is how everyone raises daughters. After all, men are the breadwinners outside the home and women are the homemakers. They shouldn't be confused.

"If you feel you can't raise her, why not marry a wife to help you?" Fu Ping said with a smile, "You've been fighting in Mongolia with Commander Lu for four years. It's time to get married."

Wei Ling doesn't want to get married now. Firstly, it's troublesome, and secondly, he is always afraid that if he marries someone, the girl will be too thoughtful and it will not be good for Yining.

He shook his head. "Let's not talk about this for now." Wei Ling paused and said hesitantly, "My girl is thirteen now, almost fourteen. Last time we were having dinner, I served her some food, but she didn't seem to like it very much. Girls are different from boys. I can beat Ting-ge, but I don't dare to lift a finger to a girl. I don't know how to get closer to her."

Wei Ling recalled that since he came back, Yining had never called him "Daddy".

Fu Ping frowned and repeated what his wife usually said, "Just ask about her homework every day, or take some time to eat with her - you must pamper her! My three daughters spend hundreds of taels of silver on cosmetics every year, and my wife has never been stingy with anything they like. I don't know anything else, but it's always right for you to be nice."

Wei Ling frowned as he listened, then slowly pulled out a small booklet from his pocket and dipped a brush in the tea. "Say it again, and I'll write it down."

Was this Wei Ling, the Duke of Ying, the Xuantong General who terrified the enemy on the battlefield? Fu Ping wanted to pull his face to get a closer look, lest he make a mistake.

Seeing that he didn't say anything, Wei Ling raised his eyebrows and said, "Why don't you say it?"

Fu Ping coughed, repeated what he had just said, and added a lot of exaggeration.

By the time Wei Ling was satisfied and let him go, it was already afternoon. Fu Ping watched him leave the house. With a daughter, the Duke of England seemed much more popular.

He went back to his room with a sigh.

Yining went to Wei Ling to wait for him, wanting to tell him about the pine branches and the green canal.

Wei Ling was a martial artist, and his study didn't contain many books, even entire sets that had rarely been opened. The two older maids who attended to Wei Ling made her tea and asked if she wanted a book to read. Yi Ning shook her head and said no. She walked over to Wei Ling's desk and found it somewhat messy.

Yining helped him pack up one by one, putting the pens back in the pen pile and rolling up the unused scrolls and inserting them into the porcelain jar.

One of the older maids seemed about to say something. Wei Ling hated having his desk cleaned, and rarely even allowed anyone into his study, so it was never cleaned. But the other maid quickly shook her arm, signaling her to be silent.

Yi Ning went to the back of the room and saw a letter on the desk.

There were only eight words on the letter: "Something unusual has happened in Jingmen, don't act rashly." The signature was a single character, Lu.

Yi Ning felt a slight chill run down her spine as she watched. The familiarity of the handwriting was so deep it penetrated her bones. It was the same handwriting on the Buddhist scriptures he'd copied for her to Old Lady Lu. It was the same handwriting on the bamboo painting she'd drawn. It was even the same handwriting on the betrothal gift slip he'd given her. At the time, she'd thought he'd written the betrothal gift slip himself, because he was so devoted to her.

But those long and interesting things are now just eight words on this piece of letter paper. Without any emotion, only indifference and concentration.

"Yining, are you here to see me?" Wei Ling had already returned from outside the study.

Yining took a book to cover the letter and let out a breath.

Lu Jiaxue… He always made her uneasy. Even the sight of his writing made her feel this way, let alone him in person. After all these years, the person Luo Yining couldn't forget the most from her past life was still Lu Jiaxue. She had clearly thought he truly loved her, but in the end, he was full of cold schemes everywhere.
