Chapter 3 Medicine Box
The box wasn't big, and it looked very old, as if it had been hit or dropped hard somewhere. It was uneven, and the paint was peeling off. If you didn't know better, you would think it was picked up from some garbage dump.
Yet, this small, shabby box evoked a profound sense of familiarity in Gu Jiao's heart.
Gu Jiao opened the box in a daze, only to see the medicine inside. Her mind went blank.
No way?
Her medicine kit!
How did it get here?
Am I dreaming?
Gu Jiao pinched herself; it really hurt! It wasn't a dream!
The box is real, and all the medicinal herbs inside are genuine!
Gu Jiao remembered that the first-aid kit was with her when the plane crashed. Could this be why it came here as well?
But... how did it get so dilapidated? Where's that blindingly flashy gold?
Gu Jiao used to think the medicine box was ugly when it was still shiny and golden, but now that it's tattered and broken, she thinks it's even uglier.
However, unable to resist the surge of affection welling up inside her, Gu Jiao couldn't help but hug the box tightly to her chest: "Sister will never think you're ugly again, sister will treat you well from now on!"
Gu Jiao carefully wiped the small medicine box clean. Fortunately, only the outside was broken; nothing inside was damaged.
Gu Jiao took some gauze and a bottle of iodine from her first-aid kit, disinfected the wound, and then applied an antibacterial ointment. She then took two anti-inflammatory pills, initially thinking she needed to bandage it, but later realized it wasn't necessary.
After treating her injuries, Gu Jiao felt a little hungry. She put the first-aid kit in the cabinet and planned to go to the kitchen to find something to eat. But before that, she needed to change into clean, dry clothes.
Gu Jiao hesitated for a moment, then walked through the main room and knocked on Xiao Liulang's door.
"What is it?"
Xiao Liulang's cold voice came from inside the room.
Gu Jiao said, "I want to borrow some clothes from you. The outer garments in the closet haven't been washed, so I have nothing to change into."
Xiao Liulang didn't respond for a long time. Just when Gu Jiao thought he wouldn't lend her the clothes, the door opened and Xiao Liulang handed her a dry long robe.
The long gown wasn't made of very good material, and the color was a bit faded, but it was very clean after being starched.
In her previous life, Gu Jiao would never have worn a man's clothes, but circumstances forced her to do so. If she didn't wear these, would she have to wear those moldy clothes in the closet?
After changing her clothes, Gu Jiao washed the dirty clothes and then went to the kitchen.
The kitchen was quite clean; Xiao Liulang must have cleaned it.
The rice jar was empty, but as Xiao Liulang said, there was still half a jar of cornmeal. In addition, Gu Jiao also found two eggs and a bunch of scallions in the cupboard.
Gu Jiao took out the eggs, made two cornmeal egg pancakes, sprinkled them with chopped green onions, and used the leftover batter to cook a small pot of cornmeal dumpling soup.
Gu Jiao brought the prepared food to the main room.
Xiao Liulang's door was ajar.
In his memory, the two of them always ate separately. Xiao Liulang would cook a meal and leave a bowl for the original owner in the pot, but the original owner would usually go to the Gu family's house to eat.
Gu Jiao paused for a moment, then knocked on Xiao Liulang's door.
"What's up?"
Xiao Liulang's cold voice came from inside the house.
Gu Jiao said, "I made dinner, would you like to eat together?"
Gu Jiao rarely cooks, and even if she does, she won't cook for him. So, he plans to wait for Gu Jiao to come out before cooking for himself.
Xiao Liulang looked at the tightly closed door with suspicion.
"I'll eat first if you don't want to." Gu Jiao wanted to wait for him, but she was so hungry that her stomach was practically sticking to her back, and she was just short of fainting on the spot.
She needs to replenish her strength as soon as possible.
Gu Jiao had just sat down and hadn't even picked up her chopsticks when the door creaked open.
Xiao Liulang came out.
Xiao Liulang didn't come here for a meal.
However, when his gaze inadvertently fell on Gu Jiao, he suddenly stopped.
When he gave Gu Jiao the long gown, he had given her one that he himself could no longer wear, but it was still too big for Gu Jiao. Her thin frame made the long gown look empty and somewhat clumsy.
Presumably to make it easier to work, she rolled up her hair and sleeves, revealing a section of her fair and slender neck, and her wrists were very thin.
Gone was his former arrogance and madness; he simply sat there quietly, earnestly eating what was in his bowl.
She doesn't even look like herself anymore.
Xiao Liulang's gaze paused slightly, but he ultimately looked away coldly.
At this moment, Gu Jiao noticed him and said to him, "You're here. Come sit down and eat."
There was another set of chopsticks and a bowl opposite Gu Jiao, showing that she hadn't just casually called out twice, but had actually made food for Xiao Liulang.
However, Xiao Liulang did not move.
Gu Jiao understood what he was worried about. The original owner of this body had a bad relationship with him, and suddenly making him food was quite suspicious. But Gu Jiao couldn't explain that she was no longer the same person she used to be.
After thinking for a moment, Gu Jiao said, "We don't have much firewood left at home. If we don't eat now, we'll have to waste firewood to heat up another meal later."
Whether it was these words that touched Xiao Liulang or not, he eventually sat down opposite her.
When the original owner first met Xiao Liulang, she was indeed amazed by his appearance; otherwise, she wouldn't have taken him in. To outsiders, the original owner's dislike for Xiao Liulang stemmed from his leg ailment, but Gu Jiao saw it differently.
The original owner was foolish, but Gu Jiao wasn't. There were some things the original owner couldn't see clearly, but Gu Jiao understood everything after going through her memories.
Xiao Liulang deliberately provoked the original owner of this body.
He did not want to consummate the marriage with the original owner of the body, nor did he want the original owner to be intimate with him.
Actually, that's perfect, she had the same idea too.
Despite her flirtatious remarks, she probably couldn't bring herself to actually do anything with him.
Gu Jiao quickly finished eating, took her bowl and chopsticks to the kitchen, and came out carrying a basket.
Xiao Liulang didn't ask her what she was going to do, and she didn't say either; this was always how things were between them.
But Gu Jiao turned around as she reached the door and said, "I wasn't lying to you earlier, the firewood is almost gone. I'm going to chop some more firewood before it gets dark. It might rain soon, so remember to bring in the clothes if I don't come back."
Xiao Liulang gave her a deep look.
In the past, Gu Jiao would neither notice the change in the weather nor explain her whereabouts.
After Gu Jiao left, only Xiao Liulang and a table of food that was neither edible nor palatable remained in the room.
The family was poor, and even if Xiao Liulang disliked Gu Jiao, he wouldn't go against the grain.
He frowned, picked up his chopsticks, and took a piece of scallion and egg pancake.
Updates have started! Is everyone still up and running?
