Chapter 23 Staring into the Eyes of a Snake

Marquis Zhongyi went on a drunken rampage in the middle of the night, loudly demanding a divorce.

Jiang Chengzong couldn't stop him at all; no matter how he tried to persuade him, it only made things worse.

Seeing his father's posture as if he was about to cause a major upheaval, Jiang Chengzong felt extremely regretful. He really wanted to slap himself. Just now, when Marquis Zhongyi accused Li Chunlan, he was just talking nonsense while drunk. Besides, he could have just stopped him, but instead he had to argue back.

This infuriated the old father, who felt utterly humiliated and that his dignity as the head of the family had been severely damaged. He was about to throw a tantrum like a wild bull.

"Young Master, someone from Shou Kang Garden is here to ask you something. What's all this commotion?" A servant boy rushed in and hurriedly announced.

Upon hearing this, Jiang Chengzong's heart leaped into his throat. Such a commotion had even woken Cen Shi from her sleep.

“Go and tell him it’s nothing serious. It’s just that the Marquis has had too much to drink and is talking about the war years ago. He’s also talking about some old comrades-in-arms, and he’s feeling sad and is crying his eyes out!” He immediately took over the conversation.

But as soon as he finished speaking, he aroused strong dissatisfaction from the Marquis of Loyalty and Righteousness.

"Bullshit! When have I ever cried? A real man sheds blood, not tears!"

"Go tell her to get dressed quickly. I want a divorce from her and we'll move out of the manor tonight. Let's see what she can do then—"

Taking advantage of his drunken state, Marquis Zhongyi began to spout nonsense again, but before he could finish speaking, Jiang Chengzong covered his mouth.

“Waaaaah—waaaaah—” Marquis Zhongyi struggled desperately.

Although he was old and could not compare to Jiang Chengzong's youth and strength, the drunkard was actually very strong and almost broke free.

While Jiang Chengzong was using all his strength to control him, he sent a servant to deliver a message: "Do as I say, keep him calm, and don't let a single word of what the Marquis said reach Shou Kang Yuan, or I'll skin you alive!"

"Yes, sir!" The servant, having received the order, dashed off in a flash.

After waiting a moment, Jiang Chengzong finally relaxed his strength. The moment Zhongyi Hou broke free, he was about to strike him.

"You unfilial son, you want to smother me to death! I'll beat you to death!"

The father and son immediately started gesturing. Seeing his father throwing drunken punches at him, Jiang Chengzong breathed a sigh of relief. Although the punches were always deliberately aimed at his face, at least he wasn't threatening divorce anymore.

He would rather be beaten than have his parents divorce.

But his relief didn't last long before the Marquis of Loyalty realized what was happening. He abruptly stopped, slapped his cheeks, and the sound of the slaps echoed.

"You've led me astray. Why bother with your nonsense? You still need to get a divorce from your mother. That's the important thing!" He said as he walked out, ignoring Jiang Chengzong's calls from behind. He was clearly determined.

Jiang Chengzong felt a chill run down his spine again. If he were to let him go on a drunken rampage and cause trouble for Madam Cen, Madam Cen would be furious and resentful. She would not only refuse to back down or compromise, but she would also disregard his drunken ramblings and would instead confront him head-on, determined to divorce him that very night.

Once the divorce papers are written and both parties have signed their names, there is truly no turning back.

We can't let him go!

Jiang Chengzong thought for a moment, then chased after his father and struck him on the back of the neck.

He used all his strength and held nothing back.

After all, the Marquis of Loyalty and Righteousness had practiced martial arts since childhood and was tough and resilient. He was afraid that if his strength was too weak, it would not be effective.

Fortunately, the blow was swift and accurate, successfully knocking out the drunken Marquis of Loyalty and Righteousness and preventing a midnight divorce scene.

Seeing her father lying unconscious on the ground, her face still contorted with curses, it was as if she could already hear the profanities escaping his lips.

Jiang Chengzong couldn't help but smile bitterly. If the Marquis of Loyalty and Righteousness were to regain his senses tomorrow, he would probably scold him for being unfilial again.

However, he certainly couldn't admit that drunkards have bad memories.

The next day, in front of the Marquis of Zhongyi's mansion, a spacious carriage slowly came to a stop. A slender young man jumped off first, then turned around, lifted the curtain, and helped a pretty young woman down.

"Jinyu, our elder brother told us to come back quickly. Mother must have been wronged. Let's go to Shou Kang Palace to see her as soon as possible," the thin young man suggested.

The girl refused and instructed the servants not to go to Shou Kang Yuan to spread the word.

"Young man, we're not in a hurry with Mother. I'd like to go and meet this third sister-in-law first. What makes her so capable that she makes Father and Mother act strangely every time they leave her courtyard?" The girl frowned, a hint of dissatisfaction on her face.

The boy clapped his hands suddenly, a playful smile appearing on his face.

"Yes, I forgot. I prepared a gift for this third sister-in-law beforehand. Time is short, so I have to meet her first, otherwise the gift will go crazy." As he said this, a hint of cunning and wickedness flashed in his eyes.

The girl pursed her lips, hesitatingly asking, "What kind of gift? It's not that thing you found yesterday, is it?"

"Yes, it's bright red, so pretty!"

"Can you stop being so disgusting? If you don't control it, that thing might backfire." The girl disagreed.

"If anything goes wrong, I'll take full responsibility, so don't worry about it, Yu-mei." The boy wouldn't listen to any advice.

***

On a rare sunny afternoon, the warm sunlight bathed everything in a golden glow.

Xu Wanying immediately had tables and chairs moved outside, and she leaned against them to bask in the sun.

Having not left the house for several days, I took advantage of the good weather today to sunbathe.

The warm sunlight felt wonderful on her skin, making her feel cozy all over. She covered her face with a round fan and gently closed her eyes, pretending to doze off.
