Chapter 6 The Mother-in-Law's Beloved

The system had confidently declared that the chubby boy would break the Sixth Prince's legs, and Xu Wanying had been waiting ever since.

If such a major incident had truly occurred, the Marquis of Zhongyi's mansion would have been in complete chaos long ago, but things have remained calm for the past few days.

The fact that she even had the leisure to serve tea today must mean something unexpected happened.

As expected, the system froze instantly, stammering and unable to speak for a long time.

"System, are you mute?" she demanded.

[Host, please rest assured, given the little fat boy's personality, it's inevitable that he'll cause enormous trouble; he can't escape the fate of becoming a eunuch in this lifetime.]

"Really? Then tell me, did he break the Sixth Prince's leg?"

The system fell silent.

Xu Wanying scoffed: "Heh, you took my energy, but you're spouting fake news to me. You have to compensate me with a real piece of gossip!"

[Host, this isn't my fault. Young Master Pan and the Sixth Prince had already clashed and were about to fight when you, his mother, sent the head guard to rescue the little fat boy and report it to the authorities, thus quelling the disturbance. However, the Sixth Prince already harbors resentment towards the little fat boy, and they'll inevitably clash sooner or later!] The system was also quite aggrieved.

Upon hearing the system's words, Marquis Zhongyi and Lady Cen exchanged a glance, both seeing a hint of solemnity on each other's faces.

This system is probably a magical artifact, as if it has opened a third eye. Even if they changed the course of events, it can still detect it.

The system said reluctantly, "Since she ruined everything, let's enjoy her drama first."

[When Lady Hou was a young woman, she had a sweetheart. The two met by chance under a peach tree at a temple and fell in love at first sight. They later met again in the rain; the scholar hadn't brought an umbrella, and Lady Hou had someone send him one. They also exchanged poems, and the scholar promised to marry her. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, they ultimately could not become a couple.]

When Cen heard that she was going to be talked about, her hair stood on end.

Everyone has secrets, including her. Moreover, being in the inner quarters of the household and the mistress of the Marquis's mansion, she must have many private matters to her name.

She never expected that the system would reveal not her ruthless nature, but her girlish secrets.

Cen was on tenterhooks; this was far more serious than any other private matter.

Meanwhile, the Marquis of Loyalty stared wide-eyed at Cen Shi with disbelief.

When the system said that Cen had someone he loved, he wasn't flustered at all. Who else could this person be but him? But when the second sentence came out, specifying that it was a scholar, he instantly tensed up and was on the verge of exploding.

Cen Shi naturally noticed the fiery gazes around her, but she didn't dare to meet their eyes, clearly feeling guilty.

She immediately spoke up, clearly trying to change the subject: "Wanying, are you satisfied with these wedding gifts? There are many more in the storeroom, Mother has prepared them all for you!"

Upon hearing this, Xu Wanying was overjoyed and felt even more energized.

She said politely, "As a daughter-in-law who has married into the Marquis's mansion, I should be filial to my parents-in-law and respect my elder brother and sister-in-law. Those things in the storeroom are not for a junior like me to enjoy. Please don't trouble yourself, Mother. I am humbled!"

Hearing her speak so pleasantly, Madam Cen felt comforted: "I cannot refuse the kindness of my elders. It pains me to see you break your head as soon as you entered the door."

As long as the system stops digging into her secrets, she can guarantee that she will send treasures to Qingxi Pavilion every few days.

Of course, this is something that can't be said outright; Xu Wanying has to figure it out for herself.

Unfortunately, Xu Wanying did not comply with her wishes at all. In fact, she was excitedly shouting in her heart: "[System, system, my emotions are surging right now! Just thinking about the gold and silver treasures that will soon fill the house makes me unable to control myself! Quick, continue to expose the secrets of Madam Hou. Who did my usually composed yet cunning mother-in-law like in her youth?]"

As fate would have it, Lady Cen's affections belonged to none other than Yu Jingxuan, the Minister of Rites and the sworn enemy of the Marquis of Zhongyi.

The system excitedly began to speak, but as soon as it uttered the name "Yu Jingxuan," the Marquis of Zhongyi could no longer sit still. He slammed his hand on the table, and with a loud "crack," one of the table legs shattered on the spot.

Then came a series of crashing sounds as teacups and fruit plates on the table fell to the ground, shards scattered everywhere.

The servants who were serving him knelt on the ground, and no one dared to utter a sound.

Xu Wanying looked over in shock: [What's going on! Why has the Marquis of Zhongyi suddenly gone mad? Could it be an epileptic seizure? Or rabies? These symptoms are in the late stages!]

"A bug just flew by, and I lost control of my strength," Marquis Zhongyi said, trying to save face.

Madam Cen remained silent, and the servants quickly stepped forward to tidy up the mess.

Wow, I never expected such a tough guy to be afraid of bugs. How much strength did he have to control himself to not scream? Tsk tsk.

[The system did not detect that the Marquis of Loyalty is afraid of insects. Where did the host get this conclusion?]

[It's obvious to the naked eye that the Marquis of Loyalty's fear of insects must be ingrained in his very bones; otherwise, a mere flick would have killed him, so why would he need to exert so much force? He has clearly transformed fear into strength.]

[A normal person would scream when they see something they're afraid of, but someone like him who prides himself on being a tough guy definitely can't scream, lest he lose his dignity.] Xu Wanying analyzed seriously.

Marquis Zhongyi's brows furrowed deeper and deeper. What kind of nonsense was this?

"Why are you all looking at me like that? I have been learning martial arts since I was a child, and I went to the battlefield when I was ten. I must do my best in everything I do. Even when facing the weakest enemy, I must put in my full strength. Only in this way can I remain invincible." He spoke in a grand and righteous manner, but in reality, he was saying it to Xu Wanying so that she would not smear him.
