Chapter 26 Doesn’t he want her anymore?
When An Zhi woke up, he found himself on an unfamiliar bed.
There were no shrill alarms, no roars of explosions.
Very quiet.
There was only an extremely low, even hum, like the breathing of some huge creature in sleep, coming from all directions.
She opened her eyes and her little hand subconsciously reached into her shirt pocket - the dagger was still there.
This made her feel a little relieved, but her heart still tightened.
Where is she?
Memory fragments flooded in:
Researcher Griffin's distorted face, Quinn's bottomless eyes, the deafening alarm, the collapsed wall, and the huge and ferocious sickle slashing down!
…
Looking around, the room was not big and was simple, almost cold.
The walls were smooth silver-grey metal, and there were no windows. The only light came from a soft overhead light recessed into the ceiling.
The bed was neatly made with sharp corners, and the sheets and thin blanket were dark gray, which was inconsistent with her white shirt.
This is not Quinn's stronghold, nor is it the street filled with blood and smoke.
Where is this place? Quinn said he would take her to a "safer and better place"...
Could this be it? But where's Quinn? Why isn't he here?
An Zhi's little face turned pale instantly.
She shrank into the innermost corner of the bed like a little animal left in a strange place.
Does he... also want her no longer like those people before?
At this moment, the hatch made an extremely slight unlocking sound and slid silently to the side to open a gap.
An Zhi held his breath and his body was as tense as a rock.
A familiar figure appeared at the door - Gu Jinyan.
He changed into casual clothes and held a tray with a glass of milk and a small plate of delicate-looking, sweet-smelling pastries on it.
Seeing An Zhi huddled in the corner like a frightened rabbit, staring at him warily, Gu Jinyan paused for a moment at the door.
Gu Jinyan did not approach immediately, but stopped a few steps away from the bed and gently placed the tray on a low table next to it.
"woke up?"
His voice was still cold, but he spoke slowly, as if he was afraid to startle a little bird. "How do you feel? Are you feeling unwell?"
He scanned her little face carefully, making sure there were no new scars.
An Zhi didn't answer, but just shrank his little body into the corner again, and his little hand holding the dagger tightened.
She recognized this older brother; it was he who took her away...
But, will Quinn still come?
Or do you really not want her anymore?
Thinking of this possibility, I couldn't hold back my tears any more. They rolled down my face and hit the grey bed sheet, staining it with dark dots.
She pouted and tried not to cry out loud, but her shoulders were shaking.
Gu Jinyan looked at her crying silently, full of grievance and anxiety, and frowned slightly.
He was not very good at dealing with crying children, especially this kind of silent crying that seemed to be abandoned by the whole world.
Gu Jinyan looked at her guarded posture and the obvious bulge in her pocket, and his eyes darkened.
He didn't try to touch her or ask her to put down the dagger, but simply pointed to the milk and pastries on the tray.
"Are you hungry? Drink some milk and eat something."
He paused and added, "It's safe here."
An Zhi did not answer.
Just then, another figure appeared at the open hatch.
Gu Changfeng leaned against the door frame, his posture very relaxed, his arms folded, and a gentle smile on his face that made people want to get close to him.
His gaze passed over Gu Jinyan's shoulder and slowly fell on An Zhi, with just the right amount of elder-like concern and curiosity.
"Hey, our little guest is awake?"
Gu Changfeng's voice was clear and pleasant, with a natural affinity, like a warm breeze that blew away the heavy low pressure in the cabin.
He seemed not to notice An Zhi's vigilance. His eyes glanced at the bed that Gu Jinyan had made, and then fell on An Zhi's plain inner wear. Then his smile deepened, and he looked at his son with a hint of ridicule:
"It seems that our brother Jinyan's preparations are... well, very personal."
He spoke in a casual tone as if he was talking about the weather.
Gu Jinyan had no expression on his face, but he just turned his body slightly to the side, separating An Zhi's sight from his father a little, forming a more protective posture.
"Oh, what's going on?"
Gu Changfeng seemed not to notice Gu Jinyan's embarrassment. His gaze lingered on An Zhi's tearful little face, and his tone was filled with just the right amount of surprise and a little bit of heartache.
"Why are you crying, little darling? Did you have a nightmare? Or..."
He deliberately dragged out his tone, his eyes sweeping across Gu Jinyan's expressionless face, "Are you scared by our brother who can't smile?"
Gu Jinyan: “…”
An Zhi paused in her sobbing, and her big tearful eyes timidly looked at the uncle at the door with a gentle smile.
Gu Changfeng walked in naturally, stopped beside Gu Jinyan, kept a certain distance, and did not approach An Zhi rashly.
He bent down slightly, trying to make his eyes level with An Zhi's, and smiled warmly and harmlessly:
"Don't be afraid, little one. Tell uncle why you are crying? Are you missing home? Or... can't find the person who brought you here?"
Mentioning this, An Zhi's tears fell even harder. Finally, with a heavy sob, she spoke with sobs, her voice small and sticky, full of helplessness and loss:
"Wow...Qui, Uncle Quinn...does he...does he not want me anymore? So he just left me here...is that right?"
She tugged at the corner of her clothes, her words filled with fear of being abandoned and deep loss.
Gu Jinyan and Gu Changfeng exchanged glances.
It seems that the person who took her away was called "Quinn".
But obviously, that person's promise was not fulfilled, or rather, it was interrupted by them.
The smile on Gu Changfeng's face remained unchanged, still gentle, and had a convincing soothing power:
"I see."
He sighed softly, his tone carrying just the right amount of understanding and a hint of exoneration for that Quinn.
"That uncle, he might have something very urgent to deal with, like suddenly having to save the world!"
He used an exaggerated tone to try to divert some of An Zhi's sadness.
"So, he had no choice but to temporarily entrust our child to the most reliable person to take care of him."
He pointed at Gu Jinyan beside him, and then pointed at himself:
"Here, this is the brother who looks very reliable," he deliberately ignored Gu Jinyan's blank expression, "and me, this relatively amiable uncle.
Before Uncle Quinn left, he told us repeatedly to take good care of you and take you to a safer and more comfortable place to wait for his return.
When he is done with his work, he will find a way to pick you up.
Are you okay with that?
