Chapter 10: Split the Family

“Knowledge is sacred, and keeping quiet in the place where it is disseminated is the most basic etiquette.”

Sun Ye’s words left Professor Liu stunned. This little girl really gave him many unexpected answers.

No one has ever said this, let alone when this high-level intellectual is the original sin.

"But nowadays, the higher the knowledge, the harder it is."

Professor Liu didn't find the conversation weird at all. After all, who would seriously discuss such an issue with a five or six-year-old kid?

The atmosphere in the town is indeed serious. The recent Red Guard movement is heating up and fermenting. Sister Sun Lan's school has been greatly affected. The teachers read from the textbook in class and dare not say a word more than necessary. It is very boring to study like this.

It's a minor thing for students to talk back to teachers and be disrespectful to them. What's really sad is that they will be reported by those with malicious intentions and making false accusations.

In this regard, Sun Ye can only think that this is the country's period of pain, and the future will definitely be bright.

"But knowledge is innocent; the guilty ones are the ugly ones."

Professor Liu was in a trance for a moment, as if thinking or confused. All this had nothing to do with Sun Ye.

"Thank you, little classmate. You helped me figure out some things." Professor Liu thanked him solemnly. He was going to go back and write a letter to his old friend.

"No need...thank you..." Before Sun Ye finished speaking, the man turned and walked away.

Weird people, weird questions, so weird!

Sun Ye ran around the playground to stretch his body. The classroom was too cold and he couldn't even breathe.

Just in time, after running a lap, the bell rang and the second class of the day began.

Teacher Li Qingqing was still teaching the class. This class was about teaching pinyin. She was still teaching the two classes back and forth and assigning homework. Teacher Li Qingqing sat outside, at the junction of the two classes, so she could just watch over both classes.

We have to raise the national flag after this class. This is a ritual that must be completed every Monday. Since school starts today, we don’t have to follow the rule of raising the national flag on Mondays.

The school principal is a veteran, but no one knows where Sun Ye was hired from.

The flag-raisers were two fourth-grade students, and the flag was held above their heads by four fifth-grade students, who walked in neat steps to the flag-raising area and handed it to the flag-raiser.

The whole process was solemn and dignified. Sun Ye looked straight ahead, watching the red flag rise little by little. As the red flag rose, the senior students sang loudly.

"Arise, ye people, who refuse to be slaves..."

Sun Ye, who knew nothing about China's modern history, felt an inexplicable surge of emotion in his heart and tears welled up in his eyes when he heard the song.

The red flag fluttered in the wind, and the principal reminded everyone to study hard and ended the flag-raising ceremony.

The team disbanded, but Sun Ye remained standing, looking at the red flag. She whispered softly, "China will overcome its difficulties, and this great nation will surely stand at the top of the world!"

"Ye Zi, what are you doing? I called you but you didn't respond. What are you looking at?" Sun Miao waved his hands in front of Sun Ye's eyes. Sun Ye was mumbling something and couldn't hear clearly.

Sun Ye came back to his senses, shook his head, and replied: "I didn't see anything. Let's go back to the classroom. It's cold here."

"Oh, you still feel cold? You stood there for a long time and couldn't be moved even if you called out." Sun Miao took Sun Ye's hand and trotted back to the classroom.

Before entering the classroom, Sun Ye looked back at the flag in the cold wind. Even though it was threatened by wind, frost, swords and knives, it never fell down.

After school at three o'clock, Sun Ye and his group went home and did their own work.

Sun Ye and Sun Miao carried backpacks and picked up sickles. These were the only two sickles in the family, and they were bought after raising pigs. A lot of effort went into making these two sickles.

The Sun family raised two pigs, one for handing over and the other for their own consumption. The children had to get the food for the pigs after school.

So Sun Ye and Sun Miao took on this task, after all, the meat was indeed delicious and not greasy.

"Leaf, where are we going to cut the leaves today?"

"Let me think about it. Let's go to the cornfield in the east. The pig grass there must be very good now."

"good."

"Ye Zi, at school, Tao Hua said she wanted to go with us to pick grass for pigs. Should we wait for her?"

Sun Miao tugged at Sun Ye's hand. She didn't know if Ye Zi would be angry for coming without saying hello. After all, she was still her elder sister, but it was more like Ye Zi was taking care of her and pampering her.

"OK."

Sun Ye doesn’t care, one more or one less person doesn’t matter.

"Taohua, hurry up, let's go!"

When Sun Miao saw Taohua coming, he waved to her hurriedly. Taohua was the daughter of his third uncle from the next room in the village. She was thin and petite, and the basket on her back made her look even smaller.

"Then, let's go!"

Sun Miao rushed out first, and carrying the basket did not affect her flexibility at all.

Taohua looked at Sun Ye timidly and didn't dare to leave first. Seeing that she was really scared, Sun Ye left first.

She wasn't actually scary, and she thought she looked pretty, so why would Taohua be afraid of her? I couldn't figure it out.

"Wow, Ye Zi, we've made a fortune! All this pig grass is ours."

When Sun Miao arrived at the place and saw the grass, her heart was filled with joy. The grass was so abundant and tender that pigs would surely like it. Not to mention the pigs, she even wanted to eat it just by looking at it.

Sun Ye always has mysterious abilities. You will never lose out if you go with her to pick grass for pigs. Her positioning is extremely accurate.

"This is the kingdom I built for you. This whole piece belongs to us!"

Sun Ye rarely said a witty remark, and Sun Miao followed up, "Hey, my dears, I'm here. Wait for me to take you home."

Seeing the good relationship between the two sisters Sun and Ye, Taohua unconsciously revealed an envious look. She also had sisters in her family, but they disliked each other and were always at odds with each other. She lost more than she won. It was all because her grandmother favored one of them.

The three of them moved very quickly. After a while, the backpack was so full that it was almost bursting with moisture. If they hadn't been worried about not being able to carry it back, they would have been able to cut a little more.

When she returned to the doorstep, Taohua said thank you, thanking them for taking her to cut grass for the pigs. Her peers in the village were all attracted by Lihua, her uncle's daughter, and were not allowed to play with her. She didn't want to play with them.

"It's okay, it's nothing."

After Sun Ye said this, he saw Taohua seemed relieved, then he slowly picked up the pig feed and walked back home.

After putting the pig feed away, it was time for Sun Ye to do her homework. In fact, Teacher Li Qingqing did not assign any homework. Sun Ye did it to consolidate what she had just learned, and she took it as a guiding principle to review what she had learned in order to gain new knowledge.

Sun Ye found the words in the book quite interesting, concise and to the point.

I only learned this sentence when I heard my second brother read it. I was shocked. She had lived for thousands of years and had never come up with such insightful words.

When Sun Miao saw Sun Ye started to write and recite again, her head started to hurt again. It had been a whole day, and this was not the way to study. She couldn't stand it anymore, so she quietly slipped out of the door to find her mother in the fields to ask for praise. She did a great job and cut a lot of pig grass.

Sun Ye didn't force Sun Miao to be with her. She felt more at ease being alone. She opened the book, which was an old one.

There were some writings and drawings on it, but the handwriting was still legible. She was literate and pestered her second brother to teach her. In order to save face, her second brother forced himself to move from the last place to the upper-middle level, which made it difficult for Second Brother Sun.

Today it was the eldest wife's turn to cook, and Mrs. Sun got off work early. As soon as she entered the house, she saw Sun Ye leaning against the window reading a book.

Two little buns were firmly fixed on her head, her black and silky hair hung down, and she was so focused that Mrs. Sun felt embarrassed to disturb her and walked past her lightly.

After reading a text, Sun Ye breathed a sigh of relief. The human race really cannot be underestimated. There is a reason why they have grown so strong.

She rubbed her eyes and closed them. After a while, she walked to the door of the kitchen and asked, "Auntie, let me light the fire!"

Mrs. Sun nodded and said, "Be careful, or you might burn your hair."

"Okay, I know."

I went to the utility room and got some chopped firewood, then put it into the stove one by one. The fire slowly started, and I sat on a small stool and ignited the stove from time to time.

"Ye Zi is really hardworking. Unlike your brother Wu, he disappears as soon as school is over, and then pops up again at dinner time."

"No."

"Brother Xiaowu is quite obedient!"

Sun Ye really didn't know what to say. She was not a talkative person. But it was also strange that her two brothers would eat at mealtimes by themselves. It was a special skill of the human race!

She shook her head and decided not to think about it anymore. She focused on burning her fire peacefully. Fire was the most important thing at the moment.

The meal was still low in oil and salt. Sun Ye was already worried about when he would be able to have the feast. He counted on his fingers and couldn't help feeling a little desperate.

She wanted to eat meat very badly!

Mrs. Sun prepared the meal and Old Lady Sun and the others had finished work. Old Lady Sun entered the kitchen with a piece of meat in her hand. It was smoked during the Chinese New Year and was only taken out to eat during festivals or when guests came to the house.

Today is not a festival. Sun Ye looked in the yard again. There were no guests. Why did grandma cook meat?

"Grandma, are we eating meat today?"

Sun Ye was really curious and couldn't help but ask.

"I have something to do today!"

Seeing that grandma didn't want to say more and didn't look very happy, Sun Ye didn't ask any more questions, thinking that he would find out eventually.

"Grandma, smile. I learned a lot of words today. Do you want me to show you how to read them?"

Apart from his parents, his grandmother loved him the most in the family. Sun Ye didn't want Grandma Sun to be unhappy, so he made jokes to make her laugh.

"Ye Zi is awesome! Try to go to high school like Lani!"

"Guaranteed to complete the mission!"

Sun Ye's answer was unusually loud. When Old Lady Sun heard it, she forced a smile and sent Sun Ye out to play.

It seems like a big deal.

Sun Ye looked at his parents but didn't find any signs. It was really worrying.

The meat was cooked and served on the table, and the boys in the family became excited.

Old Man Sun tapped the table with his pipe, took a puff, and then exhaled. The smoke made it impossible to see Old Man Sun's expression, only his voice could be heard:

"My grandchildren are all grown up now. As the saying goes, a tall tree has many branches. This family..."

"Let's split up."

The air was silent for a while.

The heads of each family said, "Dad, we four brothers are doing well, there is no need to divide the family."

"Dad, as long as our parents are still together, tell me what we did wrong."

"Dad, we don't agree to split up the family."

The daughters-in-law didn't say anything.

"It's my house, I want to divide it up, so don't waste your time on it."

Old man Sun was also feeling bad, but seeing that his grandson was old enough to get married and the family didn't even have a decent house, he thought it was time to separate the people and let each family take care of their own house. The old couple had worked hard for half their lives and it was time for them to enjoy a peaceful life.

"After the family splits up, your mother and I will live with the eldest son in the family. Boss, is that okay with the eldest son's wife?"

"Dad, no problem."

"As for the other three houses, I've already picked out the land for the homestead. You can decide when to build the house."

"Tomorrow I'll ask the team leader to come over as a witness, and divide the family up first."

The old man said a lot in one breath, explaining almost everything he needed to say, and then started eating.

Sun Ye was stunned when he heard about dividing the family. Why would his grandfather think of dividing the family?

No wonder grandma was unhappy. Grandma and dad were also confused and obviously unaware of the situation.

Although there was meat in this meal, it was tasteless and everyone was absent-minded.

This night, every room was destined to be restless.
