Chapter 2: Celebrating the New Year

Seeing this, Wang Xiuzhen felt that it was her own child who felt sorry for her, and her eyes were filled with love. Then she looked at Sun Xuejun who was still lying dead on the bed, and she was so angry that she reached out and twisted his arm, and then she felt relieved.

"What's wrong?" Sun Xuejun turned over and sat up without opening his eyes.

"What's wrong? Your daughter is hungry. I don't have enough milk. Go get her something to eat." Seeing Sun Xuejun's sleepy eyes, Wang Xiuzhen felt distressed again and her tone softened a little.

"Okay, I'll go see if there's anything to eat."

Sun Xuejun didn't mean what he said at all. There was no food at home, and everything that could be eaten was almost gone.

"Third brother, there is a bowl of porridge in the kitchen, please take it there."

It turned out that Old Mrs. Sun got up early in the morning to cook porridge. With the addition of a new member to the family, she had to share the food evenly no matter how reluctant she was. The adults wouldn't die from starvation, but the newborn baby couldn't.

She saw at a glance that this year would be a good year. There would be plenty of snow water and the ground would be soaked, so there would definitely be no drought. The farmers worked hard in the fields, fearing that there would be no harvest.

The old man's complexion has improved a lot. He patrols every day and walks more briskly.

The whole family survived the three-year drought together. Don’t let it fail on the eve of the harvest, that would be a joke.

The fourth son's family came to take away the food early in the morning, but the third son was so slow to open the door at this time. I wonder if his granddaughter is hungry.

Thinking of this, without waiting for the wood to react, Old Lady Sun walked straight past Sun Xuejun and went into the house.

The Sun family has a large courtyard, the kind of farmhouse-style courtyard with the main hall in the middle. Old Mrs. Sun and Old Man Sun live in the room behind the main hall. There are two rooms on each side of the main hall, and a kitchen on the left side of the courtyard. Next to the kitchen is a room where various sundries are stored.

There is a pigpen built on the left side behind the yard. There are no pigs in it, and people have nothing to eat, let alone raise pigs. So the pigpen is empty. There is an open field on the right side of the yard where some vegetables are planted, but they are sparse and half-alive.

Ola ate the rice soup mouthful by mouthful. There were only a few grains of rice, which were cooked into a mushy paste and blended into the soup. At least the rice soup looked like it had some color, but it was pale.

When Old Lady Sun saw Wang Xiuzhen had finished feeding Dibo, she sighed and said, "This kid eats well, unlike the one from the fourth child's family, who is so hungry. How can there be such a big difference between kids who have only been fed for two days?"

Aura listened, understanding what was being said. She was startled. Was she behaving abnormally? Had she eaten too much?

"Hey, let's not talk about this. What are you going to name this baby? You can't keep it without a name forever."

Old Mrs. Sun did not interfere with the names of her descendants. After all, she had spent a lot of time thinking about the name of her own child.

"Mom, I was originally planning to name her Sun Mu, but it doesn't sound nice for a girl, so let's call her Sun Ye."

"Okay, then Sun Ye, Ye Zi, a cheap life is easy to support."

Ola, no, now she is Sun Ye, and she officially has her own name. She also knows that there is a human cub who is two days older than her. Whatever she does in the future, she will use that cub as a reference to ensure that no one will discover her.

The voices in the house woke up Sun Sen and Sun Lin. Sun Sen hurriedly put on his clothes and ran to see his sister. Seeing that his sister had not grown up yet, he asked, "Grandma, when will my sister grow up?"

"Oh, three more years."

Following behind him was Sun Lin, who was pulling at the sheets with his little hands and trying to climb onto the bed. He accidentally rubbed a big hole in his patched clothes, revealing the yellowed and dry cotton inside.

Wang Xiuzhen glanced at Sun Lin lightly, pretending to be dissatisfied.

Sun Lin didn't dare to move. Old Mrs. Sun picked up Sun Lin and asked him to look at his sister.

"Look at you, what are you crawling for? Your clothes are torn. Look at what you wear. Your clothes are not enough to cause trouble."

"Milk~"

"Okay, I'll sew it up for you. Don't damage it again. It's just a waste."

After the clothes were sewn, Sun Sen and Sun Lin lost interest in the little sister and hurried out to play.

The men ate a light meal at noon and then went to work in the fields.

Sun Ye just ate and slept all day long, and sometimes he would visit the fourth room.

As time went by, Sun Ye looked like a steamed bun made of fermented dough, changing every day. Everyone who saw him said that he was well-nourished, but in fact he was still skinny. It was good enough that he could stand, and no one expected anything more from him.

That day, Wang Xiuzhen brought Sun Ye to the main hall. Sun Miao, the daughter of the fourth son Sun Jijun, was also there, so they brought the two babies together.

Wang Xiuzhen and Old Lady Sun worked together to weave straw sandals and mend clothes.

Seeing that his mother had gone to busy herself, Sun Ye turned around and looked at Sun Miao who was lying next to him.

Sun Miao next to her was dancing with his hands and feet drooling. Seeing this, Sun Ye also started waving her hands and feet. As for drooling, she hadn't made such an indecent gesture in thousands of years.

Wang Xiuzhen looked over here from time to time and couldn't help but say, "This child is more active and energetic when playing with other children. Ye Zi is too well-behaved. Apart from eating, pooping and peeing, he just lies there and doesn't move."

Upon hearing this, Zhang Xiuying, Sun Jijun's wife, couldn't help but say, "Third sister-in-law, Ye Zi is easy to take care of, and adults are comfortable too. Unlike my child, she's a little devil. When she cries, my scalp tingles. She cries all night long. I wish I could stuff her back into my stomach."

Although Zhang Xiuying said this, the smile on her face remained unchanged, and her eyes were as gentle as dripping water when she looked at Sun Miao.

"It's all the same. All babies are like this. When they grow up, they become even more noisy."

"I hope Miao'er can be as capable as Lanny so I don't have to worry about her anymore."

For a moment, the main room was filled with various voices praising the children.

"Mom, Chinese New Year is only three days away. I won't be going to your parents' house this year. Ye Zi is still young and I'm afraid she'll get cold on the road."

Speaking of this, the joyful atmosphere froze.

It's not that she doesn't want to go back to her parents' home. Wang Xiuzhen's eyes were slightly red as she looked at Sun Ye. If she went back, she would have to add food to the family of four, which was too difficult. She hadn't been back for three years.

The other sisters-in-law looked at each other, glanced away, and said that they would not go back to their parents' home. Only the eldest wife's family was in the same team, so they could go back and visit nearby.

Old Mrs. Sun looked up and was silent for a while.

"Then let's spend this year at home."

Old Mrs. Sun also lost interest. She put the clothes aside and went back to the house to look at the jar. There was a shallow layer of rice grains at the bottom, and the ground was barely visible. She brushed it with her rough hands. This was the rice she had saved by being frugal.

She silently calculated how much food she could still eat. This year had to be a good year, otherwise, the whole family...

Sun Ye was not affected and continued to move his hands and feet with an extremely calm expression.

evening.

Sun Ye listened to the private conversation between Wang Xiuzhen and Sun Xuejun.

"Xiuzhen, here, I dug deep in the sweet potato field today and found this."

Sun Xuejun took out a sweet potato as big as a hoe from his pocket with a silly smile on his face.

"You are amazing, where are the big brother and the others?"

"I saw their pockets were bulging, so I thought they might have some too."

"I gave a few to my mother, and I saved the biggest one on purpose."

Wang Xiuzhen took the sweet potato and put it under the head of the bed, where there were snacks of all sizes hidden, including sweet potatoes, potatoes, peanuts, and chestnuts as thin as little fingers, all of which they were secretly searching for.

When the children were hungry, they would secretly take some out. Every room had a little, and everyone knew it tacitly. Even Old Mrs. Sun knew it.

"There's been enough snow, so I think next year will be a good year. There are actually sweet potatoes underground. I remember digging through them, but I didn't expect to find some leftovers. They're sprouting, so great."

Sun Xuejun leaned against the head of the bed. Wang Xiuzhen nodded and relaxed Sun Xuejun's shoulders.

"You're lucky. Go check it out tomorrow."

Sun Ye glanced at the couple leaning together and turned away.

The food here is so poor? But what does this have to do with me?

She should just go to sleep.

When I closed my eyes, what kept appearing in my mind was the joyful expression on my mother's face when she took the sweet potato. It was just a low-grade crop, and she would not even look at it before.

I silently recited the meditation technique in my heart, and sure enough, the thing that affected my emotions disappeared.

Sun Ye found that today was particularly lively. Her two brothers got up before dawn and were so excited that they did not go out to play that day.

What's more, everyone was in high spirits, and even the grandfather who usually had a sullen face would crack a smile.

After cleaning, the whole house looked brand new, and a group of children were running around without being scolded or beaten.

The food was also exceptionally good, with a plate of fried radish and a large pot of stewed potatoes.

Each person had a bowl of sweet potato rice, which was not as watery as usual. Several greedy kids had already gathered at the table and refused to move.

We ate at two tables, waiting for the old man to speak and start eating.

Sun Ye was held by Wang Xiuzhen and looked at the old man. Old man Sun put down his pipe and coughed to clear his throat:

"I hope that the coming year will be blessed with good weather, full granaries, and full water tanks, and that my family will live in peace and safety."

He stopped talking, looked around at everyone who was waiting eagerly, and without saying much, reached out to pick up a potato with chopsticks, put it in his mouth to chew, and nodded.

In an instant, chopsticks were flying on the table, and Sun Ye also learned what it meant to be slow to act.

After the meal, everyone lined up from youngest to oldest. Sun Ye was the youngest and the first one to stand. Wang Xiuzhen held him in her arms and said auspicious words. Old Mrs. Sun took out a red paper package from her pocket and put it into Sun Ye's pocket.

The second Sun Miao from the fourth room did the same thing.

There were nine children in total, both boys and girls, and each cost one cent.

Those who got the money would disperse in a hurry, and they didn't want to be held back by their mothers. They had to hand over the money, under the pretext that they would save it and give it to them later.

A few of the younger ones believed it and handed it in.

How naive! Of course, things belong to you only when you hold them in your own hands, Sun Ye thought. She will keep them by herself in the future.

Perhaps Sun Ye herself did not realize that she had already considered herself a member of this family.

As the weather grew warmer, the blanket wrapping Sun Ye gradually faded.

Today is the tenth day of the lunar month.

Wang Xiuzhen carried Sun Ye on her back and was busy running around every day. She first loosened the soil in her own land. She had to start spring plowing immediately at this time, otherwise she would have no time to do it later.

Wang Xiuzhen put Sun Ye at the edge of the field, and let Sun Ye and Sun Miao sit together. She picked up a wooden hoe and started working. The iron hoes had been handed over during the Great Steel Production Campaign a few years ago.

Sun Ye found a comfortable position and lay down, ignoring Sun Miao. He listened to the baby's babbling in his ears and looked up at the deep blue sky in a trance.

She struggled to move her chubby hands, pressing them close to the ground to feel the air around her.

The place was very desolate and filled with dust, which made her feel a little upset. There was little green, and the little that did grow was dug up and eaten.

There were bursts of joyful sounds coming from underground, and it wanted to have close contact with Sun Ye, but it did not have enough nutrition and did not have the strength to push up the soil above its head.

Sun Ye tried to increase her efforts, but it was all in vain. She could only vaguely understand the thoughts of these plants and could not help them grow quickly.

She raised her hand and placed it in front of her eyes. It was white and tender. She was really not the elf high priestess she used to be. These abilities were the best the mother tree could leave for her. The fountain of life had transformed her body.

Sun Ye looked at his mother who was bending over to work in front of him. She was sweating in the cold weather, and mud was all over her trouser legs. But she was still chatting and laughing with her fourth aunt.

I can’t figure it out, the human race is really interesting.

My mother told me that the land has been plowed and we just need to plant the seeds. We have to go to the grain station to get these seeds because the seeds at home have been eaten up long ago.

Sun Ye lived a life of working in the fields in the morning and picking wild vegetables at the foot of the mountain in the afternoon.
