Chapter 37 Her People...
Dinner was eaten together.
Perhaps because they had opened up to each other, an indescribable intimacy filled the two of them, a harmony so perfect that no third person could possibly intrude.
Yan Yize sat quietly with her eyes lowered, her long eyelashes trembling slightly, as if she was thinking about something difficult. After a long while, she raised her eyes, curled her fingers slightly, and a glint flashed in her eyes, as if she had made up her mind.
"Shang Xu," Yan Yize called softly, coughing lightly while covering her mouth with her fist. She looked at him, her eyes flickering, a blush creeping up behind her ears like the rising moon. After hesitating for a moment, she asked softly, "It's still early, shall we go for a walk?"
After Yan Yize finished speaking, his dark eyes were calm, like a river flowing quietly under the moonlight, without a ripple. It was as if what he had just said was just a casual remark, but the blush behind his ears was undeniable.
Upon hearing this, Shang Xu's heart skipped a beat, his little finger trembled unconsciously, and then fireworks seemed to burst forth in the depths of his eyes, emitting a bright brilliance. He was overjoyed at the invitation of his beloved, so how could he refuse?
His lips couldn't help but curve upwards. He had gone to great lengths to avoid losing his composure in front of her. Suppressing his inner elation, Shang Xu forced a calm smile and nodded in agreement, "Okay."
——
The thick snow on the streets had not yet melted, and the cold wind that blew from time to time made people shiver. But even so, it could not stop people's enthusiasm for the New Year. The crowds on the long streets could not be seen at all, and the shouts and calls of vendors made it very lively.
Yan Yize and Shang Xu also joined in.
Originally, there was a distance between the two people, but there were so many pedestrians coming and going that they inevitably pushed and shoved each other as they walked. Before they knew it, the distance disappeared, and the two were forced to stand close together.
The familiar fragrance filled his nostrils, and Shang Xu couldn't help but blush. The friction of his clothes against his skin made his heart pound wildly, like a deer's.
He couldn't help but look up, wanting to know how she felt. What about her? Would she feel the same way he did?
Or do you hate it?
When Shang Xu saw her cool and beautiful profile, he blushed and his heart raced again. The affection in his eyes was about to overflow uncontrollably, but he was afraid of seeing her displeasure, so he could only desperately suppress the surging emotions.
Shang Xu secretly looked up for a long time, until his eyes were a little sore, but all he saw was the same calm as always, as calm as a windless lake. He couldn't help but feel disappointed, because he was the only one who was thrown into chaos by a single touch.
What's even more heartbreaking is that he had nowhere to confide in about the chaos and turmoil of war.
Yan Yize had noticed his peeping long ago. She wanted to pretend she didn't know, but he had been watching for so long that she felt a little awkward. If he continued to watch, she was afraid that she would end up in an embarrassing situation where she moved her hands and feet in unison. So she had no choice but to interrupt him.
She tilted her head, her eyes showing just the right amount of concern. "What's wrong?"
Shang Xu composed himself, stopped daydreaming, and shook his head at her with a smile, saying, "It's nothing."
Yan Yize stared at him for a few seconds, her brows furrowing almost imperceptibly. She wanted to ask again, but after moving her lips, she didn't speak. He had his reasons for not wanting to say, and if she pressed him further, it would seem that she was being unreasonable.
So he had no choice but to give up on the idea.
"Hmm." Yan Yize responded in a muffled voice, her expression unreadable, but she was still bothered by his avoidance of the question. She couldn't help but start to reflect on what she had done wrong that made him unwilling to speak to her.
As she looked away, she subtly glanced at the two people's bodies pressed tightly together, her eyes flickering like shimmering spring water, but she made no move to look away.
That one glance betrayed that she was not as calm as she appeared.
Each with their own thoughts, they tacitly chose to forget this incident and continued forward with the surging crowd.
It was during the holiday season, and the street vendors had all sorts of amazing things to offer, from talking parrots to acrobatic monkeys, which were quite interesting. Before long, the two of them were drawn to them.
They walked for a long time.
Suddenly, someone at the front of the crowd shouted.
Because of the distance and the noise of the crowd, Yan Yize and Shang Xu could not hear clearly what was being shouted, only vaguely hearing something about some kind of immortal.
The two bewildered individuals instinctively looked at each other, their eyes filled with the same confusion. Before they could react, the calm crowd suddenly became restless, like mad monkeys, pushing and shoving forward recklessly, completely disregarding their own safety.
Out of concern for their safety, they had no choice but to follow the crowd. Their eyes were fixed ahead, and they were completely unaware that someone was watching them from behind.
Behind them stood a gaunt, ugly man with a scar running from his eye to his mouth across his entire face. He was glaring at Shang Xu, muttering, "Why do you get such a beautiful wife?"
"Why is it that nobody wants me?"
"It's not fair, it's not fair."
The man had been following them all the way, his resentment almost palpable. Why did God have to give him such an ugly face? He hadn't intended to do anything, but the sudden commotion in the crowd stirred up evil thoughts in him.
The man stared maliciously at Shang Xu's flawless face, then suddenly smiled wickedly, quickly reached out, and shoved Shang Xu hard without hesitation, "You bitch, die."
Caught off guard, Shang Xu stumbled and fell forward uncontrollably.
The sudden turn of events terrified him; with so many people behind him, he could already foresee the consequences of falling here.
Shang Xu struggled desperately to stop himself from falling, but no matter how hard he tried, it was to no avail. As he got closer and closer to the ground, his lips turned white, but no matter how unwilling he was, he could only close his eyes helplessly.
At the critical moment, Yan Yize swiftly pulled the person into his arms. Her face darkened, and she quickly turned around.
As Shang Xu collapsed, the hand that pushed him didn't have time to retract in time. She saw it and naturally wanted to find the person who hurt him and get justice for him.
The man was very sorry to see that Shang Xu hadn't fallen. His eyes were filled with malice and dissatisfaction. He thought that such a despicable thing who used his looks to seduce people should be trampled to death.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp gaze. The man turned his head and met Yan Yize's cold gaze, which seemed to turn into sharp arrows that would pierce his heart.
The man shuddered in fright, and without thinking, he plunged into the crowd and disappeared.
Yan Yize remained silent, merely watching coldly, firmly imprinting the man's ugly face in her mind. He could run for a while, but not forever; the person who pushed her would naturally pay the price.
