Chapter 47 Desolation: Two people separated by a door, both feeling desolate.
Yan Yize stood at the fork in the road, her brows furrowed, her eyes unfathomable, as if she were pondering something important. After a long while, she sighed in resignation, abandoned the original path, and instead took the road leading to Shangxu Courtyard.
After returning, Shang Xu locked himself in his room. He was staring blankly at the sachet in his hand, his pale lips and red eyes testifying to his sorrow.
Unexpectedly, a crystal tear rolled down his porcelain-white face, down his chin, and onto the sachet in his hand, the water stain spreading and wetting a patch of the goose's wing.
Just as he was deeply immersed in grief, a series of orderly knocks echoed through the quiet space.
Shang Xu hurriedly stuffed the sachet into his pocket; it was his secret, and he didn't want anyone to find out yet. He then hastily wiped away the tears on his face.
After confirming that everything was correct, he finally spoke, "What is it?"
He didn't believe Yan Yize would come here, so he naturally blamed the knocking on the servants.
Even though he had hidden the sachet and wiped away his tears, and tried his best to speak as if nothing was wrong, his voice still carried a hint of sobbing.
The sound passed through the door and reached Yan Yize's ears, silently tightening her heart. Her hands unconsciously clenched, and a strange itch came from her throat, making her want to cough lightly, but for various reasons she couldn't cough.
She remained silent for so long that Shang Xu inside the room thought the person outside had left, and his tense nerves relaxed. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, a clear and familiar voice suddenly entered his ears through the door.
Yan Yize couldn't help but swallow, but the itching in her throat didn't subside; instead, it seemed to be getting worse. She forced herself to endure the itch and said, "It's me."
The calm voice exploded in Shang Xu's ears like a thunderclap, stirring up a storm in his mind. His heart jumped into his throat, and the breath he had just relaxed was stuck in his chest.
Shang Xu lowered his eyes, unsure of what to do. He couldn't help but wonder about her purpose. She had just brought a man back, and they were currently deeply in love. Why would she have time to come here?
Shang Xu didn't believe she had simply come looking for him. After all, the man's appearance had already proven that she didn't have a trace of him in her heart. If she had even a shred of affection for him, she wouldn't have brought back another man after only half a month of not seeing him.
Thinking of this, his mood became even heavier, and a look of loneliness appeared in Shang Xu's eyes. He also guessed what was going on with her arrival, thinking that she was probably there to warn him on behalf of the man.
Shang Xu's lips twitched bitterly, and the desolation in his eyes deepened. In fact, she didn't have to be like this. Even if she hadn't come, he wouldn't have done anything to that man. After all, he wasn't the type to make things difficult for others, and besides, he was very clear about his own position.
Yan Yize stood at the door for a long time, but did not hear his voice. Worried that something might have happened to him, he became anxious and asked, "Shang Xu, may I come in?"
Shang Xu raised his hand to touch the sachet on his chest, his gaze fixed on the door. Separated by the door, he could not see her, but he had already depicted her features in his mind thousands of times.
If he were to step forward and open the door, he would be able to see the face he had imagined a thousand times in his mind, but she had come for someone else.
Shang Xu felt suffocated, and his anticipation of seeing her seemed to have diminished.
"Shang Xu, are you alright?" Seeing that he hadn't responded for a long time, Yan Yize couldn't help but call out to him again.
"Um."
Upon hearing the response, Yan Yize's worry lessened somewhat, and he continued to ask, "May I come in?"
After she finished speaking, the room fell silent again. Yan Yize realized that Shang Xu was resisting seeing her.
Why?
She couldn't understand it.
"Shangxu"
"Um."
"May I come in?"
Another long silence followed.
Yan Yize tested it twice more, and every time she mentioned going in, there was no sound from inside. She finally confirmed her thoughts.
She couldn't quite describe the feeling, but it was like an overturned wine jar, the pungent smell spreading throughout her body, making her feel extremely uncomfortable.
Yan Yize pursed his lips, knowing that there would be no result today. He turned around, his back to the door, and a sense of loneliness could not be hidden in his usually calm eyes.
