Chapter 34 Is a divorce really necessary? ...
The fierce, biting wind tugged at the chains on the eaves, causing the copper bells to ring. The clear, crisp sound of the bells startled the person standing under the eaves.
Shang Xu gripped the food box tightly with his knuckles, glanced up at the tightly closed study door, then lowered his head sadly. He had been standing there for a long time, but he didn't know whether he should go in or not.
Shang Xu hesitated. Yan Yize had saved him and was his benefactor. He should go and visit her, but the New Year was only half a month away.
He pursed his lips, his gaze falling on the tightly closed door, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and loneliness, like a small river that stretched as far as the eye could see.
Before he could come up with an answer, the tightly closed door suddenly opened in front of him, and a familiar figure stood in the doorway, looking at him without flinching.
Caught off guard, he met her gaze. Her eyes were long and upturned at the corners, her pupils dark, like a bottomless abyss, exceptionally attractive. Things happened too fast and too suddenly; he forgot how to react and just stared blankly at her.
As the wind picked up again, the copper bells hanging from the eaves swayed in the breeze and rang out once more, their clear, melodious "ding-a-ling" startling Shang Xu, who was standing under the bells, back to his senses.
Yan Yize appeared in front of him at some point, only a step away, his eyes shining like a hunter locking onto his prey.
"Since you're here, why don't you go in?"
Shang Xu panicked terribly, her fingers tightened around the food box, she held her breath nervously, and dared not look at him. "I..."
"Hmm?" Yan Yize's gaze remained fixed on him, his expression calm and tolerant. "What's wrong?"
Shang Xu was stumped, unable to come up with a reasonable excuse for a long time. Just as he was stammering and not knowing what to say, a sudden inspiration struck him: "I, I just arrived."
"Yeah?"
Yan Yize smiled without saying a word. Hui Xue had informed him of his arrival long ago, and she had been waiting for him in the house ever since. However, after waiting for a long time, the person who was supposed to appear did not show up, so she had no choice but to come out to look for him.
Shang Xu nodded guiltily, staring at the tips of his shoes, "Yes, yes."
Yan Yize didn't make things difficult for him anymore. His gaze shifted downwards, and when it landed on the food box in the man's hand, he paused. "For me?"
Shang Xu followed her gaze, and his heart, which had just calmed down, suddenly surged like boiling water. His hand, which was being stared at, froze, and he dared not move at all.
"Um."
Shang Xu suddenly remembered an old story. When they were newly married, he had brought her hot soup to please her, but he left early and did not know whether she had drunk it or not.
His boiling heart suddenly cooled, as if he had been doused with cold water in the dead of winter. Shang Xu lowered his head and stood there silently, realizing later that this action had many implications.
She is the mistress of this vast royal palace; what kind of soup can't she have?
Just as he was pondering what excuse to use to leave with his soup, Yan Yize, who was sitting opposite him, spoke up, "Let's go."
Go? Where to? Shang Xu's thoughts were still wandering, and he subconsciously followed her. When he came to his senses, he was already standing in the study.
Yan Yize turned to face him, and just as Shang Xu was wondering what she was going to do, she reached out her hand to him.
Shang Xu blinked in confusion, completely bewildered, staring blankly at her, utterly unable to understand what she meant.
Yan Yize sighed softly. Seeing that he still didn't understand, he pointed to the food box the man was carrying and said directly, "Isn't it for me?"
Shang Xu finally realized what was happening, and instantly blushed with embarrassment. He hurriedly handed her the food box, and fearing she might misunderstand, quickly added, "It's for you."
He wasn't usually stupid, so how could he be so foolish now? He couldn't help but curse himself inwardly.
Yan Yize took it, placed it on the table, and then opened it. Instantly, a rich aroma wafted out, making one's appetite increase. There were small bowls prepared in the food box. She took a porcelain spoon and scooped out two bowls, handing one to him and keeping the other for herself.
She sat down, picked up the glass and took a sip. Instantly, the aroma filled her mouth. She took another sip and praised it generously, "It's delicious."
Witnessing her effortless performance, Shang Xu's eyes widened, his lips slightly parted in surprise. Just a moment ago, he was certain she wouldn't drink it, but in the blink of an eye, she proved him wrong.
Although he was embarrassed, he didn't feel ashamed at all. Instead, he felt an indescribable joy. She drank the soup he made and said it was delicious. Shang Xu felt like he was on cloud nine, and his heart was filled with sweetness.
Suddenly, a voice broke in, "Clean this place, and this place, clean it all up."
The two instinctively looked over and saw the housekeeper, followed by a large group of servants with brooms, sweeping away the dust as she had instructed.
The steward saw the two of them through the window, walked in with a smile and bowed. Before they could ask any questions, he said with a smile, "Your Highness, Young Master Shang, it's almost the New Year, and this old servant is having people sweep the dust."
The atmosphere in the room instantly cooled down upon hearing this.
The butler froze, looking at her and then at him, going over what he had just said several times, but couldn't find anything wrong with it. However, she knew she must have said something wrong. In order not to be caught in the crossfire, she rolled her eyes and said, "Your Highness, I think the place is almost cleaned up, so I won't disturb you and Young Master Shang any longer."
After saying that, the butler quickly fled.
Inside the room, no one took the initiative to break the silence, clearly thinking of what had been said beforeāa divorce after the New Year.
Although Shang Xu did not show it, a faint expectation remained in her heart, but in her long silence, that expectation was dashed.
Disheartened, he got up and took his leave.
Yan Yize turned her head and glanced at the fragrant soup on the table. Suddenly, she lost her appetite. She lowered her eyes, feeling confused. Should she really get a divorce?
