Chapter 5 (11)
After working overtime for seventy-two hours straight, Yu Qing suffered a ruptured cerebral blood vessel and collapsed at his workstation. He was rushed to the hospital unconscious, and despite emergency treatment, his condition was minimal. He had a persistent fever. When Yu Shuang and Kang Long arrived, the hospital had just issued a critical illness notice.
Seeing her elder sister-in-law arrive, Yu Qing's wife burst into tears, clutching Shuang's hand, her whole body trembling. His mother-in-law was with him, and while she wasn't in tears, she looked worried. She had learned that her son-in-law had a sudden illness, his blood pressure and heart rate had skyrocketed, and he had nearly passed out, and was currently in the emergency room receiving intravenous drips.
Yu Qing's wife was pregnant, her hair disheveled. She was about to give birth, so she shouldn't get too excited. She kept saying, "What should I do?" Yu Shuang felt uneasy, and anxiously patted her hand. "It's okay, she can be saved! She can be saved!"
Of course he can be saved. However, the two options given by the hospital sound like walking on the edge of a knife. One is conservative treatment, taking medicine, and trying to reduce the fever first, but it seems difficult at the moment. Yu Qing has been having a fever; the second is craniotomy, there may still be a glimmer of hope. Yu Qing's wife couldn't make up her mind. Craniotomy means splitting the head! Can the person still get better? Yu Shuang was anxious, "We have to make a decision. We have to try our best!" Yu Qing's wife sobbed and looked at her elder sister-in-law, "What if..."
"No what-if!" Yu Shuang didn't dare think about that what-if. Truly, when her mother died, she felt like the world had collapsed. Back then, she hadn't realized how important her brother was; she'd considered him a burden, a nuisance. But when life and death struck, a thought flashed through Yu Shuang's mind: What if her brother truly was gone? There truly was no one in this world directly connected to her. She was a complete orphan. She felt sorry for her mother, for not taking good care of her brother. But in matters like these, life and death are determined by fate, and wealth and honor are determined by God... Yu Shuang quickly scrambled her thoughts, trying not to dwell on them.
The mother-in-law folded her hands and prayed beside him. After a while, she gave up on herself and stamped her feet and beat her chest, "If Xiaoqing really wants that... I will... I will jump into Jinji Lake... I will not live anymore!" Yuqing is the pillar of the family. Without him, there will be no source of food.
They are all useless people.
Can't wait. With no other options, Yu Qing's wife signed the document, trembling. A craniotomy. No cash to pay for it. She was broke. Yu Shuang had left in such a hurry that she didn't have any money on hand—she wasn't used to putting cash in her mobile payment system. Ultimately, Kang Long came to her rescue, providing the money first and then quickly searching for help, asking his local classmates and then calling Yuan Kai to ask for his help, to see if they could find the best brain surgeon to perform the surgery.
Fortunately, Yuan Kai's concern led him to contact the hospital's best specialist, Director Zhu, who agreed to perform the surgery. Everyone seemed to see hope and prayed to the heavens.
It was settled. The surgery was scheduled for ten the next day, and Yu Qing's mother-in-law went home to rest. There was an elderly woman at home and two children to take care of. Yu Qing's wife refused to leave, so she stayed by the bedside to watch. Yu Shuang said, "Rest a while. There's still a child," pointing to the one in her belly. Yu Qing's wife felt a little ashamed. This child came at the wrong time. His eldest sister-in-law had advised them against it, but Yu Qing had insisted. Now that he was well, what should he do?
I can only cry and pay with tears.
Yu Shuang couldn't bear to see her like this, so she asked Kang Long to go to a nearby hotel to book a room for her brother's wife so that she could rest first while she stayed with her brother.
It was already dark when everything was done. Kang Long returned and squatted beside Yu Shuang. "Thank you for your hard work... Thank you... for the money..." Only then did she finally manage to thank him.
"Don't talk about this now." Kang Long stopped him.
Yu Shuang took a deep breath and said sadly, "I told them not to have any more children... They had to have two... It's not tiring enough... Now," she sniffed, and Kang Long grabbed her wrist, "They're exhausted..."
Yu Shuang feels sorry for his younger brother.
There was a long silence.
Yu Qing lay flat on his back, his expression seemingly pain-free. Yu Shuang stared at his brother, his heart pounding.
"No." She suddenly spat out these two words.
Kang Long didn't understand and just hummed.
"No." She stared at Kang Long.
"oh."
"Your fortune telling is wrong."
Kang Long took a deep breath. What time is it?
"Didn't they say he would be rich?" She was surprised. "Where is that?"
"No...this...and..." Kang Long couldn't explain clearly.
"It's a lie." Yu Shuang said sadly.
"Xiao Shuang..."
"What should I do?" Yu Shuang was desperate.
Kang Long had no choice but to comfort her and said it was okay.
Haoyu is going to Singapore to receive the Young Chinese Science and Technology Innovation Award. This is the first important award in his life.
He invited both his parents to witness his growth. Yu Meng didn't want to miss her son's important moment, but she worried about running into Luan Chengyun—the inevitable encounter. He hadn't heard about the beauty salon's opening, and he eagerly sent a flower basket. Was he trying to make a fool of himself? Or was he trying to show off his presence? After much deliberation, Yu Meng decided to go. For her son, enduring a few minutes of her ex-husband's wrath was worth it.
Before leaving, she said goodbye to Liangcai. Liangcai didn't ask her about these matters. He had a daughter, but he rarely mentioned her, saying she was in the United States. They hadn't had enough of their own world yet. Yu Meng believed that these tedious matters could be dealt with before marriage, no need to worry about them beforehand.
She believes that things will work out.
They checked into the hotel. She was on the eighth floor, Luan Chengyun on the thirty-eighth. This hotel was closest to the venue. Haoyu had told her that his father was upstairs.
Yu Meng asked about Zhengyu. Haoyu said that he had an exam coming up and was studying hard. She then asked about Haoyu's studies, relationships, and life. Haoyu responded to each question with ease. After asking the serious questions, Yu Meng said seriously, "Son, this is the relationship between your father and me now. From now on, you have to take a stand."
Haoyu immediately said: "Don't worry, I will definitely support you."
"Oh," Yu Meng was happy, "Isn't it that in front of your dad, I said I stand by your dad. When it comes to spending money, I can't compare to your promising father."
Haoyu said casually, "He is poor now."
Yu Meng couldn't help but take a deep breath, "Did you need living expenses?"
"No."
"That poor ass."
“The houses have all been sold.”
"Serves you right!" Yu Meng said, "Your ambition is higher than the sky, okay? You poked a hole in the sky, so you should just stick your butt up to plug it. Things change over time, and you'll live through three periods of poverty and three periods of wealth. Don't be so arrogant."
"It seems like he needs to find a stepmother." Haoyu revealed more news.
Yu Meng recalled the "chicken" he saw in the roast duck restaurant last time.
"It's no surprise that he could do this."
"I'm still choosing. I have several options."
"Bad behavior."
"Mom, if you want to find a stepfather for me, you have to approve it through our review."
Yu Meng was like facing a formidable enemy. "Tell me, what are your standards?"
"He has to be really good to make me convinced."
Yu Meng felt relieved. Who wouldn't admire Liang Cai? Where could one find someone better than him? Powerful and imposing, in her eyes, Liang Cai had few flaws, aside from his age. Oh no, his age was also an advantage. In that particular field, Liang Cai was considered young, his glory just beginning.
I didn't sleep well that night. I received three calls, all from landlines. I answered, but no one answered. Was it haunted? I finally unplugged the line and complained to the front desk the next day.
The front desk couldn't find it either. It wasn't an external line.
Yu Meng thought it was most likely Luan Chengyun's doing. She stood in the lobby, arguing with the receptionist in broken English.
A figure floated by.
The head is the head and the face is the face.
Luan Chengyun wore trousers, a shirt, suspenders, and a bow tie, looking like an old gentleman. "What for?! I'm not asking you to play the violin!" He was beaming.
Yu Meng, unwilling to be left behind, hurried back to her room to tidy herself up. She wanted to be beautiful! She couldn't let Luan Chengyun outdo her.
Sitting in the audience, they applauded. Haoyu took the stage to receive his award. Yu Meng and Luan Chengyun sat at the east and west ends, respectively. Yu Meng had deliberately avoided them, as if she were far away. After the awards were handed out, it was time for the group photo, and the son invited his parents to the stage. Yu Meng and Luan Chengyun, starting from opposite ends, converged on the stage.
The son still stood in the middle, his parents on his left and right, saying, "Eggplant." The conference photographer snapped away. It was time to leave the stage. Yu Meng carefully descended the stairs, then turned around to see Luan Chengyun following her down.
Damn it!
The crowd hadn't dispersed yet. They were all parents of students, and some local students had come to observe. It was packed. Yu Meng had nowhere to escape. Luan Chengyun moved closer to her. Yu Meng flinched in disgust. He tilted his head and said in Chinese, "You're not idle." Yu Meng was surprised. What did he mean? Not idle? Did he mean she was starting a business or finding a boyfriend? Was it his business? He asked without context.
She retorted, "You're busy too."
Luan Chengyun laughed out loud.
Yu Meng was startled.
This man is mentally ill.
"Mengmeng." He called out after he finished laughing.
Yu Meng felt nauseous and lowered his voice, saying solemnly, "Please respect yourself!"
“We are the most suitable.”
"Bullshit!" She was so angry that she couldn't keep her composure anymore.
This is sexual harassment!
"Do you really think he will marry you?" he asked again.
Yu Meng's head was foggy. He knew this again? He was so well-informed. What did he want? Who did he want to harm? Would he dare? Liangcai was such a great person, and he was just jealous! He just couldn't bear to see her thrive! He just didn't want to see her ditch him and be happy on her own!
"Go get your chicken!" Yu Meng said bluntly.
The host came down to interview someone, and the cameras followed. They stopped at Yu Meng and Luan Chengyun. They were the parents of the outstanding award winner, "Luan." The microphone was raised to Yu Meng's lips. Her English was poor, and she couldn't articulate anything. After a long pause, she could only manage, "My son is very good." To prevent his ex-wife from further embarrassment, Luan Chengyun took the microphone and spoke in fluent, standard American English.
People who don't know him think he is an elegant gentleman.
