Chapter 7 (4)

Chapter 7 (4)

Yu Shuang was surprised to hear this, thinking Kang Long was kicking them out again. She quickly said, "Chairman Kang, live here peacefully and stay as long as you want. It's big enough for two adults and three children, two bright and clean rooms!"

Chairman Kang said, "No, no, it's not about that. I have something else to do when I get back."

It sounded like an excuse. Yu Shuang was helpless.

Chairman Kang added, "Xiao Yu, thank you for these days. Chairman Kang recognizes you as his daughter-in-law from the bottom of his heart."

Yu Shuang hurriedly said, "No... Chairman Kang... that..."

Chairman Kang said, "Kang Long is such a stubborn guy! But I think he treats you well. He also said that he likes you, cares about you, and can get along with you. He is a good life partner." He paused and said, "Look, Chairman Kang is leaving and we don't know when he will be back. Tell Chairman Kang the truth. When do you and Kang Long plan to do it?"

Yu Shuang was suddenly overwhelmed.

"Chairman...that..."

"Just tell me what's going on. I'm his father. If I don't take care of him, who will?"

Yu Shuang hadn't imagined Chairman Kang could be so warm and considerate towards Kang Long. A father's tenderness. Looking into Chairman Kang's eyes, eager for an answer, so sincere and genuine, the lies Yu Shuang had woven in her heart instantly disintegrated. She had to tell the truth, she had to tell the truth. She couldn't bear to lie to such a chairman—no, father, such an old man.

"Not ready yet." Yu Shuang tried to be tactful.

"When do you plan to prepare?"

"Um……"

"It's hard to have children when you're older."

She couldn't imagine that Chairman Kang, a man of steel, would care about women's fertility. Zhang Fei threaded a needle with a rough, yet delicate, technique.

"I'll think about it."

"Be brave and take responsibility. You've done a great job raising Chun'er." With that, Chairman Kang began packing again. A few days later, Yu Shuang, Chun'er, and Kang Long threw a farewell party for Chairman Kang. Deeply moved, Chairman Kang got drunk, even toasting to a small portrait of Yu Shuang's mother.

Afterward, Yu Shuang told Kang Long, "Your father is a man of temperament." Kang Long didn't respond. He was a little worried about his father returning to the old house, all alone. They started looking for a nanny, but finding the right one wasn't easy. Before they could find a live-in nanny, they hired a part-time worker.

"He cares about you." Yu Shuang said again.

"You're just caring too much." For some reason, Kang Long always likes to be cruel to his father.

"He asked me when I would marry you."

Kang Long was surprised and speechless.

Yu Shuang continued, "I said I didn't know, I wasn't prepared." He added, "But I always felt sorry for him."

"Be for your own heart, don't worry about what others think."

"He's your father."

"So what?"

"He cares about you and loves you, even if you may not agree with his methods. He wants you to be happy," Yu Shuang said. "When he asked me that, I felt sorry for you and like I was wasting your time."

"Don't say that. I do it willingly."

"You love children more than I do."

"In your previous life, you were a man and I was a woman." Kang Long joked.

"Do you still love me?" Yu Shuang asked. "I'm talking about that kind of love, passionate love."

"I don't know." Kang Long was not quite sure what love was.

Yu Shuang took his hand and placed it on his left atrium, "Ask about this."

"It seems... a little."

"I don't seem to have those feelings for you anymore," Yu Shuang said bluntly, "Work... the kids... and all sorts of other things... I doubt myself... I just... I just don't have any reason to get married..."

"Train further." Kang Long remained calm.

"Can it be cultivated?"

"Like a chestnut tree, cleft-grafted."

"Try again?"

"I'm fine." Kang Long said firmly.

Rui came to see Shuang and was surprised to learn that Chairman Kang had moved out. She asked Shuang if there was a problem with Kang Long. Shuang said there wasn't a problem, just that things had faded. Chairman Kang's departure had nothing to do with Kang Long. As she was speaking, Yu Qing's wife walked in with their three children. Yu Rui instantly understood. After everyone washed their hands and ate fruit, Yu Shuang whispered to her, "One child is a treasure, two children are perfect, three children are hell." Yu Rui covered her mouth and laughed.

Shuang asked about Yu Qie's situation. Yu Rui briefly explained. Even someone as indifferent as Shuang felt that Bai Yuankai might be interested in Qie. Yu Rui deliberately changed her tone, "I don't know, and I don't dare to ask." Yu Shuang said that she would ask later, if it was true, it was true, if it was false, it was false, don't play with the girl. The two talked about Jia Jie, and they were both worried. Yu Shuang said that she would invite Yu Jia to listen to Kunqu Opera more often to distract her. She asked Rui again, "How is your work?"

"The atmosphere has been subtle recently," said Yu Rui.

Yes, it was subtle. The atmosphere was even more subtle when she entered the office that day. Ye Cha had a stern face—as if deliberately trying to displease her. Yu Rui went to the tea room and made two cups of coffee, handing one to Ye Cha. "What's going on?" She forced a smile, her attitude softening. Ye Cha was packing up his papers, typing away, and ignoring her.

"Jack," she called again. Change to an English name.

"Don't talk to me." Ye Cha said angrily.

"What's wrong with me?"

"You know it yourself!" Still angry.

It wasn't until the HR manager called that Yu Rui understood what had happened. There had been a change in her position at the company, and she had been promoted to Han Guang's first assistant, replacing Ye Cha. Unable to accept the position, Ye Cha resigned and moved to the shopping mall sales department, where he was offered the title of deputy director, a nominal position.

Who did it? Yu Rui was bewildered. Ye Cha hated her to the core. Looking at his murderous gaze, Yu Rui knew without asking that he must have thought she had used a secret weapon, perhaps even some special method to take down President Han. Unjust! Early this Monday morning, Yu Rui realized she had lost a friendship.

Yu Rui became Han Guang's first assistant, responsible for handling all emails and paperwork. This was clearly not her forte. However, when she learned from Ye Cha the power behind this transfer, she found it even more strange.

It was arranged by Weng Yue and approved by Han Guang.

Ye Cha had a lot of guesses, but he kept silent. He had to obey the arrangements and continue working here. He and Yu Rui soon resumed their friendship. But this friendship was not the same as before. Ye Cha only said one sentence, "If you become rich and powerful, don't forget me."

After accepting the job, Yu Rui immediately realized the challenge. She hadn't anticipated the sheer volume of paperwork required of her as a first assistant. She set a high bar for herself, demanding clear, coherent communication and articulation. She wanted to be a capable secretary. To meet her standards, Yu Rui worked overtime almost every day. Her younger sister, Yu Qi, had already begun her internship, and Yuankai Company had promised her a permanent position in three months.

Because she was so busy, Yu Rui ordered lunch to be taken to the office, both to save time and to give her sister and Bai Yuankai some space. Yu Qi came home and said she was now Yuankai's assistant. Yu Rui was amused. How could two sisters both be assistants? Assistants weren't professional, a fact she resented. However, Yu Rui soon received orders; she had a new job.

Han Guang was planning a biography, and Ye Cha was in charge of the writing. However, they were currently short on material. Therefore, Yu Rui had to interview the chairman every noon. This lasted from half an hour to forty minutes. Yu Rui suddenly realized that this was the real reason for her transfer to this position.

It was lunchtime, and the chairman was there. Yu Rui arrived at the office, carrying a large notebook and two recorders. The door was ajar. She knocked and walked in. Han Guang was leaning back in a large leather chair, at a 60-degree angle, as if asleep. Seeing this, Yu Rui stood for a few seconds before picking up her pace and heading out again.

"Sit down." Han Guang said, still without opening his eyes.

Yu Rui had no choice but to sit down carefully, lift her buttocks, and be ready.

"Have you ever been an actor?"

"Yes."

"Did you bring the outline?"

"I brought it."

"What do you want to talk about?"

Yu Rui quickly flipped through the materials. "Start from 196...when I was a child...in chronological order."

"That's not the way to do it." He suddenly sat up and opened his eyes, his gaze fixed on Yu Rui. She was startled and almost lost her balance.

Han Guang fell back down, half asleep. "Don't treat me as your boss now. You're not my employee either. When you read the materials, just think of yourself as a reader, a stranger. Just ask what interests you most."

Yu Rui's mind searched quickly. Most interesting, most interesting...

"How did you... make your first pot of gold?" Yu Rui regretted asking, scolding herself for being vulgar! "Making money?" Han Guang chuckled, a hint of disdain in his voice. "Luck," he said. "Why don't you ask about my background?"

"From a poor background."

"My father died three months after I was born. Three years after the natural disaster, my mother died. My grandmother raised me..." Han Guang seemed to be lost in long memories.

Han Guang spoke, his voice a cool gray, a passionate red, a melancholic blue. Yu Rui listened, quickly recording with her pen. The recorder ticked by, minute by minute. For a while now, whenever Han Guang had time, Yu Rui would listen to his stories at noon. His narration was fragmented, not chronological, just whatever came to mind. However, her questions, her curiosity, helped him unlock his memory. It was a world Yu Rui had never known. Before taking the college entrance examination, he worked as a farmer, drove a tractor, dug manure, and dealt in lime. He took the college entrance examination for three years and lived in school. The food he ate was moldy and spoiled, but he had to continue eating... After graduating from university, he was assigned to a machinery factory. After the reform and opening up, he came out and went to the south. At the beginning, there were only two employees... Yu Rui found that she was slowly becoming fascinated by Han Guang's story. In the past, he was just a cold chairman, without life, only orders. Now, he has become a complex animal in the narration bit by bit. As he spoke, he would occasionally ask, "Did I scare you?" or "Do you understand what I mean?" He would laugh, as if no one was around, and laugh loudly.

Yu Rui deeply realized that for a man, experience was the most important thing, especially the experience of a successful man. It was unrepeatable, embedded in the monuments of history. "Some things can't be written down," Han Guang occasionally said.

Yu Rui replied that this was just raw material.

He then asked, "What kind of person do you think I am?"

Yu Rui spoke frankly, "A complex animal."

Han Guang laughed out loud, he seemed very satisfied with the title.
