Once she was certain that Fukang'an was far away, Yan Ning felt much more at ease. His tall figure and cold face had made her feel oppressed, and she unconsciously began to imagine ancient generals as ruthless and heartless as Fukang'an.
Zhao Xing stood at the entrance of the military tent, holding a bottle of "medicine" and a roll of white cloth, and softly called out, "Miss."
Hearing Zhao Xing's voice, Yan Ning's expression softened considerably. She felt that this little servant was as cute as her own younger brother.
"Come in."
Yan Ning covered herself with Fukang'an's white cloak, and looked at what Zhao Xing was holding with a little surprise.
Seemingly noticing Yan Ning's confusion, Zhao Xing placed the items on the table, scratched his head, and revealed a simple and honest smile. "The General asked me to bring these in, saying that the young lady would need them."
"Okay, I understand, thank you." Yan Ning smiled faintly.
"You're too kind, young lady. This is my duty." As he spoke, Zhao Xing blushed again and quickly lowered his head.
Seeing that he wore a gray robe with a traditional Chinese jacket over it, and that his youthful appearance was still undeniable, Yan Ning couldn't help but ask, "How old are you this year?"
"This servant is sixteen years old this year."
Yan Ning looked at him, her heart sinking. He was the same age as her younger brother, two years younger than her.
"Please rest, young lady. This servant will take his leave now." With that, Zhao Xing bowed and left.
Yan Ning got out of bed, picked up the medicine and white cloth on the table, and couldn't help but sigh, "Fukang'an looks so cold but is so thoughtful."
After bandaging her wound, Yan Ning changed into the clothes Fukang'an had sent. Because they were soldiers' uniforms, they were too big for her and lost their original shape. They hung loosely on her body, but they couldn't hide Yan Ning's slender waist.
In this patriarchal era, Fukang'an, unlike his earlier coldness, still treated her with care. This changed Yan Ning's opinion of him, leading her to guess that he was a warm-hearted person beneath his cold exterior.
Yan Ning lifted the curtain and saw patrolling soldiers with weapons, pacing back and forth. She immediately retreated. Sitting back on the bed, Yan Ning still found it hard to accept that she had transmigrated. She murmured to herself:
"I time-traveled to the Prince Gong's Mansion. There must be some connection between me and the mansion, or some strange phenomenon occurred at that time. Time travel? This kind of term that only appears in movies and TV dramas has now unbelievably happened to me. The Prince Gong's Mansion was originally the residence of Heshen. Yes, Heshen. Now I am in the Qianlong era, so it must be related to him."
Thinking of this, Yan Ning immediately shook her head. "That's not right either. I should have met Heshen in Beijing, so why did I meet Fukang'an here? If it wasn't Heshen, then it can only be that some unnatural force brought me here. But what is this force? No matter what the possibility is, I have to go back to Beijing to find out. But what's with the fact that I can glow?"
Yan Ning clutched the jade pendant around her neck. It was a gift from her mother, the only item she brought into this world that connected her to her family. She blinked, silently praying, "Mother, brother, you must wait patiently for me to return." Tears weren't her style, but now, she could only let them flow.
It wasn't someone else's body; it was her own body that had transmigrated here. Here, she wasn't someone else, but herself—Su Yanning. If she died here, she would never be able to return; even her corpse would rot in this unknown land.
"Fortunately, Fukang'an and his men returned to Beijing after the battle, so we should be able to find out the truth by then."
Thinking of Fukang'an, Yan Ning's heart seemed to calm down.
In order to survive in the military camp, Yan Ning felt that she had to rely on Fukang'an as a powerful figure to protect her life amidst the sword fights and return to the capital, back to her own era.
She left the military tent, turned left and right, and found that all the military tents looked the same. She didn't know which military tent Fukang'an was in, and dared not go in rashly.
She tried to ask the soldiers, but they all ignored her, their faces showing disdain as if this was a restricted military area. Carefully weaving through them, Yan Ning knew they hadn't arrested her only because she was brought back by Fukang'an.
Yan Ning looked around and found only one military tent, which had significantly more guards than the others. She felt that this must be it.
The guards at the gate blocked Yan Ning's way with swords drawn. "Halt! No one may enter without the general's order." Their cold expressions and icy voices were as lifeless as terracotta warriors.
"I've come to see General Fukang'an." Although she was angry and scared, Yan Ning held back under these circumstances.
"No one is allowed to enter without the general's orders." The same words, the same expression.
"Brother soldier, please make an exception for me!" Yan Ning pleaded helplessly. After all, the military camp was no place to play around, and her only weapons were her appearance and her feminine fragility.
"Who's outside?" The voice from inside stopped the guard from repeating himself for the third time.
"Reporting to the General, someone wishes to see you." The equally cold tone gave Yan Ning a sliver of comfort; it turned out he was like this to everyone.
"Bring her in."
This time, Yan Ning listened carefully. The voice coming from the military tent was deep and aged, likely that of a middle-aged man. Had she entered the wrong tent? A chill ran down Yan Ning's spine. Entering a military camp without permission was a capital offense; she would be beheaded.
On the very first day of my transmigration, am I going to be beheaded?
Yan Ning's body was covered in cold sweat, which dripped down her body in the summer heat. She walked into the military tent and saw a middle-aged general and Fukang'an standing in front of the sand table map.
