Because Yan Ning was a woman, the guards all stood at a distance, creating a solemn and quiet atmosphere, clearly unaware of what had happened at Fukang'an's place.
"Where is Zhao Xing?" Fukang'an called over the soldiers guarding the gate of the military camp and asked them.
"He went out with Miss Yan Ning."
"Didn't I say? No one is allowed to leave the camp without my order." Fukang'an said angrily, one hand behind his back.
"He said you asked him to accompany Miss Yan Ning out," the military guard kneeling on the ground quickly tried to absolve himself of responsibility.
"I understand, you may leave." Fukang'an frowned for a moment. If Yan Ning was going out, she must be looking for something.
"Someone, bring my horse over here."
As he rode his horse at full speed, Fukang'an saw Yan Ning searching for something at the place where they first met.
"Miss, what are you looking for? We should go back now. If the general comes back soon, I'm doomed." Zhao Xing followed Yan Ning around, turning left and right, not knowing what she was looking for.
Yan Ning saw nothing but grass and scattered rocks, nothing unusual. She pondered to herself that the reason she had come here could only be found out upon returning to the capital. However, Fukang'an was currently holding back his troops, and the enemy's defenses were impregnable. She truly didn't know when this war would end.
"Miss, Miss, doesn't that person look like a general?" Zhao Xing's trembling voice reached Yan Ning's ears.
She looked in the direction Zhao Xing was pointing, and her mouth started to tremble. "It seems so!" The one riding towards them at full speed from afar was none other than Fukang'an!
When they were still some distance from the two, the vines and rocks around them made it difficult for the horse to move forward. Fukang'an jumped off his horse and rushed to the two of them, looking at Yan Ning with the same cold and stern expression.
"General, what brings you here?" Zhao Xing immediately ran over and grabbed the reins that Fukang'an had casually tossed aside, smiling obsequiously.
Fukang'an glared sharply at Zhao Xing, "I'll settle the score with you when we get back to camp!"
After saying that, without giving Yan Ning a chance to speak, he pulled her up and mounted the horse. Zhao Xing hurriedly ran to untie the horse from the tree and followed Fukang'an and Yan Ning.
The three rode at breakneck speed, kicking up clouds of dust. Fukang'an remained silent, while Yan Ning cautiously glanced back at him several times, only to see his cold, unyielding profile.
Upon arriving at the military camp, Fukang'an carried Yan Ning down and immediately ordered the soldiers around him, "Tie Zhao Xing up and bring him to court!"
Zhao Xing immediately knelt on the ground and begged for mercy, saying, "General, spare my life! This servant knows he was wrong."
“I asked Zhao Xing to take me out, it has nothing to do with him. If you want to punish someone, punish me.” Yan Ning grabbed Fukang’an, who was about to return to the military council tent, and pleaded. She didn’t want to implicate Zhao Xing and get punished. Although she tried her best to explain that neither of them were soldiers, Fukang’an’s tightly furrowed and solemn expression made her dare not argue with him.
Fukang'an grasped Yan Ning's hand, his brows furrowed as he looked at her, his voice icy, "Men, take Miss Yan Ning back to her military tent." He then turned and entered the council tent, and two soldiers pulled Zhao Xing along as he followed.
A soldier walked over and said emotionlessly, "Miss Yan Ning, please!" Yan Ning looked at the guarded military tent and then at the expressionless soldier beside her. She knew that if she angered Fukang'an at this moment, the consequences would be even more serious.
Yan Ning paced back and forth in the military tent, feeling anxious but having nothing else to do.
"Ouch, ouch..."
Hearing the sound of Zhao Xing being dragged out, Yan Ning quickly ran out and followed the soldiers who were carrying Zhao Xing into the military tent where Zhao Xing was staying.
"Zhao Xing, are you alright?" Upon seeing Yan Ning enter, the soldiers in the tent all discreetly withdrew. Yan Ning looked at Zhao Xing lying on the bed, her heart filled with guilt.
"I'm fine! Although it hurts a bit now, after a while, new flesh and skin will grow; I'll be considered to have delicate skin now. Hehe..." Zhao Xing joked with Yan Ning, enduring the pain, just to avoid making her feel guilty.
Yan Ning looked at him; he was the same age as her younger brother and, like him, liked to make her happy.
Unconsciously, she felt a little closer to Zhao Xing. She sat down, straightened Zhao Xing's clothes, and said with a touch of sadness, "If your mother and sister knew, how heartbroken they would be!"
"I was an orphan since I was a child. I was sold to the Fucha family and became a general's page." Zhao Xing's voice lowered when he mentioned his family.
"Then don't you blame him? It was his orders that led to you being beaten like this?" Yan Ning noticed Zhao Xing's unusual behavior and changed the subject.
"It was this servant who violated military regulations and deserved punishment, but the general has already been lenient." Zhao Xing looked up and saw Fukang'an approaching, showing no resentment from his recent punishment, and said with a grin, "This servant greets the general. I will give you a full salute when I am better."
When Yan Ning saw Fukang'an, she turned her head away as if in a huff, refusing to look at him. Fukang'an, receiving no response to Yan Ning's gaze, sat awkwardly at the table, put down the medicine bottle, and began to fiddle with the jade pendant at his waist.
Zhao Xing looked at Fukang'an, then at Yan Ning, and chuckled. Fukang'an asked seriously, "What are you laughing at?" Yan Ning also looked at Zhao Xing with a puzzled expression.
"This servant laughs at General Xiao and Miss Yan Ning, they seem like a young couple having a tiff," Zhao Xing said with an air of experience. Hearing this, Fukang'an beamed with delight, while Yan Ning ran away in embarrassment.
Back in her tent, Yan Ning stared blankly at the clothes Fukang'an had given her. She no longer disliked him as much as she had when they first met, but this love that transcended time was destined to be a tragedy. Why hurt him, and herself in the process?
