Chapter 7 Returning to Familiar Grounds to Find the Way, Identity Suspected

Yan Ning was furious. Looking at Fukang'an's matter-of-fact expression, a feeling of being looked down upon welled up inside her. What was the difference between being a concubine and being a mistress? It was just that the former had the added legitimacy of being a concubine. Although her family background was ordinary, she would not become someone's concubine and destroy another's family.

"Please leave, General!"

Yan Ning instantly turned icy cold, and her previous positive impression of Fukang'an vanished.

Having seemingly already witnessed Yan Ning's unpredictable behavior, Fukang'an glanced at her and left. On his way back to the military tent, his brows furrowed. So many women were willing to give themselves to him; the Fucha family was not only related to the imperial family but also a family of generals—how many women longed to step through their gates! Why was she so angry?

After a few days, Yan Ning realized that this place was completely different from the military camp she had imagined. The soldiers in the camp did not go out to fight; there were no bugle calls or sounds of battle. Apart from daily training and shift patrols, Fukang'an's soldiers rarely went out. Sometimes it was completely silent, and sometimes the sound of orderly boots clattering on the ground could be heard.

Although they were in the same military camp, Yan Ning hadn't seen Fukang'an for several days. Zhao Xing, on the other hand, often brought her food and water. From him, Yan Ning learned a little about the current situation in the camp. In order to destroy the enemy's bunker in one fell swoop, Fukang'an frequently scouted the enemy camp at night and ordered his soldiers to rest to create suspicion about the enemy.

Once she calmed down, the image of Fukang'an in his blue armor flashed through Yan Ning's mind. He was handsome and resolute, with a cold and solemn expression. His tall and strong physique gave Yan Ning, whose heart was hanging in suspense, a temporary sense of security.

Zhao Xing said they had been away from home for three years. Judging from Zhao Xing's tone, who knows how long this war will last!

"Zhao Xing, take me outside the military camp and let me have a look!"

Upon hearing that there was no prospect of returning to the capital, Yan Ning wanted to go to the place where she woke up to see if she could find any clues about her time travel. Now that she was familiar with Zhao Xing, she guessed that he wouldn't refuse, but seeing Zhao Xing's loyalty to his master, Yan Ning's heart began to pound.

As expected, Zhao Xing, standing to the side, scratched his shiny forehead with a troubled expression. "Well, the general has ordered that no one is allowed to leave the camp without his orders. Otherwise, they will be punished according to military law!"

“But I’m not a soldier, and you’re not wearing a soldier’s uniform either.” Yan Ning smiled slightly, pointing to Zhao Xing’s servant’s clothes and her own Qing-style dress. There’s always a way to circumvent the rules!

Zhao Xing tilted his head and thought for a while. His honest and kind face turned serious for a moment before he grinned. "What you say is true, Miss!" Then he led the way, guiding Yan Ning out.

Just as Zhao Xing had said, the two were stopped at the entrance of the military camp. "No one is allowed to leave without the general's order." With the same tone and expression as the guards outside the military tent that day, Yan Ning looked helplessly at Zhao Xing beside her.

"How dare you! Don't you know who Miss Yan Ning is? The general asked me to accompany Miss Yan Ning on some business." Zhao Xing puffed out his chest and said seriously, his expression showing a maturity beyond his years.

Upon hearing Zhao Xing's words, Yan Ning's eyes widened immediately. He was actually using her name! However, his words did have an effect; the guards exchanged glances and obediently made way.

After Zhao Xing helped Yan Ning onto the horse, he led the horse on foot since Yan Ning couldn't ride.

"Who am I?" After walking for a while and confirming that it was safe, Yan Ning asked Zhao Xing with displeasure.

"Hehe... You are the sweetheart of our general!" Zhao Xing could tell that Yan Ning was angry about him using her as a shield earlier, so he started joking with her.

"Don't talk nonsense!" Yan Ning looked ahead awkwardly. In the distance, there were four mountain peaks stretching endlessly, their peaks covered in snow and shimmering with silver light. "What are those mountains?" Yan Ning asked Zhao Xing, pointing to the mountains she saw.

"Oh, that's the sacred mountain of the locals—Mount Siguniang. Miss, we should head back soon!" Zhao Xing thought Yan Ning was going there. Although the mountain looked close, it would take several days to get there on horseback.

"Zhao Xing, do you know where I met your general?" That day was too rushed, and Yan Ning didn't remember the way back to camp very clearly.

"How could this servant possibly know?"

Seeing Zhao Xing's mischievous look, Yan Ning knew he was overthinking things again. "Then let's keep going." Relying on her vague memory of that day, Yan Ning and Zhao Xing took many wrong turns, and by the time they reached their destination, it was almost dusk. Looking around, wildflowers bloomed everywhere, and the river was crystal clear.

"Girl, this is the Dadu River," Zhao Xing said to Yan Ning, who was staring blankly at the river, after tying his horse to a tree.

Yan Ning thought of those circumnavigators who could eventually return to their starting point, but what about herself? What would it take for her to get back to the beginning? "Tell me, where does this river end?" she asked, lost in thought.

“The capital city!” Zhao Xing did not understand what Yan Ning was saying. “If you keep following this road, you can reach the capital city.”

After returning from the enemy camp, Fukang'an, realizing he hadn't had a chance to see Yan Ning for the past few days, headed towards her military tent. Although her beauty was breathtaking, what he couldn't forget most was Yan Ning's personality; sometimes delicate, sometimes aloof, it constantly lingered in his mind.

"Cough cough..."

"Cough cough..."

Fukang'an coughed a few times, but no one answered. He turned his head and glanced around; although the mountain shadows blocked the view, the sun was still hanging high and pale—it wasn't time to rest. He lifted a corner of the white curtain and tentatively looked inside.

The military tent was small, with no other partitions to obstruct the view, so one could see everything inside at a glance. Only Yan Ning was nowhere to be seen.
