Chapter 16
Before being discharged from the hospital, Gu Xiuyi arranged a full physical examination for Ji Ruan.
The morning check-up required fasting, so Ji Ruan was pulled out of bed at dawn and walked around various departments. He was so hungry that he was seeing stars.
Leaning against the head of the bed and looking at Gu Xiuyi, I felt that man's face flying to the sky and then falling to the ground. I felt so dizzy that I could only close my eyes and rest.
Aunt Zhao fed him half a bowl of porridge, but he was so hungry that his stomach hurt and he vomited after a while. He should have been discharged from the hospital that day, but after all the trouble, he had to stay in the hospital for another night and was taken home the next morning in a listless state.
During the days when Ji Ruan was sick, he lived on a life that only drank dew. His stomach was sensitive, so he could only drink the porridge cooked by Aunt Zhao every day, and occasionally eat some grass. He had no strength in his body, and he had to rely on Gu Xiuyi to half-support and half-carry him upstairs and then put him into the quilt.
The consequence of not being able to eat is losing weight. Gu Xiuyi looked at the small part of Ji Ruan's wrist sticking out from the quilt and felt upset.
The physical examination that he had carefully arranged, down to the last detail, only brought him a report that was even more depressing.
Gu Xiuyi held the report and read it from beginning to end several times, even taking out his glasses that he hadn't worn for a long time, but he still couldn't believe it and suspected that there was something wrong with his eyes.
Anemia, hypoglycemia, malnutrition, all indicators are in a mess, struggling to get past the passing line. If you say it's a big problem, it seems to be barely passable. If you say it's not a big problem, there are problems everywhere.
Gu Xiuyi had a headache the whole day after receiving the report. He always felt that the poor little thing he married to save trouble was starting to lose control because it was too fragile, and was about to turn into a real troublemaker.
He is still the kind of scary, fragile, troublemaker who cannot be hit or scolded, and will faint immediately if you say a harsh word to him.
Ji Ruan stayed in bed in a daze for two days. Only when his stomach felt better and he could eat more oil did he finally come back to life, like a long-dry grass that was finally moistened by the spring rain, shaking its tender leaves and regaining new life.
Every day when Ji Ruan drinks the different soups Aunt Zhao cooks, he would sigh and say that humans cannot live without meat.
Gu Xiuyi started to get busy again. Ji Ruan had lived here for almost a summer vacation. Although she knew that it was normal for Gu Xiuyi not to return to the villa, no matter how long he was on a business trip, she would call him from time to time to chat with him, asking how Xiao An was doing and what Aunt Zhao had cooked for dinner.
But Ji Ruan didn't receive a single call in the past few days, and Gu Xiuyi seemed to be particularly busy.
The next time I saw Gu Xiuyi was on the open day on Saturday.
Ji Ruan was sick before, and was admitted to the hospital before he had time to report to university. He never knew what university life was like until his death.
Now that I have a new life, I can actually step into the university campus, and my heart is pounding with excitement.
As expected, people’s desires will grow. In the past, when there was no hope of life or death, all they wanted was to be alive. After surviving, they would want to live a better, easier and freer life.
Ji Ruan went to bed early that night, and the next day he wore a light blue short-sleeved shirt that looked like a watercolor painting. Aunt Zhao said he looked particularly handsome in that outfit.
After breakfast, Gu Xiuyi picked me up from the yard.
Gu Xiuyi was no longer wearing a suit. He was wearing a casual vertical striped shirt and black trousers. He had broad shoulders and was very tall, a bit like the high-spirited senior on campus in his fantasy.
Ji Ruan admired it twice more with satisfaction.
It rained two days ago. The weather is pretty good today, not too hot, and the sun comes out occasionally.
"How are you feeling?" Gu Xiuyi asked in the car.
Ji Ruan was messaging Han Xiaolin, and while typing he said, "Much better."
Gu Xiuyi looked at Ji Ruan carefully. Although the lost flesh had not grown back yet, he was indeed in much better spirits and seemed to be in a very happy mood.
He was dressed very nicely today, wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt and white shorts, and carrying a casual shoulder bag. The straps made the backpack look very thin, making him look like a young and energetic college student.
He is also the person who suits light blue best that Gu Xiuyi has ever seen.
Gu Xiuyi raised the corners of his mouth unconsciously, and asked Ji Ruan: "Have you been dizzy recently?"
He suffers from anemia and hypoglycemia, and the most common symptoms are dizziness and fatigue.
Ji Ruan looked at Gu Xiuyi with an expression that asked, "How do you know?" "A little bit..." He smiled embarrassedly, "especially when you're hungry."
Ji Ruan has always known that he cannot stand hunger, but in the past he would just feel a little weak when hungry. But now he feels dizzy when he is hungry. One morning he even fell down when he got up. Although the floor was carpeted, he was still stunned and sat on the ground for a long time before getting up.
"You are a little anemic and tend to feel dizzy easily. Be careful to sit up slowly and walk slowly, and try not to fall." Gu Xiuyi repeated the doctor's words word for word.
Ji Ruan touched the tip of his nose and didn't say anything about the fall he had just experienced: "Okay, I get it."
During the freshman mobilization meeting and campus open day, Peking University was bustling with activity right from the school gate. The long boulevard was hung with banners, and freshmen, alumni, relatives and volunteers in blue jackets were bustling about with laughter and joy.
Ji Ruan walked quietly beside Gu Xiuyi, occasionally glancing at the passers-by, and sometimes raising his big eyes to look at the banner above.
There are two whole rows of sycamore trees planted along the boulevard. The trees in this old and famous school are very old, with lush green leaves. Sometimes a few spots of light fall on the sky, causing Ji Ruan to squint his eyes, but after a few seconds, he would raise his head and continue looking.
Gu Xiuyi looked at Ji Ruan quietly and felt that he seemed to have a unique curiosity and yearning for college life.
"Ji Ruan——!"
Han Xiaolin was chatting with a senior student in a blue jacket from a distance. He was very sharp-eyed and immediately spotted Ji Ruan, so he jumped up and waved at him.
Ji Ruan was amused by his funny appearance and burst out laughing.
Gu Xiuyi patted Ji Ruan on the shoulder: "Go."
Ji Ruan looked up at him, her eyelashes fluttering: "What about you?"
Gu Xiuyi's lips curved up slightly, and he spoke in a gentle voice: "The alumni are gathering at North Point Plaza. You guys are in the multi-purpose hall, right? I'll come find you later."
"Well... okay." Ji Ruan thought about it and realized that Gu Xiuyi did have his own things to do.
"By the way," Gu Xiuyi pointed his finger and reminded, "Don't run, walk slowly."
"I understand." Ji Ruan waved his hand and turned to walk towards Han Xiaolin.
Gu Xiuyi watched Ji Ruan walk through the crowd to meet up with his friends. At first, he walked obediently, but when he met Han Xiaolin, the two of them jogged for a few steps with their arms around each other's shoulders.
I don’t know what Han Xiaolin said to amuse Ji Ruan, but the child smiled very happily, with the corners of his mouth raised high and the curve of his eyes curved beautifully. It was a smile unique to an eighteen-year-old.
Gu Xiuyi's expression softened unconsciously. He shook his head and turned to go to his own alumni association.
Peking University is home to many talented people, and many of the people in the alumni association are people he has met in the business world. They come to Gu Xiuyi in waves to get close to him. His cell phone vibrates. It's a call from Song Ling, and Gu Xiuyi presses the button to answer it.
"Boss, Xiaoya said you changed the delivery address back to the villa?" Song Ling asked, "Are you moving back?"
"That's right," Gu Xiuyi declined a glass of champagne and said, "Don't send anything to the apartment in the future."
"So sudden... So you've been busy recently, isn't it just to move?" Song Ling clicked his tongue: "Excuse me, why?"
Gu Xiuyi paused for two seconds and pursed his lips: "Xiao An doesn't even recognize me anymore. If you have a cat, you should spend more time with it."
Xiao An used to live in an apartment with Gu Xiuyi, and Aunt Zhao would come to take care of him from time to time. Since Ji Ruan moved in, Aunt Zhao has been responsible for his daily life and also brought the cat back to the villa.
That's a good excuse.
But Song Ling obviously didn't believe it, and even seemed to be laughing: "Really?"
Maybe it is indeed for the company of the cat, but this cat is not that cat.
Gu Xiuyi: "...Hang up."
His throat was a little dry, so he tugged at his collar and asked a volunteer for a bottle of mineral water.
"Have you seen the dormitory allocation table in the group?" Han Xiaolin pulled Ji Ruan and squeezed through an extremely crowded crowd.
"Yes," Ji Ruan panted a little: "Why am I in the same dormitory with you?"
Han Xiaolin laughed: "They are all the leftovers. You are the only one left from the Chinese Department, I am the only one left from the Sports College, and the other two..."
"Department of Fine Arts and Department of Finance." Ji Ruan added, taking off the ribbon clipped in her hair.
There was an event going on on that stretch of road just now, with a lot of firecrackers being set off, and Ji Ruan was sprayed all over.
"It's quite special. The only all-mixed dormitory in the freshman year chose us. Do you think I should buy a lottery ticket later?" Han Xiaolin smiled with all his might.
Ji Ruan looked at him helplessly and said, "I wish you win 50 million."
"Thank you," Han Xiaolin pushed open the glass door of the multi-purpose hall and asked Ji Ruan, "The military training is about to start. Will you come? When will we move to the dormitory?"
Ji Ruan has been worried these past two days: "I don't know either. I don't want to go to military training. I'll go back and discuss it with Gu Xiuyi. Maybe I can come a few days later."
He has delicate eyebrows and fair skin, and when he frowns slightly, there is a kind of gracefulness that seems to be lingering.
Han Xiaolin was a little stunned, and murmured: "It's okay, Mr. Gu will definitely not want to let you go through military training..."
Ji Ruan: “?”
The registration office for the Chinese Department is at the entrance, but the Sports College is at the back. Han Xiaolin changed the subject: "I'll go over there first. Can you call me later?"
Ji Ruan shook his head: "Gu Xiuyi is coming to see me."
His eyes are clear and he has a talent for torturing single people without saying a word.
"...Okay." Han Xiaolin smiled, "Goodbye."
A gust of wind flashed before Ji Ruan's eyes. Han Xiaolin was indeed a track and field athlete. He looked as thin as a monkey, but in fact his legs were full of muscles. He ran away in a flash.
The senior student at the Chinese Department's station's eyes lit up the moment she saw Ji Ruan, "Junior, are you from our department? Are you reporting in?"
"Yes." Ji Ruan pursed her lips and smiled.
The senior student was quite enthusiastic. She slapped a form on the table and said, "Come on, sit down and fill out the form."
Ji Ruan was a little uncomfortable with this kind of enthusiasm, so he pulled out a stool and sat down: "Thank you, senior."
The multi-purpose hall is equipped with central air conditioning, but due to the large number of people in the venue, the effect is minimal, and almost every department station has brought their own large fan to provide air conditioning.
Ji Ruan was facing the fan of the Chinese Department and felt a little dizzy. He moved his stool slightly to the side before continuing to fill out the form.
The curve of his neck was very graceful when he wrote, like a ballet dancer. Because of sweating, the tip of his nose and the area around his eyes were slightly red, and he had a striking appearance that blended calmness and vigor.
For unknown reasons, more and more people gathered around him, and they kept trying to talk to him.
"Would you like to add me on WeChat, junior?"
"Does my little brother have a girlfriend?"
"Do you prefer someone older or younger? Are you willing to date someone the same age?"
…
As more people came, the air became thinner, and Ji Ruan felt a little dizzy. He paused for a moment, raised his head and smiled gently: "I'm married."
The air seemed to be suddenly blocked by a muffler, and there was silence in an instant.
Ji Ruan breathed a sigh of relief, quickly filled out the form and handed it to his senior.
After a few seconds, the jammer lost its effect and the surrounding voices gradually began to rise again.
"Married? No way..."
"It might be true. He wears a ring on his ring finger..."
"Oh my god, they both graduated from high school, but they got their driver's license faster than I did. I failed the second test five times!"
…
Ji Ruan took the gift bag from the senior student, turned around and walked out quietly.
"Hey! Is he that...Gu...he looks a bit like him..."
"Fuck, that photo... looks like it really is... Gu Xiuyi..."
"At the age of 18, she was admitted to a prestigious university, married into a wealthy family, and was as beautiful as a flower... What a winner in life..."
Ji Ruan once again underestimated Mr. Gu's influence. He didn't expect that he could be recognized. His heart tightened and he quickened his pace to get out.
But there were suddenly so many people around that Ji Ruan felt nervous.
Fortunately, Gu Xiuyi called at this time, and Ji Ruan answered without thinking: "Hello?"
"I'm here..." Gu Xiuyi paused, and suddenly became more serious: "Why is it so noisy over there?"
Ji Ruan covered his ears tightly, fearing that the external machine would be squeezed off by others, and his voice was a little trembling: "I am——"
As he spoke, he saw Gu Xiuyi standing outside through a gap in the crowd. The moment their eyes met, Ji Ruan immediately hung up the phone and trotted out.
Gu Xiuyi should have been running over as well. Although the distance between them seemed quite far, Ji Ruan had only taken two steps when his hand was grabbed and he bumped into Gu Xiuyi.
Ji Ruan's palms were sweating.
Gu Xiuyi held his shoulders and asked, "Are you scared?"
Ji Ruan swallowed and stood firm, shaking his head: "Just now, many people asked me for my WeChat, and I told them that I was married, and then they recognized me as your partner..."
His brows were furrowed, looking both uneasy and shocked.
Gu Xiuyi raised his eyes and glanced ahead. His cold face gave off an aura that kept strangers away, isolating the crowd on the distant steps.
"It's okay," he took Ji Ruan's hand and said, "Let's go."
