Chapter 47 Conflicting Accounts? Who's Lying?

Yan Ning frowned and asked, "Grandma, where is your room? I'll go take a look."

Bai Shanhe pointed to a room next door, and Yan Ning went inside.

The room was clean and tidy, with nothing superfluous.

Sunlight streamed through the half-drawn curtains, dappling the soft carpet, and a faint scent of lavender filled the air.

But Yan Ning, with her sharp eyes, spotted a semi-transparent old woman lying on Bai Shanhe's bed.

The old woman spat on the ground and said in a hoarse and grating voice:

"You old geezer, why aren't you dead yet!"

When she saw Yan Ning, she sneered, "Oh, a young girl has arrived."

Yan Ning stared directly at her and said coldly, "Who are you? Why did you harm my grandmother!"

The old woman sat up, her face full of disdain. "Unbelievable! This little girl can actually see me!"

"Who do you care who I am? I'm not leaving here, what are you going to do about it?"

"Why are you staying here? What grudge do you have against my grandmother?" Yan Ning asked firmly.

The old woman's eyes flickered, as if she was hesitating whether to speak.

After a while, she slowly said, "Hmph, she owes me. Back then, she caused my tragic death because of her own selfish desires."

"I'm going to make her suffer endlessly! I'm going to torture her to death in her hospital bed!"

Yan Ning frowned. She knew her grandmother was a kind person; how could she do such a thing?

She decided to calm the old woman down first, and then figure out a solution.

"Then can you tell me what the reason is? Maybe I can help you solve it," Yan Ning said tentatively.

The old woman's eyes lit up, then dimmed again. "Hmph, you think you can solve this? That thing is long gone, and she's long forgotten about it!"

Yan Ning's heart skipped a beat; she knew that this old woman might really have some unresolved issues.

She decided to find out what happened first, and then try to resolve the situation.

Yan Ning tried to soften her tone, "What exactly happened back then? Mother-in-law, please tell me, I really want to know."

The old woman was silent for a moment, seemingly recalling the past. She then pursed her lips and said:

"Fine, I'll tell you then. Anyway, she owes me."

The old woman began to reminisce about the past; her eyes became unfocused, and her voice trembled slightly.

“Forty years ago, she and I lived together in the village. We were both orphans and depended on each other for survival.”

"Later, we found a treasure map with the location of a treasure written on it. We decided to go and find it together, hoping to change our lives."

“We climbed the mountain for a long time and finally found the cave where the treasure was hidden, but the cave was on a cliff and Bai Shanhe refused to go with me no matter what.”

"Having no other choice, I had to go alone, but I didn't expect that as soon as I climbed into the cave, Bai Shanhe followed me and kicked me off the cliff!"

"I died such a terrible death, but she ran away with the treasure. After I died, I have been wandering around this area, hoping to find her and make her pay for my life!"

Yan Ning was shocked; she hadn't expected things to turn out this way.

She knew her grandmother was a kind person; perhaps there was some misunderstanding.

Yan Ning continued, "So, did Grandma really find the treasure?"

The old woman sneered, "Hmph, of course she took it, otherwise how could she be living so well?"

The old woman sized up Yan Ning, then squinted and said:

“Young lady, I can see you have some skills, but I advise you to stay out of this. This is my feud with her, and I will haunt her to the death.”

Even if you send me away temporarily, I will still come back.

Yan Ning didn't say anything; she decided to go find her grandmother and ask her for clarification first.

Yan Ning walked into the living room and said sincerely, "Grandma, there is a wronged old woman's spirit in your room. She refuses to leave and says that she had a grudge against you back then because of the treasure."

"Can you tell me what exactly happened back then?"

"So it was her who was bothering me? Ah... I see."

Bai Shanhe sighed, her eyes dimming as if she were recalling the past.

She hesitated for a moment, then looked up into the distance, her voice tinged with melancholy:

"That day, we climbed the mountain for a long time and finally arrived at the cave. But the cave was in a dangerous location, and I didn't dare to go. Chunxue insisted on going."

“After several arguments, Chunxue decided to go to the cave to find the treasure by herself. I waited for her on the cliff. Not long after, I heard Chunxue scream and saw her fall off the cliff.”

“I’ve been blaming myself. If I had insisted that she not go to that cave, or if I had gone with her, would she still be alive…?”

Yan Ning frowned deeply. Her grandmother and the old woman each had their own version of events. What was the real situation?

Did her grandmother push her, or did she fall off the cliff on her own?

Who's lying?!

Yan Ning knew that if this matter wasn't investigated thoroughly, the old woman would definitely keep bothering her grandmother.

Although Yan Ning could tell fortunes and catch ghosts, she still couldn't completely eliminate the old woman's vengeful spirit, which had been dead for decades; she could only banish her.

But if you push her too far, what if the old woman does something even more detrimental to her grandmother?

Therefore, she must investigate the truth of the matter.

Yan Ning pondered for a moment, then said to Bai Yuzhen:

"Auntie, could you do me a favor?"

Bai Yuzhen was taken aback. "What is it? Just tell me."
