"What have you done?" Almeru squinted at his sister. "Tell me!"
"What? I — I don’t understand..."
Seeing his sister’s pale appearance, Almeru looked at Matthew.
"Are you trying to sow discord between my sister and I?"
"Discord?" Matthew snorted. "Did you only agree to come here with her because of the benefits that this marriage would bring you?"
"You— "
"Please Almeru... let us stop acting like hypocrites. I know that the de Cene Family are greedy and I also know how you want to become on top of every other family. While the de Cene Family has pure blood, you are still weaker than most families. Isn’t that why you wanted to choose the bride and groom of your family members? It was because you wanted to find a strong partner, didn’t you?"
"You— "
"Of course, I am not trying to insult your family. I am merely stating facts."
"How dare you — " Almeru hissed. He came here with a smile. He was excited to finally seal the deal. He thought Matthew finally realized what would happen to him if he lost this opportunity. After all, Matthew was different from the other princes. Matthew had no backer.
His mother’s family died a long time ago. The King married his mother because of some promise from the older generation, but the King’s Luna was not Matthew’s mother. The current Luna was also the current queen.
And that was only right.
The current Luna is making the current King stronger than the previous King who haven’t found their mates. Anyway, Matthew was different from the other princes, not just because he lacked the backer, but also because the other princes grew up in the palace and were able to forge connections with the other Lycan Families.
Matthew grew up outside of the palace with a witch!
He was alone.
And the King didn’t even acknowledge him until they discovered that Matthew’s blood had higher purity than the rest of the princes.
Obviously, this news was enough to cause chaos inside the court. How could they let Matthew, someone who grew up outside of the palace, become the next King? It was madness!
But the laws... were laws. And they had to protect their kind.
So, everyone was forced to agree to make Matthew the next King.
The problem that followed was something that they never expected.
Matthew... ran away.
No. He didn’t just run away.
He asked his father’s permission to establish a company outside and find a way to help their raise produce stronger heirs.
The man refused to take mistresses or mark another woman!
It was absurd.
Stupid!
And everyone was mad when they heard the news of Matthew’s departure.
However, the King made a bet.
So, the King silently protected Matthew from the families who wanted to establish a connection. He also told everyone to give his son a chance to find a way. Of course, the King knew that there was no other way. The King and the previous Kings already did their best to find ways to create a purer bloodline. But they failed.
So... how could Matthew do it without any backers? Without any family that was supporting him from behind?
The King gave Matthew ten years to do it and the ten years... were almost up. Matthew was turning thirty-two soon. And once that happened, he would be forced to go back to the palace to claim his throne.
This is the reason the King allowed the de Cene family to come here and try to convince Matthew to come back.
But this?
This was completely unexpected!
Matthew smirked at him. Then he held his hand up and gestured one of his servants to approach them. The envelope in the servant’s hand was especially noticeable as it was large and... colorful. It wasn’t something that someone like Matthew would do.
Almost immediately, Almeru looked at the witch. Ava? Eva? He had forgotten the witch’s name. But that glint In the witch’s eyes was something he would never forget. He narrowed his eyes at the witch.
He had sent assassins to kill her.
Witches and other shifters.
But they failed.
All of them were silenced by Matthew’s men.
Matthew had the guts to kill the people from the de Cene family just for a slave! A mere witch who was thinking too highly of herself!
"That!" Aira’s gasped, caught his attention. He immediately opened the envelope that the servant placed in front of him. Then his gaze darkened.
"Where did you— "
"Brother, that is not real, not true at all!"
"Not true? This... this is you and Drigo!" the troublesome prince who sleeps with anyone that he likes! "Aira you — " he looked at the other photos and all of them were of Drigo and Aira in different places! Clearly, they have been sleeping with each other for a few months! If not years!
Almeru could feel his head throbbed. He massaged it as he threw the rest of the photos on the table.
"What is this, Matthew? Are you trying to blackmail us into backing down?"
"Blackmail you?" Matthew snorted he rested both of his elbows on the table. "I don’t blackmail people... Almeru. You should have known that by now. After all, we were friends... for so long."
"You— "
"Brother, that is not real! That is not me!"
"Shut your trap!" freēwēbnovel.com
"Brother!" Aira was already crying. Her face was red as she bit her lower lip. "Trust me... this is..."
"Papa told you that you are born to marry the future King and you... you fucking slept with his damn brother?"
"I— "
"Aira... you just embarrassed the whole de Cene family!"
"Brother!" Aira suddenly kneeled on the floor with a loud thud. She kissed her brother’s hand as she continued crying. "Please... don’t tell Papa about this. Please..."
Almeru let out a loud sigh. He was doing his best not to strangle his very own sister right now. He closed his eyes as he clenched his fist. "What do you want?" Almeru spoke. He slowly opened his eyes before turning towards Matthew.
"What do I want?" Matthew smiled.
"Yes, Matthew! What the hell do you want!?" If the King knew that Aira had been sleeping with another prince, he might think that they were trying to fool his sons! Yes. The King would think that Aira was trying to fool both Drigo and Matthew. That alone would be a huge... scandal!
What would happen if their father would know about this matter?
The old man would probably send his twin sister somewhere to repent. If worse became the worst, the old man might even kill her!
Aira would be lucky to get out of this unscratched.
"Nothing." Matthew answered after observing him.
"What?"
"I told you. I don’t do blackmail."
"Then why give us this? If you — " Almeru gulped his nonexistent saliva. "What did you do?"
"Hmmmm... let’s see..." Matthew leaned back. He looked relaxed. It was as if the man was just watching some comedy show at the bar. He sipped his wine, then smiled at him. "I thought it would be nice to... make you feel what Ava felt when you shared her file without her consent... what do you think?"
"You — " Almeru felt all the blood rush out of his face. His heart thundered in his chest.
As if on cue, his phone rang.
He opened it and, just as expected, it was from his father.
"You—" Almeru stared at the phone for a few seconds before looking at his sister. "You did this... just for a witch?" he asked Matthew.
When Matthew didn’t answer him, he continued. "You ruined years of friendship just... for a damn slave?"
"A slave?" Matthew snorted. "What slave?"
"You really are going to cut the connection that we have and ruin my sister’s life just because of her?" Almeru asked calmly. But despite his calm demeanor, his blood was already boiling inside. He had been holding on and trying to control his anger for a while now that he was already having difficulty breathing. He wanted to kill someone.
Almeru could feel his wolf howl. It might be weaker than Matthew, but... Almeru was confident he could kill the witch before Matthew could touch him.
Almeru was confident that Matthew would never touch him. This was because he was the heir of the de Cene Family. Touching him would mean war against a whole family of Lycans and werewolves.
"If you want to kill me..." Ava’s words sounded like a loud bell inside Almeru’s ears. "Do it now." Ava added. "Or just die in peace."
Almeru met Ava’s eyes.
’Did you really think I would forgive you, Lycan?’ Ava’s voice suddenly echoed inside his head. He frowned. Telepathy is considered normal for older witches. But a witch who’s not even in her thirties that could communicate through telepathy was... rare. ’You can hear me... right?’
Ava had a smile on her lips. The witch was insulting him! She was looking down on his family!
"You will regret this!" Almeru got up.
"Oh... please... "Ava said. "You should probably answer your... Papa’s call. It might be an emergency."
