"Dream walking is different from what most people portray." Shaman Gaas had a serious expression on his face. "You used it to kill someone... and you were not even aware of that. Were you?"
"I don’t... Not directly." Ava said. One was the girl from high school and the other was Romeo. Two people died because of the nightmares. "I didn’t directly kill them."
"You’re wrong." Shaman Gaas said. "You killed them by separating their souls from their bodies. You ... every time you access their dreams, you also open another dimension, another plane. And you must have left their soul there."
"You said Romeo tried to kill himself."
"It wasn’t Romeo." Shaman Gaas said. "It was the remnant of his soul. The small remnant that was left after you accidentally imprisoned his soul somewhere."
"But— "
"That’s what dream walkers do. The strong one could even do it while they are awake."
"Just like you," Ava said.
Shaman Gaas eyed Baba, who was sitting a few seats away from them. "Yes. Strong ones... just like me and you, Ava. You have the potential to do that too."
"Really?"
"Yes. Perhaps... after ten, twenty years of training."
"That—" That’s a little too long.
"Anyway. I don’t care if you have killed someone before. Those people can screw themselves. All I want is for you to properly use your abilities. Since you are now the student of this great Shaman, then I shall give you three things. This amulet is going to keep you safe from other dream walkers. They won’t be able to detect your presence or location. This blue pendant is... a charm that is going to hide your bond from anyone."
"Anyone?"
"Yes. Anyone including me. It would make any bonds or curses that you have in you invisible. The only downside is... if someone curses you, we won’t be able to detect it."
Ava nodded. "Thank you."
"This third gift is... something that you can use in deadly situations. It is going to transport you ten kilometers away from your current location. But... just like all amulets, they don’t work when you are surrounded by iron."
"Is there anything that could work even when there is iron?" Ava couldn’t help but ask. Iron is the weakness of magick— this is universal knowledge for all witches.
"None. But— " Shaman Gaas smiled. "The world works in mysterious ways. Until now, there are things we couldn’t understand about our very own world, about the cosmos. Fate is... mysterious. We don’t really know what’s going to happen in the near future, right?"
Ava nodded. Shaman Gaas never actually asked her about the mating or being a Lycan’s mate. In fact, he never mentioned anything after he and Baba got back from wherever they took a walk from. Instead, the old man declared that he was going to help her from now on. He was going to train her until she knew how to use her abilities.
Of course, this made Ava happy.
She already had two powerful teachers by her side! What more could she ask for?
"Hmmm?" Baba suddenly gasped, attracting everyone’s attention.
"Baba?" Matthew held the woman’s arm. "Hey... are you alright?"
"She’s seeing something," Shaman Gaas said. "It’s not a big deal. Let her finish her vision."
"Baba can see..."
"The future," Shaman Gaas nodded. "Pretty accurate too, but then again, the future always changes. There is no such a thing as constant except change, no?"
Ava nodded. Then she observed the old man’s expression. Baba’s face had become paler, her fists were clenched tightly, her lips pursed, her brows furrowed. Her eyes were closed, though.
Ava wondered what would she see if she try to pry it open.
She wished she had that ability, too.
But isn’t that scary?
What if... you could see someone’s death?
What if it was the death of your loved one?
Were you going to stop it?
The laws of nature about death are pretty clear. Intervening could only cause chaos.
But can someone really just... stay still, knowing that the person they are going to love will die soon?
Of course not! Ava would stop the death of the person that—
"You need to call your brother," Baba suddenly said. She looked at Ava with a grim expression on her face.
"Phil?" Hearing Baba’s words, Ava paled. She immediately opened her phone and called her brother.
"If I am right then... he and his son are in grave... grave danger."
"What?" Ava’s heart thundered against her chest. She tried calling Phil again but no one answered. What could it be? She bit her lower lip. She thought she heard Matthew instruct his people to contact his men who had been following Phil and his family.
"We should go..." Ava said.
"I will drive."
In just a few minutes, the four of them were already on their way toward Phil’s house.
"Tsk..." Ava clicked her tongue. Panicking would be useless in times like this. She thought of her enemies and the fact that she had been doing her best to stay away from her brother and nephew just to make it look like she didn’t care about them. She thought it had worked!
She wanted to make it look like they weren’t close. In the first place, they weren’t really siblings by blood. They just met at foster care and were adopted by the same woman.
It should have been believable!
Ava bit her lower lip.
"Calm down," Matthew said. "We couldn’t reach my people either. Baba, what did you see?"
"An explosion," Baba said. "Then I saw Ava crying ... and a photo of Ava and her brother on fire."
"Jesus... can you at least say it nicely?" Matthew said.
"That’s what I saw! I thought— "
"Alright, let’s calm down." Shaman Gaas said. "As I said... the future change all the time. We can’t really say that— "
"BOOOOMMMMM!"
A loud explosion interrupted their conversation. Almost immediately, the four of them vanished from inside the car.
The next thing that Ava knew, she was already at an ally just a few blocks away from where Phil and Gabi were living.
"We could have done that— "
"Shut up Gaas! This isn’t the time to talk about that!" Baba hissed. "We should get going... the explosion is just around this area— "
The four of them left the alley and soon arrived at... the explosion site.
Seeing the car on fire just a few meters away from Phil’s house, the first thing that Ava did was run towards the house to check on her brother. Phil’s car was on fire.
It exploded.
So what about her brother?
Her heart hammered against her chest as she abruptly opened the door.
"Phil?"
"Ava.... I can smell it... Something... get out of the — " Matthew didn’t finish his words as he dragged Ava out of the house.
Before Ava could process what just happened, a loud explosion happened. The explosion catapulted them out of the house. Nestled in Matthew’s arms, Ava’s eyes snapped shut.
A bomb inside the house?
She should have seen it! She should have sensed it!
*THUD!*
They landed just a few meters away from the house.
"PHIIILLLLL!"
"No... No...." Ava got out of Matthew’s arms and immediately tried to run toward the house. However, Matthew was quick enough to stop her. He held her as she called out Phil and Gabi’s names again.
She thought she heard a few other explosions before Ava lost her consciousness.
.....
When Ava woke up again, the first thing that she thought of was her brother. She jolted up, her heart was already drumming against her chest, and her head felt woozy, it was as if someone just hit her with something heavy.
Ava’s senses were on high alert.
"Baba? Where— "
"Sit down."
"What?"
"You are not allowed to stand up until I say so."
When Ava didn’t sit back down, Baba waved her hand and an invisible force pushed Ava down the bed.
"What are you— "
"Your brother is alive and well. He and his family are currently staying inside this mansion."
"That— "
"I had to forcefully make you faint earlier as you were losing control and..."
"And what? Did— did something happen?" Memories of when Ava heard that her mother died resurfaced in her head. At that time, she had lost herself and...
She gulped at the thought. Fear slowly crept inside her chest.
Did she hurt anyone this time?
Again?
"All of the lamps exploded. The explosion already attracted a lot of people’s attention. So... I... I used magick and hit your head. Which... made your mate so angry, he almost attacked me."
"Matthew?"
"So... I suppressed him too." Baba smiled. "Now... sit down and let’s discuss things, shall we?"
"This isn’t the most important thing right now. My brother— "
"Again, he and his family are safe. The baby is fine. Whoever did it didn’t actually want to harm them. It must have been done to warn someone." Baba said. "But Ava... I am more concerned about you losing control of your abilities. You are... too unstable. And you are so good at hiding it."
