Chapter 110: One Missing Baby

"In the end, you didn’t let them stay," Matthew sat across Ava. He stared at her beautiful face that was devoid of any expression. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking.

"You think I did the wrong thing?"

"No." Matthew shook his head. "I think... everything that you think or do is right."

She chuckled and rolled her eyes. "Sweet talker."

"I don’t know what you are talking about." He chuckled. Despite the blank expression on her face, he could feel the confusion coming from her. She was still hesitant. Probably because of what Baba told her.

Just like how Baba talked to Ava, she also talked to Matthew and told her about what she told Ava. Something was weird with her brother and if they stayed here, Baba would have had the time to find out what it was.

He expected Ava to give in, to allow her brother to stay.

But she did something unexpected, again.

However, Matthew also understood the reason why she did this.

Ava didn’t want to drag them into her personal matters. The thing between Ava and Matthew was already complicated as is. It would be more chaotic if she dragged her family with her.

"Do you want to be alone?" he asked.

"No." Ava smiled. She was staring at the fireplace. "I know I did the right thing."

Matthew nodded while his wolf purred. The wolf within him was proud of what Ava did. Matthew couldn’t help but snort inwardly.

Silence enveloped them as Matthew started staring at the fire too. Soon, the only thing that made a sound was the flicker of the fire. However, this peace was soon interrupted by someone.

It was Marko.

"Sir, we have an emergency..."

Matthew and Ava abruptly got up.

"What is it?" Matthew asked.

"The car... the car got into an accident..."

"What?" Ava paled. "What car?"

"Mr. Woods and his family— "

"Where are they?" Ava walked past Matthew. She stood in front of Marko. "Take me to them."

Seeing this, Matthew said nothing. He held Ava’s shoulder.

"Calm down..." he said. The marking made him feel her emotions. Though he couldn’t straight-up read her mind now, he could still sense whatever she was feeling. He then looked at Marko. "Tell us the details inside the car."

When they were inside the car, Marko immediately told them what happened.

"Two of our other cars were following them. A few minutes after they left the premises, another car started following them. We called Mr. Woods and told him to try and shake the car off or go to a safe hotel as we deal with the one following them. He refused and still drove towards the house. But just before they got there, another explosion happened. The tires of his car exploded and..."

"And what?"

"Shifters."

"What?" Matthew frowned.

"To be more specifics, weretigers and werebears attacked them..."

"And?" Ava asked. Her hand that was holding Matthew’s tightened.

"And they took the baby."

Ava gasped. Then she started shaking. "Gabi?"

"Two of our people were in critical condition. Mr. Woods is already in the hospital with his wife."

"How about Phil?"

"He sustained some injuries but his wife... " Marko cleared his throat. "His wife was the one holding the baby. She’s a weaker witch. She tried to fight them off but was easily defeated. Though, they didn’t kill her. Instead, they threw her against a large tree. She’s got seven broken ribs and is currently in the operating room."

Ava used her hand to cover her mouth. Her fingers trembled. Almost immediately a pang of strong guilt filled Ava like a strong tornado, ready to rip apart the logic that she had built around her decision. It was too strong, it almost felt suffocating.

Matthew reached out and pulled his woman towards his arms.

"How about Phil’s injury?" Matthew asked as he tightened his arms around Ava’s trembling body.

"A dislocated bone. Nothing major. He was in the military so he knows how to fight. But he lost consciousness at the beginning of the fight so... he sustain the least injury."

"How about our people? Are they awake now?"

"They should be..." Marko said. "Perhaps a few more hours."

Matthew nodded.

"And the people who did it?"

"Our people were tracing it. But... they are pretty familiar with the way we search our territory. It seems that whoever did it. Knows us."

"De Cene," Matthew uttered in a low dangerous tone. He knows that the de Cene family would do something. But he never expected them to actually target Ava’s family! An innocent family!

He gritted his teeth.

"Call the patriarch of the de Cene Family. Tell them to return the baby or I am going to visit them."

"With all due respect sir, we cannot just make demands. The de Cene is a very well-known Lycan family. If we go against them..."

Matthew pursed his lips.

The politics inside the Lycan society were dirtier and more dangerous than the politics in the outside world. This is why he hated it. He hated them.

He always said that he didn’t want to be king. But now, he was trying to impose on the family that serves the current king.

One mistake and a war between the de Cene family and Matthew could happen. And the de Cene could use this opportunity to try and drag him back to that place.

He snorted.

"Then don’t call them," Matthew said.

"Hmmm?"

"Tell me the current location of the twins. Ban them from leaving this country."

"But sire..."

"Europe is their turf... The US is mine. Call Baba. Tell her to coordinate with Shaman Gaas. Tell them Ava is in danger. That should be enough to make those old folks do their job."

"How about you... sir?"

"I will... get the baby," Matthew said.

"Then..." Ava uttered. "I will come with you."

"You can’t... the de Cene..." seeing the determination in Ava’s eyes, Matthew smiled. "You are not going to change your mind... "

"Right."

"Alright then... Let’s get Gabi back."
