Chapter 111: A Trap

"Why are you here?" Phil yelled when he spotted Ava.

In response, Ava flinched. She stopped walking and observed her brother from afar. Phil had a cast on his arm, blood still visible on his face. He was standing just outside of the operating room where Marylis was at.

"Get the hell away from here!" Phil said.

"Broody..."

"Marylis begged you, didn’t she?" Phil approached her. Despite his clear difficulty in walking, he walked towards Ava, anger apparent on his face. "Marylis begged you! She asked you to let us stay! She must have seen it. She must have known that this would happen! But what the hell did you do, V?"

"Phil..."

"Don’t you fucking tell me to calm down!"

Ava gulped. She knew this would happen. She knew her brother would lash out at her. He would hate her and maybe hate her forever.

But she needed to come here.

She needed to show herself.

She needed him to be angry at her.

Does that even made sense?

Watching her brother’s hateful glare made her heart hurt. It felt like someone stabbed a knife into her heart and slowly twisted it. But she didn’t show anything on her face. Instead, her gaze turned colder.

She already saw her brother alive and well.

And that was enough.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Phil asked when Ava turned away from him. "You can’t take it, right? The guilt? V, someone just took my son! But this... this wouldn’t have happened if you just let us stay!"

"No, it wouldn’t have happened," Ava said, her voice almost like a whisper. Gabi won’t get kidnapped if she had agreed to let them stay. However, the Lycans and the covens would definitely come after them first if they knew that Matthew and Ava were... mates. And they would kill them.

To teach Ava a lesson, those people would kill the people that she loved.

She couldn’t take that.

"I will find Gabi," she said. "Then you and your family should leave this place."

"What?" Phil grabbed her shoulder. Almost immediately, they heard Matthew growl.

"Let her go."

"Stay out of this, punk!"

"I said..."Matthew grabbed Phil’s hand just as he was about to squeeze it, Ava turned around.

"Enough..." she said. She met Phil’s raging eyes and said," I will find Gabi but you have to promise me one thing."

"Promise you?" Phil snorted.

"Leave this place, Phil. It will only get more dangerous from now on," she said.

In response, Phil squinted at her. "You are hiding something from me."

"I am."

"Does this have to do with that organization you were working for?"

Ava opened her lips but no words came out of her mouth.

"Oh, you think I didn’t know? What was his name? The old man... was it Samuel?"

"You— "

"You think you were the only one he tried to recruit?"

"Phil please lessen to me. After this, you need to leave Alaska. No need to worry about money I will— "

"Shut up V," Phil said. "After you kicked our family out, I don’t think you have the right to tell me what to do anymore."

"Phil..."

"Look at you," Phil got closer and gave her a smirk that she haven’t seen from him before. "Acting like an adult. Acting like you are the one keeping secrets."

"Phil..."

"Get lost V. I don’t want to see you and your friends again."

"They are there to protect you."

"Protect me? From whom?" Phil narrowed his eyes at Matthew. "From what?"

Ava gulped and Phil continued, "Right... you can’t tell me. You just put my family in danger and you can’t even tell me about it, can you?"

Ava’s throat felt dry. She badly wanted to tell him everything. But knowing nothing is better than being killed.

"I will get Gabi back," Ava said. "Then you leave the US."

"How— "

"I was not asking for your permission Phil," Ava said. "I was giving you an order. Now, if you want to keep your family safe then you will follow my order. Of course, if you really want them to suffer then feel free to stay."

With that, Ava walked away from her only brother.

......

This was going to be the first time that they were going to work together.

Ava nervously bit her lower lip. She wasn’t nervous about the upcoming fight. She was more nervous about losing herself in anger and hurting the man standing next to her.

Matthew.

He was wearing an item of all-black clothing, and half of his face was covered. Though, she didn’t get why he was covering his face when everyone could tell it was him just by his golden orbs and built.

She sighed and looked at the large building in front of them. This building was just next to an airbase— a secret airbase that the Lycans owned.

Matthew already informed her how influentials the Lycans are. But to actually have a secret airbase in Alaska and most states in the world? Surely, the majority of the people hadn’t heard of that.

"I can feel them," Ava said. "Shifters..."

"How about Almeru?" Matthew asked.

"He is... in pain," Ava said. It was nighttime. The curse should be in effect. "That is the reason why the plane isn’t moving yet. Everyone seems to be panicking because of his screams." Ava could feel anguish inside the building. It felt like a dark cloud actually covered the whole place. "Something... is dark in that building," Ava said. "It feels like... the shifters who worked with Romeo."

"Hybrids?" Matthew frowned.

"I can’t say."

"Then can you identify it if we are nearer?" he asked.

"Probably. But your senses are definitely more acute than mine."

"Shifters and Hybrids almost have the same smells. One can only smell them if they bleed."

Ava nodded. That was new.

She looked towards the building again.

"This might be a trap, you know." Why would the de Cene family still keep the baby in this place knowing that Ava could easily track them using her magick?

Obviously, they wanted her to know the location of the baby.

"I know."

"And you still decided to come," Ava said.

"Why not?"

She couldn’t answer that.

She heard Matthew chuckle.

"I will come with you even if you go to hell, Ava. Always remember that."
