Chapter 135: Rich People

"What is this?" Ava asked, confused as she accepted the bouquet of flowers from Matthew. "What — Did I miss anything?" It was nearly one in the morning. And Matthew just arrived from his office.

"I just thought you would like it." He leaned down and kissed her cheek.

"I like it. Thank you very much. I just..." Ava lowered the volume of the news that she was watching. "It’s a surprise..." She got up and placed the bouquet on the bed. She didn’t necessarily like flowers but she didn’t hate them either.

But why was he giving her flowers?

Did he... do something wrong?

Did he... kiss another woman?

What was with this sudden surprise?

"Thanks, I like it." She smiled. "Did you... uh... had dinner?"

"I ate a couple of take outs. You wanna go to the kitchen with me? I can heat some leftovers and— "

"No." Ava shook her head. Did he want to heat some leftovers? This house had over five servants! Why would he personally heat leftovers?

"You look... sick. Are you alright?"

"No. I mean yes. I am alright."

"Are you sure?" he placed his palm on her forehead. She wanted to duck, but she actually had no reason to avoid his touch.

"Of course."

"So, why give me flowers?" Unable to stop herself, Ava asked.

"Just because I want to."

"Did you — " She cleared her throat. She didn’t want to sound like a jealous woman! "Did you do something wrong?"

"What?" he started unbuttoning his shirt as he chuckled.

"I mean... usually men act sweet because they did something wrong. Like... cheat."

Matthew turned towards her with an unreadable expression on his face.

Seeing this, she immediately said. "I mean... I didn’t mean to say that. I was just using a theory from an article that I read in the past. About men and women in relationships. So I was just curious, and I thought the change was sudden, especially since we are in the middle of something troublesome. It was weird. I got really curious and I know I should have kept that to myself, but I know I won’t be able to sleep tonight if I do that. And maybe I should just stop talking because I feel like I am babbling nonsense... ugh why are you laughing?"

"You are talking too fast. I could barely understand what you just said."

"Oh..." Ava’s face reddened. Why the hell was she acting like a teenager? "Uh... Sorry about that. Please ignore my question."

She was about to walk out of the room when Matthew hugged her from behind. She stiffened. Not because of the contact, but because he was... not wearing his shirt.

His skin was hot and bare against hers.

And yes, it was the wrong time to think about that, given the current embarrassing circumstances she was in.

"I didn’t mean to confuse you," he whispered. "I have been busy lately." His arms tightened around her as he bent forward, his nose nuzzling her neck, inhaling her scent.

"Sorry. It was... the stress," Ava said. She was a damn adult woman! How could she act like this in front of him? So embarrassing!

"I never thought you had a cute side in you," Matthew said. It looked like the man wasn’t planning on letting her go anytime soon.

"I am always cute."

"Not when you are angry."

"You said I look beautiful when I’m angry!"

"You are beautiful when you’re angry. Beautiful isn’t cute."

"Such a sweet talker."

"Only to you."

"Oh, shut up," Ava uttered. She wondered how many women had succumbed to his charms. But before her brain could spiral into something she wouldn’t like, she decided to think about the present. The past was past. So what if he had slept with other women before?

"Are you hungry?" she asked.

"Always."

She slightly elbowed him. "I’m not talking about that."

He chuckled. "I know."

"Then?"

"I just said I’m always hungry."

"You— "

"Lycans have — a very good appetite."

"I can see that," she rolled her eyes and removed his tangled arms around her. "Should we eat something?"

She watched him curiously.

Matthew looked beautiful under the yellowish lighting inside the room. The man looked like a Greek god for crying out loud.

Now that she thought about it...

Ava cleared her throat.

She was always hungry, too.

"Let’s go to the kitchen. I’ll whip something up for you." She pulled him out of their room before she could think of pushing him to the bed.

The man had been working hard to fix the problems she created. The least that she could do was cook something for him.

"You know... your house is too big," Ava complained as they walked down the stairs. They were holding each other’s hands and Ava didn’t even seem to notice it. "I don’t like to walk down the stairs in the middle of the night just to have my midnight snack."

"Then we can stay in a room with a complete kitchen and dining—"

"That’s not the point." Ava rolled her eyes. Rich people and their money.

"We can’t leave this place. This is the most secure place in this State."

"I know. But if we think about it... the people training below this house..." Ava didn’t continue her words. "It’s a double-edge sword." After what she heard from Jude, Ava was almost sure that the man that she fought and Matthew’s men were spies. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"I know."

"And you still let them stay?"

"It’s not my call."

"You mean..."

"My father. It was his way of making sure that I stay safe."

"So, he sent them here?"

"Most of them. Some were my friends. They followed me here."

"That’s — How come rich people’s lives are so complicated?"

Her words somehow made Matthew laugh.

"I’m serious. I think a simple life in a smaller house where walking from your room to the dining area doesn’t take you five minutes is better."

"I agree."

"Oh?"

"I used to live in a small house with Baba."

"Really?"

"Well... maybe not your typical small house, but it was considerably smaller than this."

"Oh..."

"If you really want a smaller house, I can build a small manor at the back of this mansion. And we can stay there."

Ava blinked. Right. Rich people and their money.
