Jude scowled.
"Number one, Ava is stronger than me. If anything, she’s the one who needs to protect me. Number two, I would never fall for someone who could kill me in a blink of an eye."
Matthew only smirked in response.
The man actually had the audacity to look proud.
Jude’s face turned uglier.
"I am glad that you understand that."
"Understand what?" Jude asked.
"That only strong men can handle a woman like her." Matthew finished his scotch. "Only men like me can do that."
"You—"
"I wouldn’t curse if I were you, Caro. Especially since we are alone. Ava won’t be able to protect you from me."
Jude almost erupted in anger. His blood was boiling.
Matthew was nothing but a two-faced son of a bitch whose arrogant ass loved to show his superiority every now and then. Next to Ava, the man looked docile and fucking domesticated. But once Ava was gone, he would switch into a deplorable creature!
Sadly, Jude couldn’t do a thing to fight him!
He could only glare at him until Ava came back.
Then he watched them vanish in front of him.
"These people are treating my place like their own living room!" he muttered. He eyed the empty glass of vodka. Then he sighed.
"What did I get myself into?" he couldn’t help but ask himself.
.....
The next day
Jude hadn’t gotten an iota of sleep.
He walked outside of his room, a little pissed and definitely hungry.
"Good Morning Mr. Caro, here is your coffee for the day," a smiling Ivy made him flinch.
"What the—" he was about to berate her when he saw the donut in Ivy’s other hand.
"How about you break that fast for some... donuts?" Ivy handed him the coffee. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
"You are— "
"The mansion’s chef makes the best donuts, you know."
The woman was definitely Ava.
Ivy would never offer him something to eat knowing that he wouldn’t eat until eleven.
Jude started massaging his temples as he accepted the coffee. He started walking towards the elevator that would lead him to his car.
"You have a flight to Texas in two hours. This is for a council meeting with the local coven. In thirty minutes, you are scheduled to call The Church of Heavenly Shadows in New York for some complaints about... missing people. They have been trying to alert Trillium about it and now, local news picked it up. They are starting to attract attention."
"How did you become so good at this?" Jude asked just as the elevator door closes.
"I cheated."
"You mean..."
"I just look into her head."
"You— "
"You don’t have to worry. I didn’t do it on my own. I had no control over magick. I don’t do complicated processes. I had a little help from experts."
Jude wanted to ask her what experts she was talking about but chose not to.
"You will follow me to Texas and... we are not killing anyone."
Ava nodded.
Soon, the two of them were already in the car, on the way to the office— Samuel’s previous office.
Walking inside, Ava immediately noticed the big changes. From the flooring to the lighting. Even the tint of the windows changed.
On the outside, this building was for an oil company based in the Middle East. But in reality, this was one of the biggest Trillium Bases in North America that was located on the border of Alaska and Canada.
"Jerome, it’s so nice to see you," Jude said when the call to New York connected. He eyed Ava who was languidly sitting just a few feet away from his desk. "Yes. I already sent some people to take care of it. Rest assured, Trillium will do everything in our power to solve the issue."
Luckily, the call didn’t have any video so, the High Priest of the Coven in New York couldn’t see him glaring at Ava.
"A witch hunter?" Jude frowned. "What makes you say that? Yes. Two of the dead people are witches but witches die all the time."
"Proof? Now, let’s take it easy. I don’t want you to spread anything about this to your coven or other covens. We want to avoid panic. I will send an officer to take care of the case."Jude said. "An officer is perfectly capable of doing that. Of course. They can easily kill witches and Lycans. They are trained to deal with... situations like that."
"Yes. Of course. You are very welcome. Let’s have dinner the next time I visit New York. Right... send my regards to Aurora and the Kids. Absolutely. Alright. Bye now."
Jude ended the call.
"You know, a secretary isn’t supposed to do this at work," Jude said.
"What do you mean?" Ava asked. She looked at him with such innocence it immediately worsened his already bad day.
"Eavesdrop?"
"Oh. That was part of my investigation."
"Matthew was right," Jude decided to turn his attention towards the paper that needed his signature. "I can’t win this time." He thought he heard her snicker but he did everything he could to ignore it.
He wasn’t going to win when it comes to talking to someone like Ava. And stressing over this matter would probably kill him first.
"So... a witch hunter. That’s not good news, is it?’ Ava uttered. The damn woman was checking her nails! Her fucking nails!
"You were not supposed to hear that."
"Well. I did and I am curious about it."
"Two witches are dead. One was rxped, the other wasn’t. He just assumed they were killed by the same people."
"How did you know they aren’t killed by a witch hunter?" Ava asked.
"Witch hunters... are extinct V. The other covens made sure of that decades ago. It would be close to impossible to find one in a city like New York."
"What if it’s really a witch hunter?"
"We find it and then we kill it. That’s protocol." Witch hunters are humans who made a deal with demons. And they use their strength to kill witches. However, the witches used world war two to purge them. It would be impossible to find one these days.
Or so... he thought.
