Texas
Ava squinted.
She thought back to her time in Egypt, as soon as she had stepped down from the chopper that they had rode to Texas.
The heat here was excruciating, reminding her of that place. Especially for someone who had gotten used to the weather in Alaska. Spring had just begun in Alaska but it already looked like summer here.
"Mr. Caro, please follow me," a woman as tall as Ava welcomed them. "Please call me Beatrice, I will be at your service while you are here."
"Thank you," Jude answered coolly while Ava followed closely behind him.
"Mr. Hudson and the council are waiting inside." The woman led them towards a shed. Of course, Ava knew that this is only an illusion. Inside this shed should be a mansion where the Council of the Witches in Texas was currently located.
The moment she walked inside the shed, the scenery around her immediately changed. An aisle appeared. Next to it were flowers blooming and swaying happily in the invisible air.
Ava didn’t have the time to look around as Jude was already walking towards another door.
After they got it, Ava immediately saw the large gates of the mansion. Since Jude had been here before, he was able to tell her that the environment inside was different from the flowers earlier.
A flash of lightning illuminated the place. She took in the scenery of the mansion as well as the dead trees. Then there was darkness.
Aside from the lamp posts that lit up the pathway that was made of cobblestones, there was a large statue of what looked like a dog next to the gates.
It didn’t take too long for them to have access to the real mansion.
Just as they walked inside, the rain started pouring.
Ava lifted an eyebrow but managed to control her expression. They were currently inside a plane, a small plane that was created to hide the witches during the witch hunt.
These are pretty popular in the US. And many witches survived the persecution because of these.
"Mr. Caro," a man that looked like he was in his forties greeted them. It was none other than Rome Hudson, the High Priest of a well-known coven here in Alaska. He smiled at Jude before the two shook their hands. "I actually did not expect that you would personally come here today."
Jude smiled. "I had to. This is a very important matter."
"I understand. Please follow me. We are all waiting for you. Ah... your secretary can— "
"She stays with me." Jude interrupted the man.
"Pardon me?"
"You heard me."
"With all due respect sir, the things that we are going to talk about are... sensitive."
"We can trust her. I want her to join the meeting next time."
"Ah— "Rome looked at Ava from head to toe. Then he nodded in appreciation. "I understand."
The man must have thought that Jude was going to promote her or something. Either way, Ava totally appreciated Jude’s acting. He should become an actor or something.
After a few seconds, they arrived in front of a large mahogany door. Rome opened it without lifting a finger.
They walked in and saw the large circular wooden table that took up the centre of the room.
Twelve seats. Ten were occupied.
Some of them looked like they were still in their thirties while the others looked like they were about to die anytime soon. Ava knew that these people weren’t using their real faces. Witches and their lies, she thought inwardly.
Since there was no seat for Ava, she chose to stand behind Jude and even took her tablet and pen to take some... notes.
"Mr. Caro, we are concerned that the number of shifters from Mexico is increasing. Please refer to the files on the folder for the number of humans that had been targeted in the past few days."
Ava didn’t expect these people to immediately start doing business— boring business. The discussion could be summed up with a few words. The witches wanted to kick out Mexican shifters. They wanted to send them back to where they really belonged.
They wanted reinforcements. They wanted help.
In the end, Jude relented and told them that he would talk to the head of the shifters in Mexico about this matter. After about two hours of talking back and forth, the meeting finally ended.
However, Jude still had matters to attend to.
Jude and Ava followed Rome towards a private office inside the large mansion. Unlike the interior of the rest of the mansion, this one actually looked modern. The walls were adorned with glass windows and the floor was carpeted with a beautiful persian rug. Witches and their over the top renovations, Ava scoffed inwardly.
If only her control was enough for her to paint a wall. Sadly, she was only good at destroying them.
"I have heard about the new demands," Rome sat on the chair behind his table. He gestured for them to sit across from him.
After making himself comfortable, Jude smiled. "And?"
"I don’t think I can do it without attracting the attention of the other covens."
"So, you can’t give us the humans?"
Rome frowned. "You don’t understand. These people might be... illegal border crosses but a hundred of them is just too much."
Ava’s pursed her lips.
"They want more of them, Rome. We are reaching the final stages of the experiments."
"But I can’t do it without— "
"I heard you the first time," Jude sighed. "If you can’t get enough humans who are trying to cross the borders, then you should try the prison. I am sure you have connections, right?"
"You mean..."
"Death penalty. Isn’t that allowed in Texas?"
"You wanted me to take them instead?"
"Of course," Jude smirked. "They would be on death row for a reason. Humans don’t need them. We take them and use them for the good of Trillium and the witch’s community. It’s a win-win for everyone."
"I will check if I can still access connections but don’t you think this is a bit overboard? I mean... we aren’t supposed to involve ourselves in the things that concern humans."
"If humans were to discover our kinds, do you think they would hesitate to kidnap one of ours and experiment on them?"
Rome pursed his lips in response. Then he shook his head.
"You should do it for the sake of your children." Jude nodded then he looked at Ava. "Right... Ivy?" freewebnøvel.coɱ
